Monza Race One

by Caterham Racing on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 2:21am ·

After putting in a strong performance in qualifying expectations were high for Dutch driver Giedo van der Garde who began in P2 on the grid for the GP2 feature race in Monza. However, hopes were quickly dashed at the first corner of the race when his car suffered technical difficulties, forcing van der Garde to pull over and retire at only turn one of the first lap, leaving him bitterly disappointed.

A good start saw teammate Rodolfo Gonzalez gain several places in the opening laps before pitting on lap seven and losing a little momentum. Gonzalez managed to gain three positions from his starting place of P25, finishing the race P22.

Rodolfo Gonzalez P22 “After a good start I lost several positions when I had to brake hard on the long straight. Then, as I came in to pit, the track was very congested and I was caught up in it a bit and unfortunately lost a little ground. After the pitstop I got going again, my pace was good over the last few laps but it was all too little too late. On a positive note, we showed our potential in spells over the latter stages of the race so there’s hope we can have a better day on Sunday.”

Giedo van der Garde – DNF “A technical issue arose with my steering very early on and that was it for me. It is a real shame. Yesterday everything felt so good and I truly believed we would win the race, but luck was not on our side and it wasn’t meant to be. But, we have to accept it, move on, and refocus for Sunday's race. I will be starting at the back of the grid and will have my work cut out, but I believe we have the car to do it. Our aim has to be to finish in the points.”

Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer “We are all disappointed as we have missed a great opportunity to make valuable ground in the championship. To retire so soon having laid such great foundations in qualifying is hard to stomach. Giedo immediately experienced difficulties with his steering at the first corner and by turn two he was out of the race. As for Rodolfo, he made his usual good start at the back of the grid only to get slowed up at the first chicane by several cars. He raced hard from there on in but after a lengthy pit stop finished in P22, concluding a disappointing day for Caterham Racing. ”

Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett “I am obviously very disappointed. After qualifying I felt we had a very strong car and expected be in the points with Giedo starting in P2. Unfortunately, we leave the track on Saturday with nothing and are left scratching our heads. We are still investigating the problem but it looks like it might have been a software glitch. Meanwhile, Rodolfo had an ok race given his starting place. A difficult pit stop hindered his progress and there was just too much ground for him to make to up. All in all we have a lot of work to do before the sprint race but of course we will come back fighting and see what we can salvage from the weekend.”

Monza Race Two

by Caterham Racing on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 8:21pm ·

Giedo van der Garde made up an impressive 15 places to finish P10 in the GP2 sprint race in Monza, charging from the back of the grid and using all his skill and determination to negotiate the field and record an impressive top ten finish at the chequered flag.
Rodolfo Gonzalez once again made a good start and managed to climb three places from his grid position to finish the race P20. On reaching the flag Gonzalez pulled the curtain down on what can only be described as a disappointing weekend for Caterham Racing after such a promising performance in Friday’s qualifying session, in which van der Garde made P2.
The team now looks ahead to the series finale in Singapore, where they will hope to put in a more consistent performance in pursuit of valuable championship points. Caterham Racing still has an outside chance of securing a top three finish in the drivers’ championship with van der Garde currently sitting 19 points off third place.
Giedo van der Garde – P10 “Today’s race was as satisfying as it was frustrating. Starting in P26 I was able to drive with freedom as I really didn’t have anything to lose, and it was a very enjoyable experience. The car was in great condition and I kept pace with the leaders throughout. I knew after Friday’s qualifying session that we had a car that could compete and today’s performance only served to prove that. With a little more luck we would be leaving Monza and heading to Singapore still competitive in both championships. As it is, I have an outside chance of finishing third in the drivers championship and will head into the Singapore finale full of confidence that we can do just that.”
Rodolfo Gonzalez P20 “On the whole I am happy with how I started in both races this weekend, but am frustrated that I failed to sustain that momentum throughout.  On a positive note I gained positions and finished both events. However, I am unhappy with my consistency throughout the season and will look to improve in Singapore to try and make sure I finish on a high.”
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer “We have had two fast cars here in Monza this weekend but sadly luck just wasn’t on our side.  Both drivers made a good start today and Giedo drove extremely well to carve his way through the field to finish tenth, while Rodolfo had a clean race and finished 20th. But it’s a disappointing weekend overall. Now we move on to Singapore with high hopes that we can finish with some points and put on a good performance in front of the Asian fans we know will be supporting us all weekend.”

Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett “Giedo drove superbly well and only just missed out on two points for the fastest lap. Gaining 15 places is testament to the condition the car was in, but also the quality he has as a race driver. It has been a frustrating weekend, but today gives us great confidence going into Singapore. We are yet to race there, but expect to have great support and, with a little luck, we should be able to end the season on a high and give the fans something to cheer about.”

