Born 1964 in Malaysia. He graduated from the Architectural Association London in 1987, and he worked for various architectural offices in London before establishing his own practice, Studio 8 Architects (
www.cjlim-studio8.com) in 1994. His architecture is consistently exploring in parallel buildings, landscape and urban design possibilities through narratives, culture + ethnicity and technological inventiveness.
In 2004, he was selected to represent the UK in the Venice Architecture Biennale 04 and was chosen as one of the New British Talents in Architecture by the Guardian and the Independent newspapers. He is also listed in Debrett's People of Today and the International Who's Who for his architecture + academic contributions.
His academic work started in 1989 and had since taught at the Architectural Association London, University of North London and University of East London. Currently, he is the Director Bartlett Architecture Research Lab (1999- present), Director BSc Architecture Course (2001- present) + Diploma Unit Master (1993- present) at the Bartlett University College London. The Royal Institute of British Architects President's Medals in Education have consistently been awarded to his students: Bronze Medal runner-ups [1992, 1995, 1996] + winner [1997, 1998]; + Silver Medal winners [1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999] + runner-ups [1996, 1997]. In 1997, he was the first recipient of the RIBA Award for Academic Contribution in Architectural Education, + in 1998, 1999.
He is a regular international Visiting Critic, RIBA External Examiner + Visiting Professor at Mackintosh School of Architecture Glasgow (2001 - present), Chiba Institute of Technology Japan (2004), School of Architecture Aarhus Denmark (2002), Technological University Lund Sweden (2001 + 2003), Stadelschule Frankfurt Germany (1997 + 2000), Curtin University Perth Australia (1996).
Winner of numerous international competitions which include GlassHouse Japan [2001], Ideal Home Concept House UK [1999], UCL Museum UK [1996], Bridge of the Future Japan [1987], Housing: a Demonstration Project UK [1987]. His drawings and models have won much acclaim within academic and public circles; and have form part of the permanent architectural collection of the Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain du Centre [FRAC] France.
