Gigastorage gives up license to use Philips CD-R patents
Gigastorage, a second-tier maker of optical discs in Taiwan, on April 23 applied at the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to terminate its compulsory license to use CD-R disc patents belonging to Royal Philips Electronics, bringing to an end the long-time dispute between the two companies, according to industry sources.
Gigastorage has decided to shift its production of CD-R discs to Thailand and the TIPO-granted compulsory license will thus become meaningless, the company pointed out.
The shift to Thailand is because exports to Europe and South Korea have suffered trade barriers, in addition to the advantages of much lower labor costs, proximity to the large market in Southeast Asia and preferential tariffs between ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) members, Gigastorage indicated. The shift from Taiwan to Thailand could reduce manpower and overhead costs by NT$50 million (US$1.5 million) a year, Gigastorage noted.
The shift of manufacturing equipment is under way, with production in Thailand to begin in June, Gigastorage said.
