Women shuttlers hail decision to revise ranking bonus

PETALING JAYA: The women shuttlers will have an extra reason to go all out to finish among the top three in the Uber Cup qualifying tournament, which will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from Feb 19-24.
The women players, led by Julia Wong, are all excited with the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) decision to revise the international ranking bonus for women.
The Malaysian women will now get 80% of what their male counterparts had been getting based on the world standings.
Julia, the world No. 32, said that the women would be out to further improve their standards, starting with the Uber Cup qualifiers.
“This is great news for Malaysian women shuttlers. We will now get better incentives. This will only push us to work harder to improve our world rankings,” said the national No. 2.
“It is not only about getting more money. It feels good that women shuttlers are given due recognition.”
Julia said that the women would not rest on their laurels.
“The BAM have taken notice of our achievements. Now, we must continue to move forward. If we continue to produce good results, perhaps the BAM will give equal incentives for men and women players one day,” she said.
“It will be a great start for us (the women) if we can finish among the top three in the Uber Cup qualifiers. Only the top three are assured of places in the Finals (in May in Jakarta).”
Asia, however, can still claim an extra spot in the Finals if the fourth-placed team are ranked higher than their European counterparts. This will be determined by the world rankings on Feb 28.
“But we should not stop there (making the top three cut at the qualifiers) ... we must continue to strife for breakthrough performances in other major tournaments,” she said.
Besides Julia, the others in the women’s team for the qualifiers are China Open champion Wong Mew Choo, Anita Raj Kaur, Lydia Cheah, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Lim Pek Siah-Haw Chiou Hwee and Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying.
On her third Uber Cup outing, Julia said: “I was a reserve in my debut (2004).
“Two years ago, I played as the second singles but we failed to qualify. This time, I hope we will make the cut.
“I will try to win all my matches. The first hurdle will probably be against Singapore in the quarter-finals. It will only get tougher after that but we will give it our best shot.”
Malaysia are in Group D with India. They should top the group to set up a probable meeting with Singapore in the last eight.
If they advance, their semi-final opponents could be Japan, Hong Kong or Taiwan.
