                                Team Quotes

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: “For me I’m pleased with what I got out of the car today. On my second run I was following Hulkenberg on the out lap and wasn’t quite able to get my tyre temperatures up to the optimum level so in the first sector on the quick lap I had a little bit of understeer, but the other two sectors were about as good as they could have been. The car’s pace on Sundays has been pretty good all year so the aim now is to have a strong race and be in the right place to take advantage of anything that happens ahead. Really, for me, I’m not worried about the cars behind me. The team is doing everything they can to keep progressing and I want to do whatever I can to help them. Laps like today, while not as quick as we’d like to be, are what I can do – not make mistakes, get everything out of the car and help push the team forwards in the right direction.”

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: “In FP3 we found that the car wasn’t working as well as it had yesterday in FP2 when it had felt pretty good. When we went through the data we found that the tyre temperatures weren’t coming up as well as we’d have liked and we made a couple of changes for qualifying that immediately improved the setup. On my first run the car felt much better and on my second run I was at least 7/10ths up on my previous quickest lap, but I made a mistake in turn 14 and that cost me a lot of time. Despite that I’m not disappointed with where I finished. Heikki’s lap shows that we have a gap of around 6/10ths to the cars behind and while they’re doing a good job in trying to catch up with us we’re also working as hard as we can to pull away from them and try and fight with the cars ahead. Tomorrow’s race gives us a chance to do that, and with good strategy and careful use of the tyres I think we can have a decent Sunday.”

Team Quotes

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: "Ihad a fantastic start, avoided all the problems in turn one andpassed Glock as soon as the safety car came out. I was runningreally well in 11th until the first set of stops andin that first stint the car felt great. I was keeping the packbehind me and tyre wear on the softs was good. We went onto thehard tyres for the second stint and, again, wear rates wereexcellent. We were even thinking about doing a one stop race buttowards the end of the stint they started to go off so we came inwith ten laps left and from there it was all about making sure wegot to the flag without any problems."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: "At thestart I had to avoid the problems in front but got through that okand pretty quickly settled into a good rhythm. My first stop wasfine but after that we lost KERS and that obviously cost me time. Ialso had a problem with the radio and couldn't hear the blue flagcalls and that ended up with the drive-through penalty. From whereI started on the grid and with the KERS issue I think I probablygot as much as I could out of the car today. It's been a bit oftough weekend but it's good to see the team working so hard to keeppushing us forwards and next week in Korea we have another chanceto keep fighting."

General
Race Laps: 55
Straight line speed is important
Track is very dusty with low grip in FP1 which increases fronttyre graining
The pit lane is also very slippery
Track grip evolution starts from the first minutes of FP1
The front right tyre is often suffers most wear overall
The circuit is also hard on the rear tyres, particularly throughT10-T17
Bumpy through the high speed section T7-T8
Riding the kerbs riding is not a priority
There are three high power braking events but in general thecircuit has low brake cooling demands
Wind direction has a significant effect on top speed

Driver Quotes

Giedo van der Garde (driving FP1 in Vitaly Petrov'scar): "I'm looking forward to my second FP1 in a row inKorea after driving the first Friday in Suzuka. The Korean track isanother new circuit for me so I've spent quite a lot of time athome on my own simulator to get used to the layout but you neverreally know what it's like until you actually get on track.

"It looks like it's a pretty technical circuit and one that willtake a few laps to find all the right braking points and apexes, especially as a couple of the corners are blind, but it'll be fine. The plan for Korea is the same as Suzuka - run through the program, minimise the mistakes and get the job done for the team."

A lap of Korea with Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassisCT01-#03: "The start / finish straight is pretty short andthen it's into the second gear turn one. It's very tight and youneed a good exit to make sure you go onto the first long straightwith as much speed as possible, using KERS to really push you outof the corner and towards T2. Braking into turn 3 is prettystraightforward - it's another second gear corner and you want tocome out of there with as much speed as possible so you're usinganother big chunk of KERS and DRS to power your way out.

"Turn four is almost 180° so it's down to second or even firstgear, depending on the balance of the car. If you have a reallystrong front end you may be able to get through in second, otherwise you need first. Turns five and six are a bit fiddly, still in second, but then the speed builds as you go uphill throughturn seven and you stay flat out through eight. It's a really quicksection of the track, you lift a little in nine, carrying as muchspeed as possible as you very quickly arrive in the braking zonefor turn ten.

