In the Pali canon, the Middle Way (majjhimā paṭipadā) was said to have been articulated by the Buddha in his first discourse, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (SN 56.11):
"Monks, these two extremes ought not to be practiced by one who has gone forth from the household life. (What are the two?) There is addiction to indulgence of sense-pleasures, which is low, coarse, the way of ordinary people, unworthy, and unprofitable; and there is addiction to self-mortification, which is painful, unworthy, and unprofitable.
"Avoiding both these extremes, the Tathagata has realized the Middle Path; it gives vision, gives knowledge, and leads to calm, to insight, to enlightenment and to Nibbana. And what is that Middle Path realized by the Tathagata...? It is the Noble Eightfold path, and nothing else, namely: right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration."[4]

Tathagata in Pali sources simply describe the enlightened being's relationship with the mortal realm:As was sitting there, he said to Venerable Maha Kotthita, "Now then, friend Kotthita, does the Tathagata exist after death?" "That, friend, has not been declared by the Blessed One: 'The Tathagata exists after death.'" "Well then, friend Kotthita, does the Tathagata not exist after death?" "Friend, that too has not been declared by the Blessed One: 'The Tathagata does not exist after death.'" "Then does the Tathagata both exist and not exist after death?" "That has not been declared by the Blessed One: 'The Tathagata both exists and does not exist after death.'" "Well then, does the Tathagata neither exist nor not exist after death?" "That too has not been declared by the Blessed One: 'The Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist after death.'" "Now, friend Kotthita, when asked if the Tathagata exists after death, you say, 'That has not been declared by the Blessed One: "The Tathagata exists after death."' When asked if the Tathagata does not exist after death... both exists and does not exist after death... neither exists nor does not exist after death, you say, 'That too has not been declared by the Blessed One: "The Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist after death."' Now, what is the cause, what is the reason, why that has not been declared by the Blessed One?" (SN 44.6)

Now, Anuradha, since a Tathagata is not to be found in this very life, is it proper for you to say: 'This noble and supreme one has pointed out and explained these four propositions:
A Tathagata exists after death;
A Tathagata does not exist after death;
A Tathagata exists and yet does not exist after death;
A Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist after death?'

(Anuradha Sutta - Samyutta Nikaya.)

Budda ( one who has gone so; the Enlighten One.

"The Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist after death."' Now, what is the cause, what is the reason, why that has not been declared by the Blessed One?"

"The Budda ( one who has gone so; the Enlighten One. )  neither exists nor does not exist after death."' Now, what is the cause, what is the reason, why that has not been declared by the Blessed One?"

Tathagata ,the Budda  , the Enlighten One -有何分别,还是可通用的?
