MAN-OF-THE-MATCH ROONEY HAPPY IN MIDFIELDManchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes he may play predominantly as a midfielder in the future, following his Man of the Match display in that position against AFC Bournemouth.
Rooney opened the scoring for United with his 100th Old Trafford goal in the Premier League, and helped create a further two goals as he led his team to a convincing 3-1 victory which secured a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League group stage. When asked about his role in the middle of the park, the skipper replied: "I think sometimes you have to make choices in your career, and at the minute it is probably better for me to play deeper. "Now obviously it is a bit different with England, still being a striker for England. But certainly after that [Euro 2016], for next season, that [midfield] is probably where I see myself playing,” Tuesday night's win ensured the Reds finished fifth in the Barclays Premier League table, and Wayne was impressed with the way his team-mates responded to the situation following Sunday’s abandoned match. “It was obviously a difficult game tonight in terms of what happened on Sunday, and we knew that fourth place was gone for us. We had to make sure that we went out tonight and that we didn’t let that affect us because we’ve got a big game coming up on Saturday [the FA Cup final], and we wanted to stay in good habits for that game on Saturday. “I think it was a good victory, quite comfortable. We wanted obviously to win the game, for our fans, the last game of the season here at Old Trafford, and to keep momentum going into the final.” Despite a strong win against AFC Bournemouth, United were unable to match the superior goal difference of local rivals Manchester City, and although disappointed to miss out on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season, Rooney’s concentration is firmly on next weekend’s FA Cup final. “Of course a club of this size, with this history, we want to be playing in the biggest competition. It is very disappointing not to make it, but we’ve got to pull ourselves together for the game on Saturday," he admitted. “Hopefully we can end the season on a high.”