Singapore race preview

by Caterham Racing on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 3:29am ·

The GP2 Series draws to a close with the season finale staged for the very first time at the Marina Bay circuit in Singapore.
A relatively new track to the Formula One race calendar, Singapore was introduced in 2008 as the first night race in F1 history. The Marina Bay street circuit has since proved to be a huge hit making it an obvious choice for the twelfth and final round of the 2012 GP2 Series, bringing to an end a memorable 2012 championship.
With the Pirelli soft and super soft compounds at the teams’ disposal in Singapore, pit stop strategy will, as always, be a crucial decision in the battle to collect the last remaining championship points of the season. Only the Valencia street circuit contains more corners than that of Singapore and whilst only two of the corners are fast, high humidity and ambient Asian temperatures will create demanding conditions, not only for the drivers but for the cars and tyres too. And with just a 30-minute practice session to learn the track Singapore looks set to host the GP2 season finale in spectacular style.
Rodolfo Gonzalez “I feel like I have learnt a lot this season with Caterham Racing and I am ready and raring to get out there and see what this track is really like! It will be the first time any of us GP2 drivers have driven here and it will be interesting to see how everyone gets on. Anything can happen during the race so my main aim must be to get the best qualifying position possible to give ourselves the best opportunity of scoring points and finishing well. It is quite a bumpy track with a lot of tight corners so it will be hard on the tyres, especially the rears. Keeping it on track and preserving the tyres will be fundamental but after a lot of laps in the simulator I feel quite confident that I know the track layout and am looking forward to getting out there and giving it everything I’ve got.”
Giedo van der Garde “It is a pity that this is our last race as I believe we have finally found the ideal setup and have a car that is very competitive. However, due to incidents and bad luck the last few race results have not reflected this. But this is a new track for everyone and I look forward to seeing what we can get out of it here. I think our basic setup will work well - it will be a matter of learning the track quickly but for me I don’t think it will be a big problem, and if we can qualify in the top five I will be happy as we can do a lot from there. The most important thing is to score maximum points so we can continue the fight for P3 in the championship.”
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer “There is an air of excitement as we head into our final round of the season in Singapore. This is a new venue for GP2 and with no previous data for the circuit we are all on a level playing field and it will be interesting to see who can learn the track the fastest. The humidity here is intense and will affect everybody but as long we all stay hydrated the team is used to it and I see no reason why we can’t do well. The drivers are fit and looking forward to this new challenge so I am optimistic we can finish the season on a high note and give the Asian crowds a good show.”
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett “I am confident we can give both our drivers a good car for the final round of our season, regardless of the fact we have never raced here before. Since the track is ordinarily used as a road it will evolve a lot during the weekend and will be very green to start with. With this in mind we must be careful not to fall into the trap of adjusting the car too much after the first session. It is a very bumpy track with high downforce and a difficult track for the drivers to learn, however Giedo and Rodolfo have been working hard in preparation. The Friday practice session will be about collecting as much data as possible and with just a few short hours between our first run and qualifying, time will be tight and drivers will need to stay fully focused. We need a clean qualifying lap to put us in the best position for race one and from there stay clear of the barriers! It’s all or nothing now!”
GP2 Schedule

Singapore Race One

by Caterham Racing on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 12:03pm ·

An exciting GP2 title deciding weekend began at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore with ex-Caterham Racing and current DAMs driver Davide Valsecchi being crowned champion after a season dominating the field.
For Caterham Racing’s current drivers, a strong performance in race one saw Giedo van der Garde finish in the points, taking P8 from P14 on the grid. The Dutchman gained three positions in the opening lap and was in hot pursuit of his competitors before pitting. He battled long and hard throughout the race and was finally rewarded with four championship points for his efforts. Eight place also means Giedo start in the coveted pole position for Sundays’ sprint race, with hopes of a final race win in sight.
Sadly things were no better for Caterham Racing teammate Rodolfo Gonzalez, who, after a difficult qualifying session, did not finish the race. The Venezuelan’s car was damaged when an incident on lap one knocked the steering out of line and broke his suspension. Unable to carry on Rodolfo was forced to retire from the race early, sadly taking him out of the running and placing him P23 on the grid for race two.
Giedo van der Garde “We made some changes to the car which worked well in certain areas of the track but perhaps not so well in others. But overall I feel I really got amongst it today and had some good battles. I made a good start and was quickly up to P10 and catching up with the guys in front. We lost a position in the pit stops which was a real pity, especially because I know we were quicker. When I got back out I was battling hard for three or four corners but lost a couple of places before we finally made it back up to finish P8. It was a good race for me and I am happy with the result, especially starting from P14 - our main aim today was to finish top eight and we achieved that. We have some changes to make to the car before the sprint race tomorrow but I am confident we can do something good from pole position.”
Rodolfo Gonzalez “I had barely got going when I was hit hard on lap one. The impact broke my suspension and from there I struggled. The steering was bent and the steering wheel shook at high speed, it was just too dangerous to carry on so I pulled over before we even had a chance to collect much track information. It is such a shame because the car had been feeling really good and my pace was quite competitive. I just hope we can have a clean second race and finish the season with a good result.”
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer “Sadly Rodolfo was hit in the first lap which knocked his steering out and subsequently damaged his suspension. Following that he had a coming together with Teixeira which caused further damage, forcing him into the pits for an unscheduled stop. The team made some repairs and fitted a new nose before sending him back out but almost immediately he parked up, retiring from the race as a safety precaution. He said the steering was too bent and that the car was too damaged to continue. On the other hand Giedo had a fine race. He had with some really good battles with Calado and one or two other drivers and it feels nice to finish in the points. We have set ourselves up to start in pole position for the Sunday race so hopefully from there we can lead the way and finish the season on the podium.”
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett “Rodolfo was once again unlucky. He was taken out early on when someone made a risky manoeuvre and collided with his car. The incident bent his steering so much there was a lot of play in it and it became too difficult to drive. After one trip to the pit lane Rodolfo made the wise decision to stop for safety reasons. I feel sorry for him as he said before the race that the car felt good so we will keep a similar set-up for the race tomorrow and hope for a better run.
“As for Giedo, he will start in pole position for the Singapore sprint after a good strong race one. It’s a great result for the team, especially considering where he started. He said the car was ok but that towards the end the tyres were completely shot. We really have to look at preserving the tyres a little more but we think we know what we need to do now. If Giedo can get a good start and drive his own race we are in with a good chance of finishing the season with some silverware and that would be fantastic!”

