Habib Jewels plans more showrooms
Gems company may add showroom in Miri, KK
KUCHING: Habib Jewels is considering expanding its business to Miri, encouraged by the enthusiastic response of Kuchingites to its branch here which had opened only two days ago.
Habib Jewels Sdn Bhd retail operations manager Mohd Zaruddin Mahmud said many people here had suggested that it open up another showroom in Sarawak. Studies are being carried out to see if Miri fits the bill.
Zaruddin was surprised by the reaction Habib Jewels received during its inaugural opening at tHe Spring Shopping Mall on Jan 10.
“The response to us coming here is very good. Kuching people can really spend, and they are very advanced when it comes to keeping up with the trend,” he said.
Zaruddin said when it comes to being trendy, the people here were not much different from those in Kuala Lumpur, unlike the other states.
From now until Jan 20, Habib has set up exhibition booths at the Mall’s centre court, right outside its showroom, to cater to numerous jewellery lovers, he said.
Habib did not rule out the possibility of setting up another showroom in Kuching, judging from the coming up of new complexes and malls, and the number of travellers shopping for jewellery here.
Zaruddin said Habib decided to enter East Malaysia due to the many invitations it had received from its clientele here. He said they had sought the best location for their store, settling for tHe Spring. The opening here was significant for the company as it was its first showroom outside Peninsular Malaysia.
He hoped that a Habib showroom would also open in Kota Kinabalu. He said the opening of tHe Spring saw a crowd of people from all walks of life, which was welcoming for Habib which catered to all income groups.
“Habib paves the way for everyone to own a diamond… a diamond for everyone. You can buy a diamond ring for RM388 only - that’s what we emphasise in our business, the design, the quality and, of course, affordable price. That’s our objective,” he said.
Habib has more than a thousand designs to offer the people here. Based on the past two days, popular items of jewellery here were trendy dangly earrings, he said.
“We have done our studies and we believe, in terms of per capita income, Kuching is among the top three in Malaysia so they can really spend on jewellery,” he said.
Basically the people here like exclusive pieces so Habib’s design has to be innovative to meet this demand for custom-made pieces created by its in-house designers. Habib also incorporates its signature designs into its product line, for example, its Empress collection launched last year.
Although some of its designs had been known to be replicated by other businesses, it still maintained its reputation as a trendsetter, having been in the line for 50 years.
Habib’s diamond pieces from South Africa, Russia and Australia are designed in Malaysia.
It also buys back diamonds with the value to be ascertained by its gemologist through the diamond’s 4Cs - Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut.
Zaruddin said Habib would be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, during which it would launch a year-long celebration packed with exciting activities like roadshows and promotions.
Habib will also be launching new designs for its sub-brands such as coming up with at least 100 new designs for its Empress collection.
“We want the people to know that if they come to our showroom, they can go home with at least a piece of jewellery,” he said.
Habib was first established as MA Habib Mohamed at Penang’s Pitt Street - popularly known as the island’s ‘Jewellers’ Corner’ - by its founder Habib Mohamed in 1958.