"For turn ten you go quickly down through the gears to first andit's not so important to get on the power early, it's more aboutcarrying speed through the middle and exit of the corner and thenit's on to turn 11, a double apex left which you go into in fourthand then flick down to third as you head towards turn 12.

"12, 13 and 14 are a sequence of right / left / right corners, all medium speed, third or fourth gear and you need to make sureyou have the right line out of them for turn 15. 15 and 16 arealmost one corner but you have to avoid a pretty heavy kerb in 16so you can get on the power and stay on it through 17 and 18 andback on to the start line."

Thoughts on Korea from Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassisCT01-#02: "I like Korea. The first time it was on thecalendar was in my first year in F1 and when I got there I wasreally surprised to see so many Russian flags in the stands. It wasthe same in 2011 and I'm sure it'll be like that again in 2012 andit's always good to race in front of so many fans from home.

"The track itself was a pretty tricky one to learn when I firstwent out on it in 2010. There's a few blind apexes and correct gearselection is really important to get the quickest laptimes, but nowwe've done a couple of races there we know what direction we needto take on setup so we can get on with it as soon as we arrive.

"In the race itself there's a strong chance of safety carsduring the race, both races so far have seen safety cars, so weneed to be prepared for that. We know we don't yet have the pace toreally fight with the cars ahead but we need to be ready to takeadvantage of whatever happens in front of us, and perhaps this isthe sort of race where we can do that."

Team Quotes

Giedo van der Garde (in Vitaly Petrov's car for FP1):"Another very useful session for me and the more time I spend inthe car the more confident I'm getting. This morning we wererunning a similar program to Heikki and apart from some issues withthe front tyres graining early on I think we made some goodprogress on another track that's new to me. After the first fullrun we made a few mechanical and aero changes and the carimmediately felt much better, giving me more confidence to push abit harder, but I'm still learning and I want to do what the teamasks me, not try and put in the quickest laptimes I can. Next up isFP1 in India and I'm already looking forward to making moreprogress there."

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3:"FP1 was a good session for me. The car felt wellbalanced right from the start and it kept improving throughout. Thetrack was obviously very slippery to begin with but the grip levelsimproved pretty quickly and the small changes we made for each runwere working well.

"In FP2 I went off track in my first run and that dislodged acouple of bolts in the cockpit that meant we had to make atemporary fix to the seat so we could get through the program.Until that point the balance didn't feel quite as good as it had inthe morning but once we went out on the supersofts the balance wasback to where I'd like. We also improved the braking throughout thesession so overall this has been a good day."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: "FP2didn't start as we'd have liked as I could almost immediately feellike we had a right rear puncture. We cut run one short and when Igot back in the garage we found we did have a puncture so wechanged the session plan to avoid using up another set of the softtyres. On my first run on the supersofts the balance wasn't quitethere so we made a couple of mechanical changes and they definitelyimproved the handling on the long run. The deg level on thesupersofts is pretty high and with the need to look after the tyreswe obviously had to change the program and my times would havedefinitely come down with more time on track and with the chance torun more laps on both compounds. Despite that both Heikki and Giedohave put in a good number of laps on the soft tyres so we have alot of data to work through, enough to put us in a decent positionfor tomorrow."

Team Quotes

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3:"I've struggled all weekend to find a setup I'm happy with and thatcontinued today in qualifying. We went for three runs, one on thesofts and two one lap runs on the supersofts to help try and find abalance but it just wasn't there today. On my last lap in Q1 Istill had understeer in the last four corners - perhaps withoutthat I'd have been able to find a bit more time, but it just wasn'tthere. Tyre strategy tomorrow will be key. We saw last weekend inJapan that we can fight in the early stages of the race so let'ssee if we can turn this weekend around in the race."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: "I'mreally happy with the performance today. I've had a couple ofproblems on the car that has cost me track time this weekend butthe team have worked really hard to keep us moving so thanks tothem for helping me get the most out of it in all three practicesessions and in quali today.

"My last lap was really good, probably as quick as we could goaround here. We timed it right so traffic wasn't an issue and tofinish over a second clear of the cars behind is good for the wholeteam. We haven't stopped pushing and the aim now is to have a cleanstart tomorrow and try and carry over this sort of performance intoSunday's race."