Singapore Race Two

by Caterham Racing on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 10:15pm ·

Caterham Racing concluded the GP2 season in fine style in Singapore, celebrating a sensational race win at the Marina Bay Circuit in Sunday’s sprint race.
Putting the misfortune in qualifying behind them Dutchman Giedo van der Garde capitalised on his excellent eighth place finish in Saturday’s race one, which saw him start on pole in race two and he never looked back, dominating the race from grid to flag. He set a searing pace right from the start with him and iSport's Marcus Ericssons gaining  a six second lead early in the race. The lead was only tentatively threatened when the safety car was brought out, giving the field a brief chance to close the gap on the leaders. However, van der Garde controlled his pace perfectly and finished the last race of the season with a win, putting him into sixth place in the Drivers’ Championship.

Fortunes were different for team mate Rodolfo Gonzalez, who once again started the race powerfully but, after a promising start from P20, the Venezuelan battled with high tyre degradation throughout the second half of the race and finished P18.

The win sees Caterham Racing finish seventh in the Teams’ Championship, which, coupled with van der Garde's sixth place in the Drivers’ Championship, makes 2012 a satisfying season for the Anglo / Malaysian team.

Giedo van der Garde “I really went for it at the beginning of the race. I felt totally in control as Ericsson and I pulled away from the rest of the field. The car was handling well and felt vastly improved from yesterday. The field congested slightly when the safety car came out but I managed to pull away again, and see the race home. My tyres went off a little towards the end of the race but so did Ericsson’s and we were able to maintain the lead. I have to thank the team for the changes they made to the car. Everything clicked today and in the end it was a smooth victory. This year we have managed to create a really competitive car that is quick in qualifying and can win races. This was our aim and although it is a shame we didn’t finish top three in the championship, to end the season like this is brilliant.”

Rodolfo Gonzalez “The car felt good today, we were keeping up with the pace in the first half of the race but then suffered badly with the tyres. It got worse after the safety car so in hindsight perhaps we should have come in for fresh tyres during that time. It’s a disappointing result, especially after such a good start, but this has been a positive year for me. I have learnt a lot this season for which I must thank the team.”

Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer “We are all incredibly happy to finish with this win after a long hard season. We didn’t get off to the best of starts but everybody pulled together and we managed to turn things around as the season progressed. I am very proud of the whole team and to end with this victory at this fantastic circuit is a fitting and wonderful feeling, a feeling made that little bit more special by having Tony Fernandes and some of our shareholders here to celebrate with us."

"Giedo was outstanding today. He controlled the pace so well, and earned his victory and I am very pleased for him taking sixth in the Drivers’ Cchampionship. He should be proud as it is well deserved. Rodolfo also had a good run today it was great to see him finish the race. He battled hard and managed to control the car when the tyre degradation set in. It’s been a positive season overall and now I’m already looking forward to next year!”

Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett “What a fantastic way to finish the season. It had been coming for a while, but we knew what we had to do and Giedo did it! The car was competitive and he drove well from start to finish so all credit it to him. We should have been in this position a few races ago but that’s racing for you and overall I am very happy. We tried something new on Rodolfo’s car today. We all agreed it was worth the try even though he suffered very high tyre degradation. Still we managed to collect some very useful data for testing and for this circuit next year so I am happy. We finished seventh and Giedo also finished sixth in the Drivers’ Championship so I will go home smiling! ”

Barcelona Test - Day 1
  • Added:                Tue 30 Oct, 2012

Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona - 30/10/12

Caterham Racing enjoyed a successful first day at the Official GP2test in Barcelona with Alexander Rossi and Lucas Foresti behind thewheel. Cool but dry conditions around the 4,655 km Circuit deCatalunya allowed mostly long uninterrupted sessions, perfect forForesti's maiden GP2 outing and enabling Rossi to re-familiarisehimself with the car.

The morning session saw both Caterham drivers complete over 20 lapson one set of tyres, providing a valuable insight into the handlingand tyre degradation of the GP2 car.

In the afternoon session both drivers made excellent progress andat the flag Rossi was P5 and Foresti P13 in the standings.

