PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya’s book banning practice has come under attack from a politician and a scholar who both say it is an insult to the intelligence of Malaysians, especially those who speak Malay. Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari said the ban on the Malay translation of Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species “made absolutely no sense” and Universiti Malaya academic Azmi Sharom accused the government of trying to curtail the intellectual development of Malays.
In his response to Zairil’s question, Zahid said the translation endangered public harmony but the original was acceptable because there had been “no complaints regarding the existence of any infringements” on Islamic beliefs. “The translated book depicts a view of the origin and creation of species that goes against Islamic teachings and is in contravention of the Islamic Materials Censorship Guidelines as well as the beliefs of the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah,” he added. In his statement today, Zairil asked: “How can the same book be considered a public danger and against Islamic teachings in one language but perfectly acceptable in another?