Team Quotes

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3:"That was a pretty straightforward race that for us was really allabout making sure both cars finished clear of the teams behind uswithout any problems. I had another good start and was ahead of myteammate through turn one after starting on the supersofts. Theystarted to go off relatively quickly, particularly the right front, which we knew would probably be likely in the race so for bothstops we opted for the softs and they held up well for most of theafternoon. To be honest it was a pretty quiet race for me. We wereeasily able to stay ahead of the teams behind, we didn't have anyproblems with the car and we probably got as much as we could outof the car today."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: "For methat was a good afternoon, probably the best result I could havehad today. The car was working well throughout the race and I had agood battle with Heikki right from the flag. Today was really allabout managing the gap to the Marussias, getting through the firstcorner without any problems and from there making sure I lookedafter the tyres. In the first stint that was pretty hard as theoptions I started on were graining quite early on, but both sets ofprimes I used in the second and third stints worked well and I wasable to take it to the flag without any problems."

It's another new track for me but one that looks cool on mysimulator, and the other drivers have told me it's better thanquite a few of the stop / start type of tracks so I'm lookingforward to getting back out on track.

"I'm also really looking forward to going to India. I've never beenbefore and I've always wanted to go to India, plus I'm a big fan ofspicy food so it'll be a chance to have a completely newexperience, on and off track."

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#03: "It'sour second time racing in India and I'm excited about getting backthere. Last year I think we were all impressed with what they didwith the circuit - the layout was really good, an interesting mixof elevation changes and different types of corners, not what we'veseen at a lot of the newer circuits so one I think we allenjoyed.

"Performance-wise I think we're all realistic about what we can doin India, but that doesn't mean we're not working as hard as we canto keep progressing. The guys behind us are putting up a good fightand, while we have clear air between us on track, we need to makesure we keep that gap, and, where possible, take advantage ofanything that happens ahead."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#02: "TheIndian track is one of the good ones. It's pretty smooth, nice andwide, so you can take different lines into some of the corners, andit has a couple of really good corners like the double left turnsfive and six which you come into quickly, and then braking for thechicane through seven, eight and nine. The track surface itself ispretty similar to Korea. It will evolve a lot over the weekend andyou'll see times coming down as the grip levels improve but, aswith the whole year, managing the tyres is going to be reallyimportant.

"In Korea we didn't have as much track time in the practicesessions as we'd have liked, so one of the main objectives will bemaking sure we get as many laps done as possible so we go intoSunday knowing as much as we can about the tyre behaviour over arace distance."

Van der Garde & Rossi for Young Driver                                                    Test

Reserve and Test Drivers Giedo van der Garde and Alexander Rossiwill drive at the forthcoming Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, taking place at the Yas Marina Circuit from 6th - 8th November.

Reserve Driver, 27-year-old van der Garde, will be in the carfor days one and two of the test, with 21-year-old Test DriverRossi taking over for day three.

Cyril Abiteboul, Caterham F1 Team CEO: "We aredelighted to be running both Giedo, our Reserve Driver, andAlexander, our Test Driver, at the Abu Dhabi Young Driver Test inNovember. With all the drivers we work with, we want to make surethey can see that we can help guide them along a clear path to thetop of the motorsport industry. On top of the FP1 sessions bothdrivers have already run for us, giving both Giedo and Alexanderthe chance to also test with us in Abu Dhabi is a good example ofour ongoing commitment to helping talented drivers achieve theirlong-term goals.

"Giedo has had a very strong year with our GP2 team CaterhamRacing, winning twice, in Spain and at the season finale inSingapore, and recording two podium finishes at the showpiece eventin Monaco. Alexander has had a decent season with Arden Caterham inFormula Renault 3.5, one of his highlights also coming in Monacowhere he finished fifth. Picking Giedo and Alexander for the AbuDhabi test is a good reward for their hard work in 2012, but italso gives us two drivers who know the team, understand how to getwhat's needed from the cars and are familiar with the circuit - thebest of all worlds for us in what will be an important test."

Giedo van der Garde: "By the time we get to theYoung Driver Test, I will have completed several FP1 sessions withthe team and it will be good to be able to extend that more withtwo full days in the car. I'm sure it will be a very busy couple ofdays but I want to make sure I continue to learn as much aspossible and do what I can to help the team have a useful few daystesting before the last two races of the season.

