Spansion pays Travis County most of its back taxes
Flash memory chipmaker still owes $1.4 million on its real estate after making good on personal property bill.

Travis County officials said Friday that the county received most — but not all — of the back taxes owed by chipmaker Spansion Inc.
The payment of $7.4 million was wired late Thursday after county authorities posted tax seizure notices on Spansion's buildings in Southeast Austin warning workers not to remove any company equipment.
The seizure notices did not hamper the company's operations, but they served as a warning that the county was prepared to take harsher collection measures if Spansion didn't pay.
County workers removed the tax notices from Spansion's buildings Friday.
Elliott Beck, who heads the county attorney's tax collection office, said Spansion's payment represents considerable progress toward paying its total tax bill of $8.8 million.
The bill that was paid covered the 2008 taxes due on business personal property, which includes factory equipment.
Beck said his office will continue to talk with the company about how it will pay the remaining $1.4 million, which is for the taxes due on its Austin real estate holdings.
Spansion's unpaid tax bill remains the largest in the county.
The Sunnyvale, Calif., company, which employs about 1,200 people in Austin, is a major maker of NOR flash memory chips, which are used in cell phones, communications equipment and other products.
Spansion has been under considerable financial pressure for the past several months because of a long-running market glut that has been made worse by a global economic slump that has eroded demand for chips.
Spansion said in January that it was "exploring strategic alternatives" to merge or sell all or part of its business. Its Japanese chip manufacturing subsidiary filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday.
