T02 Barcelona - Day 1

Circuit de Catalunya, Spain - Tuesday 19th February 2013

Driver: Charles Pic, car #20
Chassis: CT03-06
Total laps: 49
Best lap: 1.27.534

Charles Pic: "49 laps on the first day of thesecond test isn't the total we wanted, but we've still been able tocomplete quite a bit of today's program and with every lap I'mgetting more and more comfortable in the car.

"In the morning session we ran through a similar program to thesecond day in Jerez last week, and we had planned more tyre work inthe afternoon. When I went out for a stint after the lunch break Ihad a mechanical problem going into Turn 3 and afterwe got the car back to the garage we found out it was a gearboxissue and that brought the day to an early end. We've alreadystarted work on the fix and I'm sure we'll be ready for tomorrowmorning when we can get back to work."

T02 Barcelona - Day 2
Circuit de Catalunya, Spain - Wednesday 20th February 2013

Driver: Charles Pic, car #20
Chassis: CT03-06
Total laps: 102
Best lap: 1.26.243

Charles Pic: "My second day in the car inBarcelona was a positive step from yesterday but we still have workto do to get the car's performance to where we want it to be byMelbourne. After losing some time on day one it was important toget as many kilometres done as possible and completing 102 lapsgives us a lot of data to work through and will help us progressover the next two days of this test, and to prepare for nextweek.

"There are definitely positives to take from my two days ontrack this week, and with every lap I'm getting more comfortable inthe car and with the whole team. There are a few areas for us tolook at to extract more performance, but this week hasn't beenabout times, it's been focused on working through various setupoptions and understanding the tyres which are going to be asimportant this year as they were in 2012. We will continue thatwork next week and I'm sure we'll make more progress there."

T02 Barcelona - Day 2
Circuit de Catalunya, Spain - Thursday 21st February 2013

Driver: Giedo van der Garde, car #21
Chassis: CT03-06
Total laps: 93
Best lap: 1.26.177

Giedo van der Garde: "We've had a prettyproductive day and completing 93 laps meant we were able to runthrough the whole plan we'd set out for today. We had a technicalissue in the afternoon which meant we were running without KERS forthe whole session after lunch, but despite that we were still ableto try a number of different set-ups that give us more to work ontomorrow and several options to work through at the next test.

"One area we are focusing on is improving the rear stability ofthe car. It definitely has a sharper front end than the 2012 carbut we need to take a more detailed look at that tonight and, assuming the rain stays away tomorrow, we can keep working on thaton day four of this test."

T02 Barcelona - Day 4
Circuit de Catalunya, Spain - Friday 22nd February 2013

Driver: Giedo van der Garde, car #21
Chassis: CT03-06
Total laps: 50
Best lap: 1.27.429

Giedo van der Garde: "Despite today's weatherit's been another relatively productive day. It's certainly beenone of the coldest days I've had on track, but even with the coldtrack temps and the rain that stopped and started we were able toget through quite a bit of work.

"The cold weather meant it might not have been much fun for thefans in the stands, but it was useful to get some laps done on theintermediate tyres as it was my first time in an F1 car in the wet,and to experience the car in the wet/dry conditions we hadtoday.
We also tried a couple more ideas to help improve the rearstability but, again, as the tyres weren't really coming up totemperature we weren't able to push too hard today.

"Even with the weather today, it's been a fairly good test forus. We're steadily working through the plan, making sure we'recovering everything we need to and now we have a lot of informationto help us prepare for the final test back here in Barcelona nextweek."

F1卡特汉姆车队宣布亚历山大•罗西和马青骅成为车队预备车手
  • Added: Fri 1 Mar, 2013

Alexander Rossi and Ma Qing Hua to be                                                    Reserve Drivers

Alexander Rossi and Ma Qing Hua have today been confirmed asCaterham F1 Team's Reserve Drivers, joining Race Drivers CharlesPic and Giedo van der Garde in the team's line-up.

