Let’s follow Sabah-style racial unity for Malaysia, says Waytha
KOTA KINABALU: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy today praised Sabahans for their spirit of unity, saying it was something he would like to emulate in drawing up policies in the peninsula. Waytha said he was impressed when he learnt that there were families whose members were made up of different religions. “Yet, they can eat and drink together without any problem. I think this is an example that needs to be emulated by other Malaysians. “I intend to introduce this Sabah culture to the peninsula and we will share Sabah’s experience there as this is the kind of unity that we all should have,” he said after a tour of different houses of worship in Kota Kinabalu here, ending with a visit to Masjid Nurul Hikmah in Bukit Padang.
Waytha said the federal government would introduce a new action plan to strengthen unity among the multiracial and multireligious groups in the country. He said the action plan would be ready by December or early January next year. “Once it is in place, we will carry out programmes nationwide which we hope will go a long way towards enhancing unity among the people in the country,” he said. Waytha said the plan would be more comprehensive and inclusive, compared with the programmes carried out by the previous government, adding that it would take into account past failures. “We have to admit that some of the plans carried out in the past have failed to unite the people. “So bearing this in mind, we want to make sure that the current plan will be inclusive and consider the past failures and rectify them,” he said.