"I believe I have benefited enormously from the work I have beendoing with Caterham this year, in both GP2 and with the F1 team, and the chance to drive in Abu Dhabi is another positive step inthe right direction for my career as a professional racingdriver."

Alexander Rossi: "I want to thank Caterham F1Team for the opportunity once again to take part in the YoungDriver Test in Abu Dhabi. I've had a good year with the team asTest Driver and, on top of the FP1 I did in Spain, this is anotherchance to add more F1 experience at a track I know well, havingraced there several times in the past. Every time I have workedwith the F1 team since I joined the Driver Development Program in2010, I have had all the support I need to do the best job I canwhen I am in the car.

"The team's commitment to helping me develop, in all areas of myracing career, is a very positive sign that they believe in me andwant to help me reach the very top of my sport. For the Abu Dhabitest I've already had several conversations with the engineersabout what is planned and it's definitely going to be busy, but Iwas comfortable in the CT01 earlier this year, and very preparedmentally and physically, so now I'm just looking forward to gettingin the car."

Team Quotes

Giedo van der Garde (in Heikki Kovalainen's car forFP1): "It was another good session for me today and one Iwant to dedicate to my Grandpa who sadly passed away last week. Iknow he's always been very proud of me and he told me to enjoymyself whenever I'm driving, so I made sure I did today. Thecircuit is pretty technical but I was up to speed quickly anddidn't have any problems getting through the plan we were runningtoday. One thing that was really obvious was just how much thetrack evolves - even on my first run I could feel the grip levelsimproving with every lap, so by Sunday it will probably feel verydifferent, but for me in FP1 it was fine.

"I'll be back in the car again next week in Abu Dhabi at a trackI know well, and then I have two full days at the Yas MarinaCircuit in the young driver test. It's good to keep adding to themileage I've already done this year and I'm really pleased with howmuch progress I'm making with the car and the team in general."

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3:"Having sat out FP1 the key for me was getting through as many lapsas possible and I'm pleased with what we achieved in FP2. Thebalance has been pretty good all afternoon on both tyre compounds -we did have some understeer in the high speed corners on the firstrun on the soft tyres but we dialled that out for the long run andthe car felt good as the grip levels kept improving. It's good tosee clear air between us and the cars behind and maybe we can playwith the tyre strategy tomorrow to push closer to the cars ahead -that has to be the aim."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: "FP1 wentwell for me. Even though there wasn't a lot of grip early on thecar felt pretty good and we got through a lot of aero work thatgives us data to work on tonight. In FP2 we were again running wellbut on my second run on the soft tyres it looked like we might havehad a problem with the engine so we ended the session a littleearly to let the Renault Sport F1 guys take a look and make sure weprevented any damage. Until that point the car had again felt goodand we'd found a balance where deg levels on the tyres were verymanageable. I think we're in quite good shape for tomorrow andSunday so hopefully we can have a strong weekend here inIndia."

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: “It’s been a pretty good weekend so far. The balance has been better than we had in Korea and on my first run in qualifying the car felt ok. There was more to come but I had a bit of traffic that held me up and then on my second run I caught up with a bunch of cars going into turn 10 and lost a bit of grip, enough to put me off. I wasn’t going in too hard and there weren’t any issues with the car, I just lost the front end and even with the spin I didn’t lose any positions so I think we can still have a good race tomorrow.”

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: “I’m really happy with where we finished up today. All weekend the team has done a good job and I’ve had a balance I’ve been happy with in every session. We made a couple of changes for quali and the way the car felt and my laptimes showed that we made some progress, so I’m pleased with that. Now we’re looking ahead to tomorrow and to be honest anything could happen. Nobody’s too sure what tyre strategies will be run, it could be one stop or two, so we’ll look at that tonight and I’m pretty sure that if we make the right choice we could have a decent result in the race.”

                                Finished: 18th
                                Fastest lap: 1.30.786 (lap 57)

                                Team Quotes

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: “I had a pretty good start and was pretty quickly up with Heikki and holding pace with him and the cars ahead until the first stops. The pace and degradation levels were both really good on the first set of tyres so we opted to go longer and changed strategy from two to one stops. I came out just behind my teammate and then passed him when he had a KERS problem – after that I was up to 15th but with a few laps to go a couple of quicker cars behind passed me and I finished up 17th. Despite that it was a good race. The car felt great all afternoon and everyone’s worked really hard all weekend. We have some new parts coming next week in Abu Dhabi so let’s see what happens there.”