Rossi comes with a large amount of experience and success injunior formula. He will continue the development he has made withCaterham F1 Team since first driving for the team at the 2011 AbuDhabi Young Driver test, and building on the Test Driver role hefulfilled in 2012, which included his F1 debut in the Spanish GrandPrix FP1 session.

As part of his 2013 Reserve Driver role, Rossi will be takingpart in a number of FP1 sessions throughout the season, furtheradding to the experience he has gained with the team since2011.

In addition, Ma will be racing throughoutthe forthcoming season with Caterham Racing in the GP2 Series, giving him the opportunity to compete against some of the bestyoung talent in motorsport while being fully integrated into the F1environment.

Ma already has FP1 experience on his CV, having driven in fourFriday practice sessions in 2012. He first competed in motorsportin 2005, in the Asian Formula Renault Challenge, and in ItalianF3000. "As Reserve Drivers, both Alexander and Ma will attend everyrace with us and will be driving in a number of FP1 sessions tocontinue their development. "The program we have devised for Alexander and Ma will allowthem to immerse themselves completely in the F1 environmentthroughout 2013, preparing them for the day when they take the nextstep up to the ultimate level."

My goal for theFriday practice sessions that I will drive this season is tofulfill the team's runplan for each session, work closely witheveryone and learn as much as possible, always being ready for thenext opportunity. As Caterham F1 Team's Reserve Driver I willattend all F1 events, allowing me to integrate fully within theteam technically, commercially and from a sporting perspective inF1, best preparing me for the next step.

"I want to thank Caterham shareholders Tony and Kamarudin fortheir complete support and Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul for thetrust he has placed in me to carry out these duties. I plan to makethe most of this season and the opportunities afforded to me soI'll be best prepared for what comes next."

Ma Qing Hua: "I am very excited about joiningthe Caterham family and would like to thank everyone at Caterham F1Team and Caterham Racing for giving me the chance to race in GP2and to extend my F1 experience.

"Both teams have everything they need to keep growing in theright direction and I am looking forward to playing an importantrole in helping them achieve what they've set out to do this year.I know the fans at home will be really excited to see me race inGP2 and with the F1 work I also have ahead of me, China can beproud that it continues to have a driver involved in motor racingat the very highest level."

Despite that wewent out early for an installation lap and ran through more setupwork on the wet and intermediate tyres in the morning session.

"The weather cleared up a bit in the afternoon but we had atechnical issue that cut into our runplan so we switched from thefull race simulation we were going to run to more setup work andtyre evaluation. Unfortunately the rain came back again with halfan hour to go, which again meant we had to change the plan but theforecast for the last couple of days is better so hopefully we canget back to the original runplan and finish the tests as we'dplanned."

Team Quotes

Charles Pic, car #20: "I'm looking forward toreturning to Melbourne, this time for my first race with CaterhamF1 Team and I think it's going to be a good weekend.

"Melbourne itself is a very nice city. It's good to go from theend of the cold European winter to the hotter weather of Australiaand even though the hours you spend flying mean you arrive feelinga bit destroyed, it's the same for everyone and I'm feeling goodphysically and mentally so it won't be an issue.

"The circuit itself is very cool. It's quick but as it's atemporary street circuit the cars run with high downforce and it'sa good challenge to get a really clean lap in. FP1 is always quietas the track is very green for the early part of the session, butit evolves a lot over the weekend and you need to time yourqualifying lap right to make the most of the rubber that's beinglaid down.

"After the tests we're definitely ready to start racing. We havea good idea of where we're going to start out and I think we have avery interesting season ahead of us. Whatever happens, I'm enjoyingmyself in Caterham and it's great to be part of a team that hassuch an exciting future ahead."

Giedo van der Garde, car #21: "Honestly I can'twait to get started. Melbourne will be my first Grand Prix startand, even though it's taken a while to reach this point, I'mcompletely prepared and really looking forward to getting back toracing.

"Having spent a lot of time with the team last year nothing wasnew to me when I moved up to the Race Driver position, but it'sstill a different world, being a Race Driver rather than a Reserve, but I'm enjoying every minute. I finished off 2012 with a win inSingapore, and, while we're all realistic enough to know we're notgoing to be fighting at that end of the grid, I also know I want tobe in the right position to take advantage of anything that comesmy way when the lights go out.