Alexander Rossi "It was great to get back inthe GP2 car and work with the Caterham Racing team again. Havingraced here a few weeks ago, I know my way around Barcelona. I spentthe morning adjusting my driving style to suit the GP2 car, whichreacts to input much differently than a World Series car. Thisafternoon we made big steps forward and finishing P5 in the finalsession leaves me feeling confident for tomorrow. The weather willmost likely be different tomorrow with rain forecast, but this is agood opportunity for us to work on our wet set up."
Lucas Foresti "It was a busy day and I had somuch to learn about the car, adapting to the power and tyres. Thetyres are very different to World Series but I am learning! I amreally enjoying working with the team and tomorrow I will try somequalifying and race simulation runs, but for today I am pleasedwith my progress."

Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer "Ourfirst day of testing in Barcelona has gone pretty smoothly and itwas great to see the cars back out on track. The drivers and theteam have been brilliant and we are all pleased with the endresult. It was just a shame that the last new tyre runs werehampered by a red flag but we are looking forward to day 2."

Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett "Iam very pleased with the progress both drivers have made today andwe completed our heavy test programme without incident. Our aimtoday was to ensure both drivers recorded as many laps as possiblewhich we achieved. The plan tomorrow will very much depend on theweather but for now we have a good amount of data to run throughthis evening."

Barcelona GP2 Test - Day Two
  • Added:                Wed 31 Oct, 2012

Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona - 31/10/12

Day 2 of the Official GP2 test in Barcelona started slowly withonly three drivers setting lap times in the first hour astorrential rain saturated the circuit creating treacherousconditions.

The rain abated a few hours into the session and both AlexanderRossi and Lucas Foresti ventured on track. The drivers quicklyadapted to the wet conditions and after seven laps Rossi topped thetimes with Foresti not far behind. The session became extremelycompetitive as the track dried with different drivers topping thetiming screens every few seconds.

The afternoon session started at 1pm and on a drying track CaterhamRacing put both drivers out on slick tyres. Rossi quickly set thepace on new tyres and topped the times for the majority of thesession, remaining P1 at the flag with a time of 1:31.173. Forestiwas less lucky and finished the session P24 after both his flyinglaps on new tyres were hampered by red flags and a spin. Foresti'ssector times in S1 and S2 prior to the red flag were good enough toput him in the top five and the team are very happy with theperformance of both drivers.

Alexander Rossi "This morning was very goodexperience for me to test the Pirelli wets and we spent most of themorning trying different tyre pressures. This afternoon we went outon slicks and although there was less grip than in yesterday'ssession the car felt quick. It was a great test with CaterhamRacing and I am very pleased to finish the afternoon with thefastest time, now I am really looking forward to seeing what we cando in Jerez next month."

Lucas Foresti "Today was challenging but Ireally enjoyed the session this morning and now I have a goodunderstanding of the GP2 car in wet conditions. This afternoon wasa little frustrating as the car felt good but there were so manyred flags that I didn't get a clean lap on my new tyres. I wouldlike to congratulate the team as they have a really fast car anddid a great job."

Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer "I amvery pleased with the performance of both the drivers and the teamtoday in tricky conditions.  It is great to see Alexander atthe top of the times and Lucas was just unlucky with the red flagsthis afternoon, meaning he could not put a lap together on newtyres. We have concluded a good test here in Barcelona with bothdry and wet running and now look forward to Jerez inNovember".

Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett"We are very happy with Alexander's performance in both sessionsand he worked extremely well with his engineer Patrick Coorey toachieve his times. We were equally impressed with Lucas' feedbackand he shows real promise following his first GP2 test. Thisafternoon was unfortunate and we are sure Lucas would have beenclose to the top of the time sheets given a clear lap, it has beena very successful test and great experience in wet and dryconditions."

Caterham Racing now look forward to the final outing of 2012 at thepost season test in Jerez on 22nd/23rd November where AlexanderRossi returns to the driving seat and the second driver willbe announced in due course.

GP2 team, Caterham Racing has today confirmed Mia Sharizman asTeam Principal.
Having played an integral role in the creation and growth ofCaterham F1 Team, Mia has also been centrally involved in CaterhamRacing since its inception in 2011 and will now lead the team intoits 2013 Championship campaign, alongside Team Manager PhillSpencer and Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett.

Caterham Racing Team Principal Mia Sharizman "Iam very happy to have the opportunity to lead Caterham Racing andto help continue its growth. Although we are a young team, we havethe same aims and ambitions as the more established teams and I amdelighted to help the team achieve its long-term goals.
One of the main purposes of creating the Caterham Racing GP2team was as a development platform for drivers, mechanics andengineers who want to progress to Caterham F1 Team. We have workedhard to achieve this and this year it has worked extremely wellwith Giedo Van der Garde making the step up from GP2 to Caterham F1Team, whilst two further team members, mechanics MattSmith and Brian Brown have also been promoted.
"I am optimistic about the targets that we have set ourselvesfor 2013 and beyond and I want to build on the achievements theteam have already recorded, including winning the most prestigiousevent on the GP2 calendar, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the 2012season finale in Singapore.
"We are very excited about the season ahead and I am alreadylooking forward to the first GP2 race, which, appropriately for me,takes place in my home country of Malaysia."
Cyril Abiteboul, Team Principal Caterham F1Team: "Mia's appointment to GP2 Team Principal givesCaterham Racing new leadership as it enters its third season in GP2and establishes another clear link between Caterham F1 Team andCaterham Racing, beyond sharing the same base in Leafield,Oxfordshire.
"Mia has been integrally involved in the creation anddevelopment of both teams since their inception in 2009 and 2010respectively. He has an in-depth knowledge of the global motorsportindustry and he is well placed to help lead Caterham Racing ontomore success, and to help young drivers, mechanics and engineersuse the ladder we have established to take themselves into thehighest echelons of our industry.
"While our F1 team is still young and growing, the GP2 team hasshown since its inception in 2011 that it can win races and be oneof the most competitive teams on the grid.. Both our GP2 and F1teams complement each other well and, while achieving the sort ofsuccess Caterham Racing has enjoyed in GP2 is part of a longer-termgoal in F1, we are heading in the right direction to be able tooffer skilful drivers a clear line from the last rung on the ladderin GP2 to the first step into F1."

