AIRB wants to expand treated water business
KUALA LUMPUR: Aliran Ihsan Resources Bhd (AIRB), is in talks with four states in the Peninsula and several companies, to further build its presence in both the upstream and downstream sectors of the treated water business.
Its Chief Executive Officer, Anuar Kasim said he is confident the discussions can be concluded by year-end.
"Currently, we are in advanced discussions and everything is positive, given AIRB's experience," he said at a press conference, after the company's annual general meeting (AGM) here on Monday.
However, he declined to name the states concerned.
According to Anuar, AIRB plans to be involved in all facets of the water industry, both domestically and internationally.
AIRB, a subsidiary of MMC Corporation Bhd, is involved in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants as well as rehabilitation and the contruction of water works through its subsidiaries and associated companies.
AIRB's business in Johor at present, supplies about 70 per cent of the state's water.
Anuar said the expansion is expected to contribute significantly to the company's growth.
"One state, we are talking to now, is equivalent to the size of our current business. This business alone, would double our revenue," he explained.
Besides that, he said AIRB is also seriously considering entering the wastewater and water infrastructure sector.
"Our parent company, MMC, has the construction capability. By using MMC's strength and our expertise in handling water, we believe the access to tap the market would be efficient," he added.
Explaining further, he said MMC's subsidiary, Malakoff Corporation Bhd, has an independent power and water plant in Saudi Arabia.
"So, we are looking at synergising with Malakoff. AIRB is in talks with the company now to see the areas we could tap into," he stated.
However, going forward, Anuar said the company would focus on penetrating the local market, as there are many opportunities since the enactment of the Water Services Industry Act 2006.
He also stated that the industry was becoming more commercial with the increased involvement of the private sector.
AIRB's group revenue grew by 15.9 per cent to RM75.1 million due to an increase in the water bulk sales of the company's subsidiary, Southern Water Corporation Sdn Bhd.
Meanwhile, its profit after tax fell by 7.6 per cent to RM30.2 million compared to the previous annualised financial year, due to a lower performance by its subsidiaries and associated companies.
AIRB has also positive developments on the previous issues relating to outstanding trade receivables, which has improved the company's cash position. - BERNAMA |
