Korea And China Continue Their Domination
The final of the teams event at the KLRC World Junior Teams Event will be a repeat of last year's final and every final prior to that, with South Korea and China set to clash for the title at the Trusts Stadium, Auckland.
Korea had to work hard for their 3-1 victory over Singapore but it was plain sailing for the Chinese as they swept to a 3-0 win over Malaysia.
Malaysia, playing without the injured Arif Latif, were simply blown away in the mixed doubles, boy's singles and girl's singles.
In the opening match, Malaysia pinned their hopes on the mixed pairing of Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei, the top seeds in the individual event, but found China's Biao Chai-Li Xuerui too hot to handle.
The Chinese scratch pair showed more urgency and greater attacking fluidity to stop the Malaysians in straight games, 21-15, 21-9 in a mere 25 minutes.
Stunned by the set-back, the Malaysians were a dispirited lot and surrendered the tie, Vountus Indra Mawan and Lydia Cheah outclassed by their respective opponents.
Vountus, up against reigning Asian junior champion Chen Long, lost the plot and went down 21-8, 21-8. Lydia put up a struggle but the ultimate result was inevitable, falling to a 21-18, 21-10 defeat to Wang Lin.
Malaysia's coach Jeremy Gan admitted that China were the better team and Arif's unavailability caused some of the players to lose their confidence.
Arif injured his left groin in the quarter-final tie against Thailand on Friday.
At the adjacent court, Singapore came close to pulling off an upset when they held their own against the defending champions.
Despite losing the first match, Singapore levelled the tie when they took the girl's singles, Xing Aiying surviving a one hour encounter against Yoo Young Hyun, 16-21, 21-18, 21-15.
However, Park Sung Min put Korea back in front with a 21-19, 21-17 win over Ashton Chen while Yoo Young Hyun-Jung Eun Kyung helped the Koreans in the final with a 21-13, 21-15 win over Fu Mingtian-Yao Lei in the girl's doubles.
Korea junior team head coach Lee Deuk Choon was delighted with the opportunity to defend the title but predicted a close tie against China.
"Both teams are of equal strength but our chances are better in the doubles, and hopefully, that's where the points will come," said Lee.
will come up with a strategy to ensure this (win) happens."
In other play-offs, hosts New Zealand fell to a 3-0 defeat against Scotland but will fancy their chances against Bulgaria in the 11th-12th play-off on Sunday.
Indonesia and Japan also triumphed on Saturday and will now play each other in the 5th-6th play-off. Indonesia beat India 3-0 while Japan had a much tougher time against Thailand, prevailing to a 3-2 win. India and Thailand will play in the 7th-8th play-off.