GP2 Qualifying - Sepang

Sepang International Circuit 22/03/13
Car # 14 - Sergio Canamasas - P12 - 145.497
Car #15 - Ma Qing Hua - P19 - 1.44.761
At 15.55, track temperatures hit 40 degrees and the first GP2qualifying session of 2013 got underway. The entire field took tothe track on the Pirelli soft tyre and with a two lap window perset to achieve a time, the pressure was on.
Ma built up his speed gradually and came alive on his second setof tyres, putting everything together and improving by over 0.5s onhis final run, claiming P19 on the grid for tomorrow's race.
Canamasas set the fastest first sector of the session and provedhe had a quick car, his flying laps on the second set of tyres werehampered by a yellow flag and a slow car, but he managed to placehimself P12 on the time sheets.
With just under five tenths separating the top twelve, the fieldis tight and the season opener promises to be a closely contestedrace.
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer "Weare exceptionally pleased with the performance of both drivers inqualifying today and the team have worked extremely hard in thisheat. Ma has improved massively throughout the day, as he learntthe circuit and Sergio has shown that he has good pace from theword go. Let's see what tomorrow brings."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer HumphreyCorbett "I am happy with the result following astandard dry qualifying session. Neither drivers put a foot wrongand were happy with the balance of the car.  It was a shamethat Sergio encountered traffic on his final fast lap as he couldhave been further up the grid and Ma learnt so much, improving justover half a second on his final lap. We feel that we have got agood race car for the drivers and will see what the conditions holdtomorrow"
Sergio Canamasas: "This was my first qualifyingat this circuit following a short free practice, so at the start ofthe session I was building up my speed. I did the fastest firstsector in both runs and we have a quick car. The problem was that Ihad a yellow flag on my first push lap and then I was blocked on mysecond lap, which is a shame as I feel we had the potential to betop six. It will be interesting to see how the car reacts in therace on a long run and I look forward to it."
Ma Qing Hua "This is my first time in the carat a GP2 race weekend and I had a thirty minute practice session tolearn the circuit this morning. I looked through the data beforequalifying and felt focussed going into the session. It wasdifficult as there is only really one lap on the soft compoundtyres to get a quick time.  I didn't get the best out of myfirst run due to traffic but I took one push lap and put everythingtogether on my second set of tyres and qualified19th.  I am very happy to be working with the teamand now I will relax and focus on tomorrow's race."

Sepang International Circuit - GP2 SprintRace
Sunday 24th March 2013
Car #14 Sergio Canamasas - P15
Car #15 Ma Qing Hua - DNS
Race length: 22 laps
Lap Length: 5.543 Km
Tyre use:  P Zero Orange hard
On Sunday morning Caterham Racing GP2 driver Ma Qing Hua wascertified as unfit to drive in the GP2 sprint race by medical staffat Sepang International Circuit and the FIA, having been diagnosedwith gastroenteritis. This was a great blow for the Chinese driverwho managed to make it through the feature race on Saturday, inspite of his illness.
Sergio Canamasas was left to fly the flag for Caterham Racing infront of the Malaysian crowd and made yet another admirable start, from that point running twelfth for the majority of the race. Bylap 16 the tyre degradation was high and Sergio could not maintainposition, slipping back to fifteenth at the flag.
It has been a challenging weekend, but the team have workedtirelessly in the Malaysian heat and now look ahead to Bahrain andthe next rounds on 20th and 21st April.
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer: "Itwas a shame to be running just one car today but Ma was unable torace due to his stomach virus. Sergio started 19th dueto the incident in yesterday's race and made another goodstart.  He was running a strong 12th but with sixlaps to go the tyres started to drop off and he lost severalplaces. Now we move on to Bahrain and hope everyone is fit and wellfor the next rounds."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer HumphreyCorbett: "It was a tough day, especially for Ma who wantedto race and has the heart of a tiger, but sadly because of hisillness he could not compete and we hope he improves quickly.Sergio started close to the back after the problem on Saturdaywhich was always going to make his sprint race difficult but hedrove well and brought home the car in fifteenth. In some ways westarted from fresh today as we learnt nothing about the tyres inrace one after the incident. If we had known yesterday what we knowtoday we may have changed the setup slightly to reduce tyre wear. However, now we have plenty of data and will be well equipped forBahrain."
Sergio Canamasas "I made another good start andwas trying to pass for 11th place and pushed hard but mytyres didn't last and I suffered more than the guys around me. Inthe end the tyre degradation meant I just didn't have the pace anddropped back. I hope in Bahrain we will be able to solve this andI'm looking forward to working on that with my engineers.  NowI have more understanding of the 2013 tyres and the need to besmooth with the car so I think we have the potential to be quick -it is just a matter of putting everything together.