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: “My start was good. I was up to 17th after the first lap and keeping pace with Kobayashi and the pack ahead as we pulled away from the cars behind. We had planned to do two stops but with the way the car was performing we went long on the first stint and switched to a one stop, boxing just after halfway. I had a good stop but about two thirds of the way through the race I had a KERS problem which meant I had to let Vitaly pass. From there it was really just a matter of getting my car to the end of the race. Losing KERS obviously didn’t help but it was still pretty easy to pull away from the cars behind and without that problem I’m sure I’d have finished higher. Now we look ahead to next week’s race where we’ll have a few updates on the car and maybe those will help us close the gap to the cars ahead enough to help us fight for longer on race day.”

Braking stability & good brake cooling are very important

No kerbs are high but landing from kerb is very important for traction
In FP1 the track is usually dusty and green but the circuit evolves very quickly
Main observation is track temperature change: In FP1 and FP3 the ground temperature can be around 40°C, while for FP2, quali and the race it is often around 30°C - this is an important consideration for tyre evaluation and setup work

The package for the Yas Marina Circuit is the most significant update for a number of races from which the team is aiming to find around three to four tenths of second in laptime. Among these will be a revised exhaust layout incorporated within new rear bodywork, new front brake duct assemblies and detail updates to the floor, diffuser and front wing.

: “Abu Dhabi’s the first track I’ll be driving on in FP1 at this stage of the season that I’ve raced on before. With the obvious limits we work under in FP1 that’s a big advantage as it means I’m not having to learn my way around on my first couple of laps, and as we’re usually doing somewhere between 20 to 25 laps in first practice it means I can help the team even more right from the first run.

“I have to say I’m really enjoying the work I’m doing with the team and it’ll be even better in Abu Dhabi. In India my times were closer to my team mate than in any other session I’ve done and I think I’m really developing a good relationship with the engineers and the whole team. It’s obviously a bit tricky to really show what you can do when you have just one set of tyres and not much more than about 25 laps, but these sessions aren’t about showing how quick I can go, they’re about working to the program set by the team and continuing to learn as much as I can about the step up from GP2 to F1. After the Abu Dhabi race I’ll be staying on for the young driver test, and that’ll be another really good step forward in my development – two full days in the car on a track I’ve already driven on, and with a group of people who I’ve worked closely with for the last couple of months will give me a great chance to help the team get as much as they can from the test, and give me the opportunity to keep developing without some of the constraints of a race weekend FP1.”

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#03: “Abu Dhabi’s a track that I think everyone looks forward to getting back to. It’s just about the best overall venue for F1, with some of the best facilities for the teams that we see all year, a track that has some good technical challenges and pretty much perfect weather.

“As my girlfriend’s parents now live in Abu Dhabi we’ve spent quite a bit of time this year and as well as being a good place to race it’s also really good for the time off between Grands Prix. The weather makes training easy and there are several good golf courses where I can keep working on lowering my handicap so it’s somewhere I really like going to

“On track the first sector is pretty quick. If you’re anywhere near turn one you can see just how quick F1 cars change direction as we head into turn one, and from there it’s almost flat out through turns two and three. After that it’s a bit stop/start until the long straight down to T8 where there you have the first clear chance to overtake. From there it’s another flat out blast down to T11 and then it almost turns into a street circuit for the final sector. I’m sure for the people watching from the hotel it must look pretty hardcore, but from inside the car it’s not too much of a challenge. You need good traction and the braking stability has to be perfect, but once we’re through that final sector it’s back onto the start / finish straight and the start of another lap.”

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#02: “I really like Abu Dhabi. There’s always strong support from Russian fans around the track and the circuit itself is a good technical challenge where one of the most important areas we’ll be working on is braking stability. You can make up a lot of time if you can really attack the braking zones, particularly into turns eight and eleven after the two longest straights, so we’ll be working hard on that in the practice sessions.

“One of the other challenges in Abu Dhabi is dealing with the track evolution. At the start of FP1 it is always pretty green but the grip comes in quickly. FP1 and FP3 are both run when the track is nearing its hottest temperatures, but FP2, quali and the race are all run in the later afternoon and into the evening when track temperatures have dropped but the grip levels are continuing to rise, so we’ll be taking a close look at how best to manage the tyre degradation as the conditions change. As we’ve seen all season, looking after the tyres properly can make a real difference to performance, so that’s something everyone will be working on.”

