Depending on the nature of your business, you may need to obtain the requisite licenses, consents, permits, registrations and/or authorisations from the relevant governmental, statutory, or regulatory bodies, authorities or agencies before you are permitted to run your business.

[size=1em]If you are going to run your business from a business premise, you will need to apply for a business premise license, which is otherwise also known as trade license.
[size=1.2em]These are examples of how a business premise license should look like.
Types of Business Premise License
[size=1em]There are different types of business premise license in Malaysia. The business premise license that your business requires will depend on the nature of your business.
For certain types of business activities that are not as straightforward, the relevant town council will assess and determine whether a business falls under the relevant license category where an application has been made.
Certain businesses are also required to obtain supporting documents from the appropriate ministry and/or other relevant governmental body before it is permitted to make an application for the business premise license.

[size=1em]The application for the business premise license is to be made to the relevant town council where your premises is located.
To determine which town council has an authority over your premises, you are advised to provide us with a copy of an Assessment Receipt (Cukai Taksiran/Pintu) issued by the town council in respect of your premises.
While your address may indicate that your premises is located in Kuala Lumpur, the town council regulating your premises may not necessary be Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), but rather, it could be other local authority.
[size=1.2em]Fees Payable to Local Authority [size=1em]The fees payable to the local authority for the business premise license will also depend on the nature of your business, and for certain businesses, it will also be subject to the floor area of the premises.
[size=1.2em]License Period [size=1em]Typically, a business license granted by the local authority is valid for a period of one (1) year from the date of application approval/ renewal approval. Such license can be renewed every year by just paying the prescribed renewal fee.
Signage Advertisement License

[size=1em]If you intend to display a signboard on your premises, you must obtain a signboard license before displaying or exhibiting any signboard.
We normally encourage our clients to apply for business premise and signage advertisement license together to save costs. It is also to be noted that certain town councils have made it mandatory to apply for both business and signage advertisement license at the same time.
Requirement of A Signboard
[size=1em]The nature of your business must be clearly set out in Malay Language (Bahasa Malaysia) on the signboard, together with your company name and business license number.
Further, for the town council to approve the placement of the signboard on your premises, you must also ensure that the signboard will not be mounted over any glass structure, window, façade or obstruct any view or walkway.
Any visuals related to alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, indecent photographs are also prohibited to be displayed on the signboard.
[size=1.2em]The following is an example of how a signboard should look like.
[size=1.2em]Additional Process and Duration [size=1em]The Malay Language (Bahasa Malaysia) to be displayed on the signboard must be approved by the Institute of Language and Literature (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka). It typically takes about one (1) to three (3) days to obtain the approval from the Institute.
[size=1.2em]License Period [size=1em]Typically, a signboard license granted by the local authority is valid for a period of one (1) year from the date of application approval/ renewal approval. Such license can be renewed every year by just paying the prescribed renewal fee.

[size=1em]Different town councils have different requirements on the documents to be submitted for application of Business Premise & Signage Advertisement License. We set out below some of the documents generally required to apply for Business Premise & Signage Advertisement License in Malaysia.
[size=1em]1. A complete set of SSM documents
[size=1em]The SSM documents which we will require from you will depend on type of your business entity. Where required by the relevant town council, we will also need you provide us with a complete set of SSM documents certified as true copy by your company secretary.
[size=1em]2. Sale and Purchase Agreement/ Tenancy Agreement
[size=1em]You will need to provide us with either: [size=1em]a. a copy of the sale and purchase agreement between your business entity (as buyer of the premises) and the seller; or [size=1em]b. a copy of the tenancy agreement between your business entity (as tenant) and the landlord.
[size=1em]3. A copy of the applicant’s identity card and/or passport photo
[size=1em]4. A copy of your office layout plan
[size=1em]5. Photographs of the business premises
LICENSE APPLICATION SERVICE
Business Premise License, Signboard License Permit, Renovation Building Plan Approval, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Approval, Trademark Registration Service & etc...
[size=1em]6. Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC)/ Certificate of Fitness (CF)
CCC/ CF is a certificate that verifies that a building is safe and fit for occupation and has been constructed in accordance with the provisions under the laws. If your premises is tenanted, a copy of the CCC can be obtained from your landlord.
7. Quit Rent (Cukai Tanah) and Assessment (Cukai Taksiran/ Pintu) Receipts
If your premises is tenanted, a copy of the Quit Rent and Assessment Receipt can be obtained from your landlord.
8. Copy of the Fire Department’s support letter/ Bomba Certificate
For certain types of premises, the town council may require Fire Department’s supporting letter or Fire Certificates to be submitted during an application for business premises license.