Practice - 12.00 - 12.30
Car # 14 - Sergio Canamasas - P14 - 1:43.092
Car #15 - Alexander Rossi - P4 - 1:42.636
Qualifying: 16.00 - 16.30
Car # 14 - Sergio Canamasas - P16 - 1.41.229 (demoted to p26following stewards' decision)
Car #15 - Alexander Rossi - P7 - 1.40.756
Following a successful morning practice session Alexander Rossirepeated his performance in qualifying and was running P3 on hisfirst set of tyres. His second tyre run was more difficult as theentire field hit the track and although the pace was there he wasforced to overtake during his push laps, ending the session P7.
For his first time at the Bahrain Circuit Sergio performed wellas he put his simulator work into practice on track. He had adifficult qualifying session which was hampered by traffic, butfinally achieved his best time on lap 11 when his tyres weredegrading heavily. Sergio was P16 at the chequered flag but wasunfortunately disqualified from qualifying following an on-trackincident and will start Saturday's race at the back of thegrid.
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer"It was a difficult qualifying session as bothdrivers struggled to get a clean lap. Sergio suffered more thanmost but posted a decent time on his last lap. After qualifying hewas then called to the steward's office following an incident andhas been moved to the back of the grid. This is very disappointingbut he will race from there and see what he can do.
"I am thoroughly impressed with Alexander's driving and he hasfound his place within the team very easily. Knowing the guys andengineers really helped and he has proven his talent during bothpractice and qualifying. He is in a great position for tomorrow'sfeature race and we are very pleased to have him on the team."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett"A good performance all round, despite the traffic hamperingSergio's session and it is a great shame that he will start fromthe back of the grid following the stewards' decision.
"Alexander did a great job for his first time back in the GP2car, having never driven with the new compound tyres. From where weare we have the potential to score points tomorrow and possibly atrophy on Sunday.
"From an engineering point of view, this circuit is hard onbrakes and brake stability is very important. We changed the carsvery little between sessions and have a good race setup so we arelooking forward to seeing good performances from both drivers inthe feature and sprint races."
Sergio Canamasas "After a good practice sessionI'm obviously disappointed with how qualifying has ended up. I hadno chance to get a clean lap as there was so much traffic and whenI managed to get a time at the end of the session I was lucky butmy tyres were no good. It is a pity as with only six or seventenths I could have been top ten. I'll put today behind me and moveon to tomorrow where I'm sure I can put in a good performance, building on what we achieved in practice on a track that was new tome."
Alexander Rossi "This morningwas my first time back in a GP2 car and it's great to be back witha team I know so well. The car felt good right from the start ofthe practice session and I had a great opportunity to startunderstanding how the 2013 Pirelli tyres work and get myself backinto a rhythm in the cockpit. My time with the F1 team this yearhas also been really beneficial as I've had a detailed insight intothe way the tyres perform in a number of different circuit andweather environments and that's definitely going to help me allseason.
"I was pretty happy with how the practice session ended, finishing up in P4 and knowing there was room for improvement - formy first day back in the car I couldn't have hoped for much moreand want to thank the whole team for helping me have such apositive start to our campaign.
"In qualifying I was out on the option tyre for the first timeand just looked to do the best I could. The first run went well andwe were P3 when I pitted for my second set of tyres. We didn't makeany setup changes but tried a different strategy, meaning we wereout of sync with the other cars on their slow laps. In the end thisdidn't work out and we weren't able to improve quite as much as wewould have liked but the car felt great and I'm really lookingforward to the race tomorrow. After seven months out of the car Iam even more motivated to do a good job and with the guys I havearound me I'm sure we can do well."