                                                Team Quotes

Giedo van der Garde (in Vitaly Petrov’s car for FP1): “Obviously that was a pretty frustrating session, but these things sometimes happen. As soon as I went out on the installation lap I could hear that the engine sounded different to my previous FP1 runs and from what I understand the problem looks like it’s to do with the electronic boxes or the looms. It’s a shame as this is a track I know well and it would have helped to run more comparisons with the updates on Heikki’s car, but I still have the first two days of the young driver test in the car next week so that’s what I’m focusing on now.”

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: “For me today was pretty good. In the first session we ran a number of the new parts we brought here and then did comparison runs in FP2, as well as trying the soft tyres on a performance run, and a longer stint at the end of the session. The key to unlocking the potential of the upgrades is finding the right setup and with the amount of laps we ran over both FP1 and FP2 today we’ve generated enough data to give us a good chance to find something we can work with tomorrow. There’s a long night ahead but everyone’s working harder than ever to keep making progress and hopefully we’ll see some of the results of that tomorrow.”

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: “I sat out FP1 and saw how hard the team worked to sort out the electrical issue that cut Giedo’s session short. It was all sorted out by the start of FP2 so we could get on with the program immediately. On my first run we had a few handling issues to sort out so we made some mechanical changes and saw an immediate improvement on the second run. By the time we put on the soft tyres the times were getting quicker with every lap and I think we found a balance that’s working for us around here. We’ve generated a lot of data from all the runs we’ve done today on both tyre compounds so even with the problem we had this morning we’ve got through nearly the whole program and are set up ok for the rest of the weekend.”

Team Quotes

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: "I'mpretty pleased with my final lap but I know there was more pace inthe car. My first run on the medium tyres was ok but on the secondrun on the softs I had a problem with the DRS that meant I wasn'table to really attack the high speed corners and that cost me a bitof time. Despite that I think we're looking ok for tomorrow. Thebalance feels better with the lower track temperatures we had forquali and that'll most likely be the same tomorrow for the race, sohopefully I can have another good start and see how hard we canpush the cars ahead."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2:"Honestly I'm a little bit disappointed with where I've ended up inquali today because I thought the car would be a bit quicker thanit was. We had a slightly tricky FP3 and tried a couple of setupoptions to find a good balance and when I went out for my first runin Q1 it didn't really feel like I could push. It felt better onthe softs and on my fastest lap I was looking good up to turn 17but a bit of traffic after that held me up just enough to cost metime. The good thing is that the car definitely felt better whenthe track temperatures had dropped a bit so I think we'll be oktomorrow."

Team Quotes

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#3: "Ihad a good race today. In India the balance had felt good in therace and if I hadn't had the KERS problem I'm sure I'd have had abetter afternoon there. Here it was the same - the car felt goodand with more performance we'd be up there in the fight. We need tokeep working on the new parts we brought here to get the most outof them and we have three more days on track here to help us dothat so we have several reasons to be positive about the remainingtwo races.

"Today I had an ok start and my pace was pretty good. After thequicker cars passed me I was really on my own for most of the race. When the safety cars came out obviously everything bunched up againbut after each restart I was able to pull away easily and finishedthe race after probably getting as much as I could out of the cartoday."

Vitaly Petrov, car 21, chassis CT01-#2: "I madequite a good start and was side by side with Heikki. If we'd bothbraked at the same point we'd have probably hit so I braked a bitearly and from that point I was struggling for grip. I'm not surewhat the reason was but on both stints I just didn't have the paceto attack the cars ahead. I had understeer for most of the race andthat really held me up. It's obviously a bit of a disappointingrace, especially when you see that Heikki had good pace today, butsometimes it's like that. The car felt good on Friday afternoon butyesterday and today the grip just wasn't there. We have a bit oftime now to analyse why and then make sure we get back to the pacewe know we can find at the next race in Austin."

