Team AirAsia - Race One Preview

Thursday 9th February 2011

Following the successful pre-season testing in Abu Dhabi the new season of the GP2 Asia Series opens on 10th February at Yas Marina Circuit. New entrant Team AirAsia will make its racing debut with drivers Luiz Razia (Brazil) and Davide Valsecchi (Italy) this week in the new third generation GP2 car. Joining the existing field of twelve teams, Team AirAsia will compete in all three rounds of the season in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix support race in March.

Looking forward to the season ahead is Phill Spencer, Team Manager, drivers Luiz Razia and Davide Valsecchi and Team Principal Riad Asmat.

Phill Spencer:  “We are all confident going into our first race week, although a little nervous! After our strong performance in testing the pressure is on but that is a great motivating factor. We have been practicing pit stops and race starts, which both play a critical role in maximising track performance and the whole team is ready for the challenges ahead. Now we need to try and repeat our practice performance in qualifying and the races this weekend. Let’s see what happens!”

Luiz Razia: “We have had four good days of testing and I think we have found a good set up for the new car, so I am feeling really positive about qualifying tomorrow. Competition is very tight so it will be important to qualify in a good position – all we do now is go out there tomorrow and give it our best shot.”

Davide Valsecchi: “After testing here last week I feel we are in a strong position and our aim is to qualify tomorrow in the top five. It’s a new team and a new car, but I feel confident that we have what it takes to get on the podium this weekend.  I am really looking forward to the opportunity.”

Riad Asmat: “We go into our first race as Team AirAsia having already exceeded expectations for a new team. Everyone has gelled together perfectly and the performances in practice have shown we are ready to fight right at the top of the grid. I have been so impressed already with the dedication and passion everyone in the team has to get the job done, and I hope their hard work and energy is rewarded this weekend, and throughout the season.”

Paul Ricard, France - 18th November 2010
               
                Team AirAsia successfully completed its maiden GP2 shakedown today at Paul Ricard, with driver Johnny Cecotto running for 30 laps with a best time of 1.15.627. The team now leaves the French circuit to prepare for next year feeling very optimistic about the season ahead.
               
                Riad Asmat, Team AirAsia Team Principal: “It is a very proud day for everyone associated with Team AirAsia to see our new car complete 30 laps and for the whole day to have run so smoothly. I would like to thank Johnny for doing a very professional job today and thank everyone in the team for all their hard work in helping us reach this point today, as well as thanking Dallara, Renault, and Pirelli for helping us make our GP2 dream come true. This is the start of another exciting chapter for Malaysian, UK and global motorsport and we hope to inspire another generation of talent around the world to join us as we set out to achieve our goals in the 2011 GP2 season.”
               
                Phill Spencer, Team AirAsia Team Manager: “Today was a successful shakedown for us. Obviously we had one or two of the normal teething problems but the team worked well to rectify that and minimise lost track time. We ran through a number of tests, making the most of the limited number of spares that we have at the moment and have generated some useful data from all the running we did, especially on high fuel. All in all we are very happy with today’s progress.”
               
                Humphrey Corbett, Team AirAsia Chief Engineer: “For me it was a very good session today. The shakedown is supposed to be exactly that - a chance to shake down the car and make sure everything runs properly and that is what we have achieved today. I am also pleased with how we looked out there today. We are still a team that has had very limited time to put itself together and we presented ourselves very professionally indeed. I also want to thank Johnny for his work today. He did everything that was required of him and made no mistakes which is just what we needed today.”

    The GP2 will also be in the same base as Team Lotus and Team Air Asia will be embedded inside the base and the two teams will share resources. Gascoyne also stated that they planned to use the Team Air Asia drivers as Lotus' test and reserve drivers. Gascoyne further mentioned that the fact that GP2 were using Pirelli tyres also helped as they would be able to get technical data and add it onto the Formula One car

GP2 Asia Test 2nd – 3rd February

Wednesday 2nd February 2011

New GP2 entrant Team AirAsia took to the track for the first time in Abu Dhabi today, at the first official test of the GP2 Asia Series 2011. Both test drivers, Luiz Razia and Davide Valsecchi, were first out on the dusty track, running on new Pirelli tyres. Valsecchi completed two installation laps, and Luiz Razia four laps, before the session was stopped early following a sand storm. In the afternoon session, Razia was once again the first out, for the later session, this time in wet conditions, completing a total of 40 laps, with a best time of 1:51.49. Davide, who ran later in the session on a dry track, recorded a time of 1:51.01 and completed a total of 24 laps.

Testing resumes Thursday 3rd February - 09:00 -12:00 & 14:00 – 17:00 (local time +4hrs GMT).

Team Manager Phill Spencer; “I’m very pleased with how it all went today. The weather played a big part today, with a lot of sand on the track this morning and then rain at lunchtime, which actually cleaned the track and helped this afternoon. We worked through the plans with aero-testing this morning and making sure both drivers were comfortable in the car and with the engineers and ccrew. So all in all we had a very productive day. We were not necessarily the quickest out there, but we learnt a lot. I’m really pleased with how it all looked too. The cars, the presentation of the garage, and how everyone in the team performed.”

Humphrey Corbett, Chief Engineer, “I am very pleased with how today went, we couldn’t have asked for a better day! The cars went famously, we might have had a few minor issues but the drivers are happy, and nothing went drastically wrong, so we are very pleased indeed. We decided to save our tyres for tomorrow whereas most teams ran new tyres towards the end of the session, and we will find out a little more about just how quick the car is tomorrow. But the drivers did a fantastic job, so all in all a good day!”

Davide Valsecchi; “The condition of the track today wasn’t great, I think it was dirtier than normal - they tried to clean it for the afternoon session, which helped, but then it started to rain, so we lost two and a half hours waiting for it to dry out. In the end we had the last two hours to work with, and we weren’t perfect but the car and seat are new and the conditions tricky, so it was hard to bring the car to the limit. Tomorrow we will look after the performance and see where we are standing at the end of the day.”

Luiz Razia “This is a great track to test at, although this morning the conditions were quite difficult. Early on we were concentrating on doing some straight runs and collecting data. In the afternoon we focused more on performance, but we still have a lot of things to try, especially with a new car on new tyres. The end part of the day wasn’t so great, but we have a lot of information that we will now analyse so we can be ready for tomorrow.”