"Over the season, I know Spa is going to be a great race as it'sso close to home, but for me the most exciting moment of 2013 willbe when the lights go out in Melbourne and everything I've dreamedof for so long comes true. I've worked hard all winter and in thetests to prepare myself and I'm ready, physically and mentally.

"Before it all gets serious in Australia I also want to takethis chance to thank everyone who has helped me reach this stage ofmy career. McGregor have played a big role in helping me become andF1 driver, so thanks to everyone there, and thank you to all thepeople at Leafield. Caterham F1 Team is a family, a very cool groupof people who have a long-term plan that will come true, and if Ican help the whole team achieve its goals then that would be a goodway of saying thanks."

Cyril Abiteboul, Team Principal: "Australiawill be a proud moment for the whole team. 2013 is our fourth yearin F1, the first with our new livery and the first season startsince we moved into Leafield.

"On the surface it may look like we're starting 2013 in asimilar position to 2012, but inside the team it is very different. We have a base in Oxfordshire in which we now control all elementsof the design and production in-house. The wind tunnel we use hasbeen upgraded to meet our exact specifications and is now producingresults that turn into definite improvements. We are continuing toimprove the efficiencies and working practices within the team sowe can compete both on track and as a viable business with a securelong-term future and we are bringing in talented people at alllevels to keep pushing us forwards.

"We also have two new drivers for 2013, Charles Pic and Giedovan der Garde. Both are young, determined to succeed and eager tohelp the team achieve its goals. At the end of 2012 we were acentral part of the F1 show, and I have told both drivers to beready to be part of the show in 2013, maybe not right at the start, but with what we have coming to the car during the season, we canbe confident that we are going to attract interest in us, for theright reasons.

"We have the facilities, we have the people and we have theinfrastructure we need to take the next step forwards. We will dothat in a calm, measured way, one that is grounded in a realisticview of the highly competitive world in which we operate, but wewill do it with the greatest possible level of energy, passion andenthusiasm. It feels like the 2012 season finished only yesterday, but we cannot wait to start racing again!"

Driver quotes

Charles Pic: "For our first full day of runningthat was ok. We definitely have work to do to get where we want tobe and we knew where we'd be relative to the cars around us for theearly part of the season, so there's been no real surprisestoday.

"In FP1 we ran through a pretty normal program on the mediumtyres but we have some work to do to extract the maximumperformance from them so we'll look at that tonight and do morework on that in FP3. In FP2 we did a couple of longer runs on thatcompound before switching to the supersofts and found that deglevels on those was good, especially on the long runs, and thetimes were consistent. Now we need to make sure we can get the sameperformance level out of the mediums as we did on the supersoftsand that will set us up ok for Sunday."

Giedo van der Garde: "First I want to say howgood it was to start my first full F1 weekend. I've worked veryhard for a long time to get here and a lot of people have helpedmake my dream come true, so I want to thank them for helping makeit happen.

"On track FP1 was good - we got through a decent number of lapsand focused mainly on tyre evaluation, running on the mediums forthe whole session so we could have a detailed look at degradationlevels on that compound. FP2 started ok - on the first run I hadsome understeer that we dialled out for the second run butunfortunately I have a bit of rear locking as I went into T3 andwent into the gravel. The anti-stall kicked in before I could getthe car back out and that was the end of my afternoon.

"Despite that we have a lot of data to work through tonight andwe'll come back fighting tomorrow. We'll have to make the most ofFP3 but I'm looking forward to it and it's all part of the learningprocess for me."

Driver quotes

Charles Pic: "Sometimes qualifying goes like it didtoday. We obviously didn't finish where we wanted to but for muchof the session we looked pretty good, especially halfway throughthe session when we were putting in pretty good times.

"We made the call to switch to inters with about five minutesleft of the session and for the first lap it was very tricky -there was a lot of standing water and it was hard to keep the caron track, but it improved pretty quickly and I was starting to pushbefore I touched the white line which caused me to spin and I madecontact with the barrier which meant I had to pit. Until that pointI was much faster but didn't have the luck you sometimes need.

