LATEST SCAM ALERT ON CREDIT CARD !!!
Just within an hour ago, one of my colleague received a call from so called officer from UOB bank. This officer informed her new credit card is ready to be collected from their branch. My colleague was surprised as she never applied for any new credit card from UOB bank and this was how the conversation went..
Miss Tan:
(Not her real name)
I never applied for any credit card wor. Can you cancel the card immediately?
Fake UOB officer:
Is it? Are you really sure never apply for it?
Miss Tan:
Yes, I never apply for it.
Fake UOB officer:
Is your IC number xxxxxx-xx-xxxx .
Miss Tan:
Yes, that’s my ic number.
Fake UOB officer:
Is your address is ‘blah, blah, blah, Johor’?
Miss Tan:
Nope, that’s not my address.
Fake UOB officer:
Oh, ok. I do think somebody applied a card under your name.
Miss Tan:
So, can you cancel the card immediately.
Fake UOB officer:
I’m sorry, miss. We can’t cancel the card as it’s already approved and a card already created under your name.
Miss Tan:
Is it? Then how?
Fake UOB officer:
Don’t worry, miss. In order to cancel it, you need to lodge a report to Bank Negara. I’ll help you to connect to Bank Negara immediately. An officer will handle your case.
Miss Tan:
Ok.
My colleague got worried that somebody used her identity to apply for a card. At first she thought some credit card agent applied for her without her knowing about it. Few second later, a fake Bank Negara officer answered the phone.
Fake Bank Negara Officer:
Hello miss, how may I help you?
Miss Tan:
I just got a call by UOB officer. She told me that I have a credit card need to be collected. But, I never apply for any credit card. I wanted to cancel the card. So, they connected me to you in order to lodge a complaint.
Fake Bank Negara Officer:
I see. Don’t worry miss, I’ll proceed with making a report. Can you give me your full name, ic number and telephone number?
Miss Tan:
My name is Tan xxx, ic number xxxxxx-xx-xxxx, telephone number 01x-xxxxxx.
Fake Bank Negara Officer:
Ok. Do you have any other credit cards in any banks?
Miss Tan:
Yes, I do.
Fake Bank Negara Officer:
Which bank do you have with?
Miss Tan:
Maybank and Citibank.
Fake Bank Negara Officer:
Can I have the credit card number of Maybank?
Luckily, my colleague started to get suspicious the moment the bank Negara officer asked. She refused to give and told the officer she’ll call back.
She hang up the phone immediately.
REMEMBER #1: BANK NEGARA WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOUR OTHER CREDIT CARDS DETAILS.
REMEMBER #2: YOU DON’T NEED TO LODGE REPORT WITH BANK NEGARA IN ORDER TO CANCEL YOUR CREDIT CARD. YOU CAN JUST ASK THE BANK TO CANCEL IT. IF YOU ARE CONCERNED, LODGE REPORT WITH POLICE. |