Shared values based on a passion formotorsports

Alpine: Jean Rédélé, pilot, businessman andautomotive pioneer, founded Alpine in 1955. Alpine's manufacturingand racing adventure started with the A106 coach based on theplatform and engine of the Renault 4 CV. The Alpine DNA is based onnimble, lightweight, high-performance vehicles with flowing lines:a formula that works well for both road and racing cars. Theever-young A110 - celebrating its 50th birthday - is probably themost iconic of Alpine's road cars. During its existence, Alpinesold 30,000 road sports cars. For several decades, it also carriedhigh Renault's sporting colours. Among other victories, Alpine wasWorld rally champion in 1973, winner of the Monte Carlo Rally in1973 and 1974 and of the Le Mans 24-hour event in 1978.  Itssporting record includes many prestigious victories. Alpine ranksamong the sporting legends.

Caterham Cars: The DNA that runs through everyCaterham can be traced back to the 1950s, when its first vehicle, the Seven, was designed. Caterham Cars has inspired passion andemotion ever since. It embodies the essence of what a sports carshould be. Today, that philosophy continues to guide Caterham Cars, making 'accessible fun' a reality for sports car buyers across theglobe.
Every weekend, over a thousand competitors race Caterham vehicleson tracks around the world, from Silverstone and Brands Hatch toBahrain and Abu Dhabi. Today, building on its racing heritage and40 years of experience in road cars, Caterham Cars is able tocombine its engineering excellence with the manufacturing andproduction capabilities of Renault to create a Caterham vehicle ofeven greater potential. This new vehicle will still possess thefundamental DNA of the Seven, which remains in production inDartford, UK.

At the heart of the project: the Alpine plant in Dieppe,France
The Dieppe plant will play a central role in the partnershipbetween Renault and Caterham Group, at the heart of the sportingpassion shared by the two partners. This is where the future sportsvehicles of Renault and Caterham will be built. The project is adevelopment opportunity for the Dieppe site, from the standpointnot only of production, but also the acquisition of a prized andunique expertise. The Alpine plant in Dieppe is currently dedicatedto building the vehicles developed by Renault Sport Technologies, both production (Clio R.S.) and racing models.

The Dieppe plant, built in 1969, is the historical home of theAlpine brand which gave birth to such legendary models as theBerlinette. Its core business is the assembly of sport vehicles, the assembly and sale of motorsports cars, and the sale of spareparts for motorsports vehicles, including at sports events. Itsflexibility and ability to adapt are just two of the specificcharacteristics that enable it to produce vehicles in small runs. With a workforce of over 300 and a surface area of 76,000 m² ofwhich 36,900 m² is built up, the plant has produced more than 400000 vehicles since 1969.

                                                        Fastest lap: 1.45. 936 (lap 56)

                                                        Total laps: 57

Giedo van der Garde: “I’m pleased with how today went. We were mainly working on aero performance, running sensors and different mechanical configurations on the car in the morning and afternoon sessions and to get the most out of them I had to drive consistently, carefully and not go for outright speed.

“I think the team’s happy with what I’ve done today and physically I feel great after running a good number of laps. After my FP1 session here in Abu Dhabi was cut short it was good to get some really decent time on track and the key thing for me is to keep developing my relationship with the team. There’s still a few tweaks we could make to the setup to suit my driving style a bit more but we have tomorrow to work on a few more setup options, as well as continuing to test parts and aero programs.”

Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi - 7th November 2012

Driver: Giedo van der Garde
Chassis: CT01-#02
Fastest lap: 1.45.106 (lap 66)
Total laps: 72

Giedo van der Garde: "It's been a great coupleof days here in Abu Dhabi and I want to thank the team for givingme the chance to drive in the rookie test yesterday and today.

"Today we ran considerably more laps than on day one. We spentthe morning running through more aero work and ran with a number ofdifferent setups that give the team a huge amount of data to workthrough that will be really useful for the last two races of theseason. In the afternoon we switched to longer runs, looking attyre management and how the car behaves on different fuel loads andI'm pleased with the progress we made. Towards the end of thesession we put soft tyres on and I had a couple of runs that werecloser to the performance runs we do in FP3 - the car had more fuelthan in quali but I'm pretty happy with where I ended up.

"Next up for me is FP1 in Brazil, another track that'll be newfor me but with the time I've had on track here, and in the otherFP1s I've done this year, I think that'll be a good session for me.I'm not doing FP1 in Austin as the team needs maximum time on trackfor the race drivers, but I'll be going to the race as ReserveDriver and I'm really looking forward to getting out there - it'sgoing to be a great week for sure."