"Our pace was good in the conditions today, similar to a numberof cars ahead, but it's obviously important to finish our fastestlaps - today we didn't do that but that speed gives us reason to bepositive."

Giedo van der Garde: "Honestly I'm disappointedwith where we ended up today as we could definitely have finishedhigher. We made quite a few changes to the car overnight and itfelt much better in FP3 so I was feeling good about qualifying.

"The delays at the start of quali obviously weren't ideal but Iwas very calm and looking forward to getting out there. It wasobviously the same conditions for everybody and it was very trickyout there - I hit a puddle on my first run and span off which meantI had to pit for a new nose, but the boys did a good job to get meout again quickly and we were looking good.

"With a few minutes left in Q1 we switched to inters and the carfelt great. On my last run I was well up but I had to back off fordouble yellow flags and that was the end of my chance. It's a shameas I know we'd have finished higher, but sometimes it's likethat.

"Now we have some more work to do to prepare for the race.Starting where we are we just have to make sure we can avoid anyproblems at the start and concentrate on getting to the end of whatwill be my first Grand Prix. If it's raining again at least we knowwhat the track's going to be like so I'm looking forward toit."

                                                Team Quotes

Charles Pic, car 20, chassis CT03-#6: “That wasn’t too bad a race for us. Of course we’d prefer to finish higher but I think that at this stage of the season this reflects our current performance levels.

“We started on the supersofts and our pace was ok for the first stint but the tyres dropped off very quickly. In contrast, when we went onto the mediums the degradation levels were very good so we were able to push the second stint much longer than we’d planned and that gave us a chance to fight. Unfortunately towards the end of the race we had a KERS failure which obviously cut our outright pace and prevented us from taking full advantage of the good tyre wear we saw on the primes.

“We know that it’s going to be similar to this for the first few races, but with what we have coming it’s going to be a really interesting season. We have quite a few small details we need to work on for the next race but it’s good to have a real fight on our hands, good for the team and the fans so let’s see how this progresses.”

Giedo van der Garde, car 21, chassis CT01-#5: “For me that was a reasonable start to my F1 career. It was really important to finish my first race and that’s exactly what I did so I’m pretty happy with how it ended up.

“I started the race on the supersofts, passed a few people in the first turn and was keeping up with Bianchi until the first pitstop, even with the deg levels on the option tyres. Unfortunately I had a slow puncture on the first set of mediums and that cost me time and position. We had to stop much earlier than planned to put a new set of mediums on and that meant a change to the strategy, but it’s all good experience for me.

“I’ve said all through pre-season that the first races are a chance for me to learn and today was really good for that. I feel good physically and now we have a lot more information about tyre wear and how to manage that so we’ll take that to next week’s race Malaysia and see what we can do at our first home race of the season.”

Driver Quotes

Charles Pic: "Malaysia will be the firstCaterham F1 Team home race for me and I'm looking forward to whatwill be a very busy week, but one where I think we'll see a lot ofsupport and a Grand Prix that really pushes the physicalpreparations we've done over the winter.

"We have quite a few events that we're doing in the build-up to therace itself and it'll be great to meet the Malaysian fans, but oncewe're in the car it's back to work in one of the toughestchallenges we have all year. The heat and the humidity make driving56 laps on Sunday pretty difficult.

"Whatever happens on Sunday it's going to be a really good week.Tony's invited us to check out a basketball game in Kuala Lumpurand we're going to be at the Pavilion Shopping Centre on Wednesdayafternoon to meet the fans, as well as going to see GE's offices inKL, so we're going to meet a lot of people who support us andthat's a great feeling for me and the whole team."

Giedo van der Garde: "After Sunday I went straightto Malaysia as it's important to start adjusting to the heat. Iraced in GP2 there last year but F1 is a big step up in terms ofthe physical and mental preparations you need to make so my trainerCarlos and I have a busy program planned to make sure I'm ready forevery session in the car. Hydration is particularly important inthat preparation and I'll be building up the amount of liquids Itake on board throughout the week to around six litres on race day,as well as spending as much time as possible outside and away fromair-con so I can acclimatise quickly.

