1. The megapixel war actually ended when Nokia launched the 808 Pureview with 41 megapixels.
2. Please do not misunderstand, it is not because the 41MP was sky-high and no other manufacturer are able to replicate it. While this is true, that is not the real reason.
2. Nokia went on to explain that more pixels does not equate to better image quality, in fact it makes an image even more noisy because each pixel is small.
3. Therefore, Nokia actually increased the sensor size FIVE TIMES bigger. It is like stitching together 5 sensors from iPhone5 or SGS3. So, having 5 times more pixels (8x5=40) does not result in more noise, because the sensor used is 5x larger! It is actually larger than most Point and Shoot cameras, and nearly the same size of the Nikon J1/V1.
4. With larger sensor, we can crop the image without losing details (i.e. lossless digital zoom).
5. Under low light situation, Nokia combined the pixels to create superpixels. Instead of having 5x the number of normal pixels, we now have pixels that are 5 times bigger. In fact, if you select the 2MP option, each superpixel has the same size as those used in DSLR.
Therefore the conclusion is:
1. Nokia invented a super-high MP camera
2. Nokia then explained when super-high MP is useful, which is under good lighting conditions when you can crop without losing details.
3. Nokia also explained that super-high MP is not good during low light, but by combining the small pixels into large pixels, we will get excellent noise reduction.
Point #3 is the part that HTC had copied with its latest phone. Because HTC did not use a larger sensor (only normal 1/3", the pixel size is much smaller compared to the 808. But under good lighting conditions, pixel size is less important, and the HTC image quality will suffer from lack of details thanks to the low resolution.
