PAP MP Lim Biow Chuan has explained that the misspelt “Marry Christmas” banner in his constituency has already been removed.
In fact, there were nine of such banners put up around the constituency and a resident had taken a photo of one and posted it online.
Responding to media queires, MP Lim said that they often put up festive banners during this time of year and it was the grassroots which had organised the printing of the banners.
Contractors are then engaged to print the banners and put them up.
Mr Lim said that the banners were put up on Wednesday and taken down by Thursday. He also said that the error had been on the part of the contractors and the grassroots had not proof-read the complete banners.



"I thought it was quite careless, but not a serious error, rather, a typographical error on the part of the contractor. The contractor made a mistake and the constituency office did not proofread (the banners)."
Mr Lim added: "I think we all can look at it and say that mistakes happen. None of us are perfect. I told my constituency office to be more careful next time. I believe we ought to promote graciousness and allow people to learn from their mistakes.”
He also indicated that they would not refrain from hiring the same contractors again in future just because of this incident.


马国马来人不会犯上的错误

Just recently a poorly translated Lau Pa Sat tourist road sign was highlighted by netizens and images of the bad Tamil translation went viral online.

Now, another government agency has sent out poorly translated fliers. The National Environment Agency had distributed fliers which an Indian student had criticised as making “no sense whatsoever”.

J.S. Sasikumar, who is a member of the Tamil Language Society at NUS had said that the flier seems to have simply been put through an online translator before being printed multiple times and distributed.

The student emailed Vivian Balakrishnan about the issue and the Minister then instructed NEA to quickly rectify the issue.

Dr Balakrishnan, the Minister for Environment and Water Resources, the Ministry overseeing NEA, replied to the student and said that he agreed that they needed more accurate and proper translations.​

The student had also highlighted a second Tamil letter sent out by NTUC U Live which is supposed to engage elderly people.

The poor translations are also currently under investigation by the relevant organisations that sent them out.

It seems that even Government Stat Boards such as NEA and the Singapore Tourism Board as well as GLCs like NTUC are unable to ensure that they get someone native in Tamil to read over their communications.

Tamil is one of the four national languages in Singapore but it seems that government workers simply don’t care about getting it right.