"On track, Sepang gives us an interesting challenge. We haven'tseen track temperatures in pre-season or in Australia close to whatwe'll have this week and as the circuit evolves quite a bit overthe weekend managing degradation levels from Friday through toSunday will be critical, but we saw in Australia that our carperformed well on the primes so we'll look to build on that thisweekend.

"The cars run pretty high downforce levels at Sepang and thathelps throughout the lap, but one of the key areas we'll work on inthe practice sessions will be maximising our pace in the reallyquick corners. Something the engineers have told me is that sincethe team came into the sport in 2010 their cars have alwaysperformed better in hot temperatures, Tony has said before it'sbecause the team has a Malaysian heart, so let's see if thatcontinues this year!

"We also have a really busy week away from the circuit in Sepangand I have to say I can't wait. Last year we had a fantasticreception from the Malaysian fans and I think this year it's goingto be a great feeling to race in Tony and Kamarudin's  home. Ihave a special surprise planned just for this race, a new crashhelmet design that we've worked on that I think the Malaysian fanswill love. We'll unveil the design during the week and I'm excitedto see people's reaction to it - our crash helmet designs are oneof the best ways drivers have to express something cool and it's achance for me to show what it means to me to take part in our homerace. I can't wait to get started - it's going to be a greatweek!"

Charles Pic: “Friday has been ok for us and it’s mostly been looking at tyre degradation and balance. There was a little too much understeer in the first session this morning so we tried a couple of setup changes and they seemed to work. In the afternoon we had to change the plan a bit when the rain started but that gave us a chance to run seven laps on the intermediate tyres which could be important for Saturday and Sunday. We also had our first runs on the medium tyres here and wear rates were ok on those. I had a small mistake on my quickest lap on the performance run and that cost me quite a bit of time so I think there’s more to come tomorrow, especially in qualifying.

“We’ve also been working on improvements in the garage between runs, cutting down the turnaround times, and that’s working well. Overall it’s been a good week in Malaysia so far for me. It’s been busy but I’m enjoying it – we’ve had a great welcome wherever we go and I’m sure that’ll continue all weekend.”

Giedo van der Garde: “I think we’ve had a pretty good day. We’ve completed a lot of laps on all the tyres except the full wets and run through the whole program. In FP1 it was the normal runplan, focusing on the hard prime tyres and starting to understand deg levels on those – our pace on that compound and the wear rates were both encouraging, but we’ll have to work a bit more on getting them up to temperature efficiently and then keeping them in that first phase of degradation as long as possible.

“In FP2 we did a couple of short and long runs on the primes and one on the medium tyre, as well as a stint on the inters when the rain started. It wasn’t the intense rain we had on track yesterday but it was still enough to mean we needed to run the inters and with rain possible in quali and in the race that’s more good data for us. It’s also good for me to get as many laps as possible done on the intermediates – it’s all part of the learning process and with full running in both FP1 and FP2 today, compared to Melbourne, we’re in a better position for tomorrow and Sunday than we were last weekend.”

                                                Driver quotes

Charles Pic: “We had a very good FP3, really making progress, especially on the long runs, but I don’t think there was a lot more we could have done today in qualifying. I had a lot of understeer on my first run so we adjusted the pressures for the second run but I still couldn’t dial out the understeer so with the performance gap to the cars ahead we probably finished up about as well as we could have hoped.

“So now we focus on tomorrow. In FP3 we found a good direction to go in the race so I think it’s going to be interesting. It’ll almost certainly rain and I like it when the conditions are changing on track so let’s see what happens.”

Giedo van der Garde: “Qualifying didn’t go well for me today to be honest. I’ve had an issue with a lot of oversteer on the option tyres all day and really couldn’t get them to work as well as they did at the last race and that obviously hurt my pace. It’s odd as the car felt good on the hard compounds in FP3 today but I just couldn’t get the mediums to work so we’ll have to look at that again tonight.