Alexander Rossi made an impressive start to his GP2 campaignwith Caterham Racing, finishing the Bahrain GP2 feature race inthird position, scoring 15 points and taking seventh in theDrivers' Championship.
Sergio Canamasas had a more challenging afternoon. Having beendisqualified from qualifying on Friday he started the race from theback of the grid but he dug deep and managed to overtake six carsin the first few laps and was running a comfortable 20thwhen he was issued with a drive through penalty for a racingincident, effectively putting an end to his race.
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer: "Iam absolutely delighted with today's result. These are the firstpoints for the team this season and we are very pleased to haveAlexander back in the car. Third place in his first race is a greatboost for everyone in the team.
"Sergio was unfortunately issued with a drive-through penaltywhich he had to take during the race but he keeps pushing and willwork hard with the team to gain some results this season.
"With Alexander starting 6th and Sergio20th for Sunday's sprint race there is no reason why weshould not score more points."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer  Humphrey Corbett"I am chuffed for Alexander and all of the team, especially James who engineers his car and who did a great jobtoday with a driver who clearly has great promise. All in all thishas been the best day for Caterham  Racing by a long way thisseason and we are just so pleased for Alexander - the comebackkid!
"Sadly, Sergio was involved in an on-track incident and finishedtowards the rear of the field, but he was happy with the setup ofhis car and it was always going to be tough starting from the backof the grid. He will come back tomorrow with renewed energy andmove forwards."
Alexander Rossi "Today was a great result formy GP2 series debut and Caterham Racing. I could not have asked formore than a podium and now we can build on that for tomorrow's raceand the remainder of the season.
"I grabbed two places on the first lap, running fifth up to thepit stop. The guys did a great job and I rejoined the track thirdon the road, balancing not to push too hard while looking after thetyres to the end of the race. Nasr was closing fast behind meat the end, but I had enough to hold him off and keep him behindme.
"It was obviously not ideal to miss winter testing and the firstround of the Championship, however I've made very few changes tothe car all weekend. James my engineer gave me a great baseline andracecar this weekend, which I capitalised on today. It's importantfor me to build on this and I want to thank Tony Fernandes, CyrilAbiteboul and Caterham Racing Team Principal Mia Sharizman forhaving faith in me and giving me the chance to show what I cando."
"Caterham Racing is a great team and I feel very comfortablewith all the guys. Tomorrow will be calmer for me and startingfifth on the grid I can go out, enjoy the race and hopefully get onthe podium again."
Sergio Canamasas: "I started from the back ofthe grid today but felt good at the start of the race. I was up to20th when I had to take a drive-through penalty becauseof an on track incident. I pushed hard but there was no way I couldgain any ground after the penalty.
"I look forward to the sprint race tomorrow and will make everyeffort to get a result for me and the team."

Car #15 Alexander Rossi - P20
Sakhir Circuit Length:  5.412 km
Total Distance - Race 2: 124.230 km
Tyre use: P Zero Orange hard
The GP2 sprint race in Bahrain started at 1050 local time anddid not disappoint, providing a constant stream of overtaking andwheel to wheel racing for the crowd.
Alexander made a good start from the third row of the gridfollowing his podium in the Saturday feature race but it was threeabreast into the first corner and a tap to the rear turned himaround forcing oncoming traffic to make contact with his frontwing. He made it back to the pits where a new nose was fitted andthe suspension was checked. Rejoining the race in last place he putin some stunning lap times, catching and overtaking two cars at theback of the pack and finishing 20th.
Canamasas made a flying start from 20th on the grid, enabling him to run a consistent 14th for the early partof the race. With ten laps to go he had great pace and with histyres in good shape he pushed hard and battled for a top tenfinish. He traded places with the cars around him several timesbefore taking the chequered flag an admirable 11th.
Team Principal Mia Sharizman "Overall I amhappy with the race weekend here in Bahrain and we have made manyimprovements and gains since the first race in Malaysia.  Itlooks like we have turned a corner and all credit to the boys fortheir great work this weekend.  It is never easy for theengineers or mechanics to have a new driver stepping into the carjust a few days before a race weekend but Alexander and James haveworked very well together.
"I am pleased for Sergio today and he has now seen thecapability of the car and the team, which will help build hisconfidence for the remainder of the season.
"We now move on from Bahrain in the knowledge that we have agood baseline for the car and we hope to repeat our good form inBarcelona. There is a long season ahead and now we have moved up inthe Championship standings we look onwards and upwards."
Team Manager Phill Spencer: "I am disappointedfor Alexander today but the team did a great job to get him backout on track after checking the car and changing the nose. After his stop he was consistently one of the fastest cars on trackand I feel confident that with better fortune we could have won therace.
"Sergio did a great job from 20th on the grid andbattled through the field showing great grit and determination.
"Both drivers were happy with the balance of the car and we nowlook forward to Barcelona."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett"We have mixed emotions following today's race and we findourselves thinking what could have been. Both drivers made verygood starts but when Alex got tagged at the first corner and had tochange his nose it was race over. After the pit stop he pushed hardand was flying, lapping quicker than the leaders and if it were notfor the incident he looked good for another podium.
"Sergio also had a blinding start and was dicing with peoplethroughout the race. He was happier with the car today and had hestarted higher up the grid I am confident he could have scored somepoints. He has learnt a lot today and proved that he is a realracer and is capable of carrying out clean overtaking manoeuvres. We leave Bahrain with points on the board and look forward toBarcelona."
Alexander Rossi "My start was very good, Imanaged to overtake the row in front of me. Into turn one I went tothe outside to brake on the racing line and was hit from behind. This put me sideways and another car drove over my front wing. Ihad to pit for a nose change, which pretty much put an end to myrace.
"I made the decision to treat the remainder of the race as atest with the main aim to understand how the tyres work in theseconditions, which turned out to be very positive. My tyredegradation was low and I was able to maintain a quick pacethroughout the 25 laps.
"Going to Barcelona I think we have a very good race car. We'llmake small improvements to our qualifying car and after thisweekend I have a better understanding of the tyres. There is noreason why we can't go for a win in Barcelona.
"My GP2 Championship debut has been very positive, the team havedone a fantastic job throughout and I would like to thank all ofthe guys for their hard work. "
Sergio Canamasas: "I am pretty happy followingthe race and it is just a pity that I did not quite make it intothe points as the car was quick and I felt good. I enjoyed theclose racing and plenty of overtaking during the race and I ampleased with the car and how it worked today. I was surprised thatthe tyres were so good at the end of the race which enabled me tocontinue to push.
"I leave Bahrain happy and I am looking forward to Barcelonawhich is my home race and with my friends, family and sponsorssupporting me I will deliver even more."

