Boon Heong: It’s difficult to emulate Nicol’s feat
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: Doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong takes his hat off to squash player Nicol David for her astounding eight-title achievement in a one season.
Boon Heong and his partner, Koo Kien Keat, have a shot at achieving the same feat this year but the former said that it would be a tough act to follow.
World number one Nicol won the Hong Kong Open on Sunday to cap her best-ever season in her professional career – claiming eight titles in 11 tournament she competed in this year.
Boon Heong-Kien Keat, who are also the world number one, have won six Open titles on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar thus far this year.
They were winners at the Malaysian Open, All-England, Swiss Open, the Philippines Open, Macau Open and Danish Open.
Boon Heong: ‘I do not go into tournaments with my mind on setting this kind of record. It creates additional pressure’
And the 2006 Asian Games champions could make it eight if they come out tops in the back-to-back Open tournaments in China and Hong Kong, beginning next week.
“Yes, Nicol has done well. Winning so many titles in a year is not easy, especially back-to-back titles. It can be very demanding and tiring,” said Boon Heong.
“I do not go into tournaments with my mind on setting this kind of record. It creates additional pressure. I can only promise that we will give our best.
“It will not be easy for us to win both the China and Hong Kong Open. They are the last two Super Series tournaments and competition will be great.
“Besides, my condition is not so good. It has been a hectic year and I am feeling lethargic. I have one more week to improve on my physical condition.”
National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky, who enjoyed an unbeaten run on international stage for almost two years as a player with Ricky Subagja, also has praises for Nicol.
“Nicol is an aspiration to other Malaysian athletes. She is the lone Malaysian in the world squash scene winning honours. She also wins back-to-back titles. Much can be learnt from her,” said the Indonesian.
On whether Boon Heong-Kien Keat can make it eight too in one season, Rexy said: “I am hoping for them to win at least one of the back-to-back titles. It will be great if they can win both.
“But their condition is not that good. The outings in Europe (Danish and French Open) took its toll on them. I am putting Boon Heong through a lot of physical training. Hopefully, they will be ready for the upcoming Opens.” |