“However, with the car performing well on the primes and the pace we have on the inters I think tomorrow could be interesting. It’s rained every day at about the same time as it’ll be halfway through the race tomorrow so strategy’s going to be really important. Physically I feel really good, totally prepared for the race, so we’ll look at the plans for the race and hopefully pick up where we left off in FP3.”

Team Quotes

Charles Pic, car 20, chassis CT03-#6: “Off the line I had a great start and was up with Giedo for the first few laps while the track was wet enough for the inters. The team called me in to change onto the medium tyres for the first stint in the dry but as I was coming in to the box I saw Vergne being released right in front of me and I couldn’t avoid him as I was turning in and there was nothing I could do to avoid their mistake. The guys did a brilliant job to change the nose and the tyres and I was out again after losing about 25 seconds – that’s the sort of thing the pitcrew train for and it paid off in that first stop.

“It’s such a shame that incident happened as we could definitely have finished better if it hadn’t happened. It may have cost us a place and while that’s frustrating it’s also positive to see how well everyone reacted and to see that we didn’t stop pushing, on the pitwall or in the garage. We stopped another three times after that, going onto the hard compounds for two stints and the mediums for the last thirteen laps and the car felt pretty good throughout the whole race. I was able to push right to the flag and without the pitlane issue I’m sure the final result would look different.”

Giedo van der Garde, car 21, chassis CT03-#5: “I had a really good start, really strong and the car felt great on the inters for the first stint. Just when the conditions were going from wet to dry I heard over the radio that I had a front left puncture but it was exactly at the time we were coming in to switch to the dry tyres so it only cost me a little bit of time. I came back out on the mediums and was running well in 17th with really good balance.

“From there the race was ok. The rain that had been forecast didn’t come so we didn’t have another chance to show what we can do on the inters and that’s a shame as I’m definitely quick on those tyres, but the car felt much better on both the medium and the hard compounds we put on in the second and third stops than it had yesterday. I didn’t have the same oversteer problems I had in FP3 or qualifying but we still have work to do to reduce oversteer on entry into the corners and we’ll look at that again in China. We’re also going to work on improving our setup options for qualifying, maximising every run in the practice sessions to help us get the most out of the car on Saturday afternoons and that will definitely help us put in a stronger showing in quali.

“I also want to say what a good job the boys did in the stops. It was pretty tight with Chilton each time but I stayed ahead of him after good work on the pitwall and really strong work from the pitcrew. When we finished I thanked them on the radio, and after the race Tony Fernandes told the whole team how proud he was of the work he’d seen today in the stops. He’s right – the boys are pushing hard and it’s good to see the efforts we’re making in the car are the same across the whole team.”

Cyril Abiteboul, Team Principal: “Having both cars finish the first two races, including our home race in Malaysia, is a fair reward for the efforts the whole team has put in, considering where we are performance-wise at this stage of the season. Both drivers again had very good starts and they were running well for the first part of the race. The incident Charles was an innocent victim of in his first stop was a real shame as that seriously hit his chances of fighting against Bianchi, but the team reacted very well and I’m proud of the efforts everyone has put in here and in Melbourne, in races that we knew would be tough.

“Although the general reliability of the cars has been better than a number of bigger teams ahead, we’re still having to deal with a number of pretty intense situations that are affecting our ability to control the finer details of our races. This time we had issues with our intercom failing, which prevents communication between engineers, our telemetry froze at certain points and the timing software went down which meant we weren’t able to accurately map how the race was unfolding. These things go on behind the scenes and while they don’t directly affect the performance of the cars they don’t help, so we’ll make sure we have fixes for each of those in China.

“Overall, with the strategy we’ve employed for 2013 and in preparation for 2014 and beyond we knew the first few races of this season would be tough, but we’re not going to deviate from the plan. Even though we’re running a hybrid car for the first three races we’re still close to where we want to be and the updates we have coming will pay dividends. We have a long-term goal, one that is built around the whole group we are part of and one that is realistic, sustainable and which will see us right in the mix in the long run.”