The first European GP2 session of 2013 got underway in Barcelonaat midday with the morning rain abating just in time for dryingtrack conditions which remained for qualifying.
The morning practice yielded useful information on long hardtyre runs as per the engineering programme, preparing the driversfor the race.
Both drivers feel they are out of position and expected to beslightly further up the grid following qualifying but they areupbeat about the race tomorrow and still have a chance to fight fora good points finish.
Team Manager Phill Spencer "After the first twoflyaway races it is great to be back in Europe at an event which welove and at a track where we had a great result with a win lastyear.  Barcelona also has the added bonus of being Sergio'shome race and he has a great deal of supporters at the track.
"The first day of practice and qualifying is now over andalthough we are not as high up the grid as we had hoped, the guysdid a solid job and we are optimistic that they can still have agood race tomorrow."
Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett "Qualifying wasnot quite as we expected - I thought we had a fair chance ofgetting both cars into the top ten after testing.
"In Sergio's case he was reasonably happy with the balance ofthe car and with Alexander he had a perfectly balanced car on hisfirst run and made no changes, but on the second run he picked up alot of understeer which we will look into tonight.
"Whether we sent both drivers out  too early for theirsecond run is a consideration as the track may have rubbered inlater in the session, however some people set their fastest timeson the first run so it is hard to say.
"I am disappointed but we will push as always tomorrow."
Alexander Rossi "The track was still dampduring practice this morning which made predicting the setup forqualifying a little difficult. The sun came out for qualifying andwe tried something a little bit tricky with the strategy, which Idon't think was the wrong decision, but we missed the balance onthe car a bit and I am obviously disappointed being 17th.
"This is not what anyone was expecting so in the race we havethe opportunity to be a bit creative with the strategy to try andmake it work and get into the top eight. "
Sergio Canamasas "I felt very comfortableduring qualifying and the car was superb but on my last flying lapthe performance of my tyres was gone and I lost one or two tenths.P13 is a good place to start and I will make progress in the race. The main thing for me is to finish both races in the points thisweekend. You win a championship by reliability, and I'm workingvery hard to change the dynamic of the season opener."

A disappointing Friday qualifying left both Caterham Racingdrivers with a lot of hard work to do in today's GP2 featurerace.
Alexander had a stunning opening lap, moving from seventeenth toeleventh and then pitted early for the hard tyre on lap sixwhich allowed him to gain an advantage over the cars around him. Hethen drove faultlessly, bringing the car home in an impressiveseventh place which gives him the added bonus of starting theSunday sprint race on the front row of the grid.
Sergio also made a good start and gained two places off the linebut was then squeezed onto the grass at turn two as the field viedfor position. He settled into 13th until Berthon droveover the back of his car, ripping the rear wing off and forcing himto pit and retire from his home race.
Team Manager Phill Spencer "Our first Europeanrace here in Barcelona was very mixed. We really feel for Sergiowho had to retire through no fault of his own due to the damageincurred when he was hit from behind. We can only hope he hasbetter luck tomorrow in front of his home crowd.
"Conversely we are very pleased for Alexander who finishedseventh having started from seventeenth on the grid. The guys did afantastic job, posting the fastest pit stop for the second race ina row which enabled Alexander to make up a few positions which hemaintained as he nursed his tyres to the end of the race. It isgreat to have another points scoring finish and we hope he can makea good start from the front row tomorrow."
Alexander Rossi "My start was decent, but mostimportantly I was happy with my first lap, picking up sixpositions.
"After qualifying we decided to be brave with the strategy, pitting as early as possible. This was a difficult call but we knewif we could gain enough in the first part of the race and managetyre wear, we could hang on at the end. The team did an amazing jobin my pitstop which helped me move forwards in the race and I had agreat car underneath me so I am really pleased that we were able torecover from a difficult qualifying.
"To be on the front row of the grid for the sprint race tomorrowis perfect. We know that in equal conditions our pace is just asgood as anyone else on track, so it should be a good race."
Sergio Canamasas "I made a good start but thenit all got a little bit messy and I was squeezed onto the grass atthe second corner, losing three or four positions. The race settleddown a bit but then I was hit from behind by Berthon and that wasthe end of my race as my rear wing was ripped off.
"I had good race pace, and avoided the startline incidents, so Ithink eighth was a reasonable target for me today. Now I will startfrom the back of the grid for the sprint race, which is alwayspainful, but even more when you are racing at home in front of yourfans and friends.
"There is nothing much to say but I need a little more luck forthe next few races as unfortunately for me this year I have not hadany luck. It has been a complicated start to the season but I willkeep pushing and work hard tomorrow and every day."
