Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20: "Unfortunately the rear wing was stuck in the high downforce configuration for the second run which definitely masked the real pace there is in the car. We've also struggled with getting the most out of the tyres all weekend but I think the increased temperatures tomorrow will suit the car much more and we'll be in good shape to show what we can really do in the race."

Jarno Trulli, Car 21: "I've had a few issues with the power steering in practice but the team worked well to resolve that for qualifying and the car definitely felt better than it had this morning and yesterday. We'll clearly be much quicker when we can get the tyres up to full temperature so it'll be an exciting race for us tomorrow and I think we'll be in good shape to push the guys ahead who we were much closer to in the warmer conditions in pre-season testing."

Thierry Salvi, Renault Sport F1 Support Leader: "Firstly I want to say that the atmosphere in this team is very good. This means we are all able to work together very well and it's important that we can do that to get the best out of the car this year. From the engine perspective I think we are ok on usage and the drivers' feedback has been very good. Obviously to maximise the performance of the car the whole package can work better and I'm sure we can unlock the true potential of the car when we have worked through areas like the tyre usage."

Mike Gascoyne, Chief Technical Officer: "Both drivers did a very good job in qualifying today, despite both of them being hampered by issues - Heikki had a rear wing problem whcih meant he couldn't improve on his second set of tyres, and Jarno reported loss of grip on his second set so we clearly were not able to maximise the car's real performance today. However, I think that we have definitely taken a step forward in qualifying. We have been struggling to get temperature into the tyres all weekend, and have had some issues with the power steering, but we made significant progress in qualifying. On the positive side the tyre warm-up issues will be much better in the race and looking ahead I am very confident that we can get back to the level of performance we showed in winter testing as we continue through the early part of the season."

Tony Fernandes, Team Principal: "I am happy with qualifying. Obviously we are paying the price of the limited running we had in testing, but I have to admit I was a bit nervous before the session and having seen where we ended up I am pleased with what both drivers produced today. We continue to learn all the time and as this is essentially a completely new car we have to work hard on a number of areas to help us achieve our full potential, particularly on tyre management - the car looks like it has Malaysian blood as it clearly prefers hotter conditions! Despite that we are all looking forward to the race tomorrow, and with much more development to come here, in Malaysia and China, before we head back to Europe, I am happy with where we are today."

Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20 - qualified 19th, DNF: "Until the retirement I was very pleased with my own performance. I had a good start and was then staying with Alguersuari and Perez until the water leak brought my race to an end. I think this has been a bit of a tricky weekend for us, perhaps more difficult than we had anticipated, but we have some time now to analyse why the pace wasn't quite where we had expected it to be and to work on the reliability before we get to Malaysia. We're all ready to put in the hard work to make sure we keep moving forward, and these are still early days in the life of Team Lotus so we'll put in the hours and look for an improved performance in our home race in Malaysia."

Jarno Trulli, Car 21 - qualified 20th, finished 15th: "It was really good to finish the race and to show that there is some pace in the car, despite some of the problems we have had to work through this weekend. We now have a lot of very useful data we can use to help us move ahead in Malaysia and China and I think once we have got through these early teething troubles we will show that we have taken the step forward we want to this year."

Thierry Salvi, Renault Sport F1 Support Leader: "That is a good result for us. We were not able to finish the race with Heikki but with Jarno we saw some encouraging signs from the car's behaviour and I think we will be able to extract more performance from it in the next race after we have been through the data in more detail. For the first race with a Renault Sport F1 engine in a Team Lotus car this is a good day."

Mike Gascoyne, Chief Technical Officer: "After a pretty tough weekend I am very pleased with both Jarno and Heikki's race performances. We had an issue with water leak on the radiator on Heikki's car and soon after his pitstop that unfortunately brought an end to his race. He had been very strong on the options so that was a shame, but he had looked good until that point which is obviously encouraging. Jarno struggled early on with the prime tyres so we swapped him onto the options and he quickly found his pace. Our speed in the race was much more representative of the pace we had shown in testing so for Malaysia the target is to make sure we achieve that level throughout the whole weekend. In summary it was good to get one car to the end with solid pace and thank you to the whole team for some very good work all week."

Tony Fernandes, Team Principal: "I am happy. After a tense day to see Jarno have a strong finish in 15th and show good speed in the race is very pleasing. We knew we had a potential issue with the radiator on Heikki's car so when he had to pull over it was not a surprise, but the main thing for me today is that the pace we showed in the pre-season tests is back. We were able to stay with the midfield teams and that has been the stated target for this year so now we know we have a base to build on for the season ahead and some time to fix the radiator issue before we go home to Malaysia for the next race. With the work ethic and spirit in our team I am confident we will take another step forward in Sepang and we are all very excited about coming home again for the next race."

TONY FERNANDES RECEIVES CBE FROM QUEEN ELIZABETH II

EMBARGOED UNTIL 1230 UK / 2030 MALAYSIA 31ST MARCH 2011

LONDON, 31 March 2011

The Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award will serve to further facilitate the promotion of commercial and cultural ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia, says Dato’ Sri Tony Fernandes who was honoured with the award by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in London today.

The award is attributed to his "services to promote commercial and educational links" between the UK and Malaysia.

“I am extremely humbled to have received this award today and I would like to thank Her Majesty The Queen for bestowing such an honour upon me. More than a personal honour, it will serve as a catalyst to further enhance relations between the UK and Malaysia, particularly in the areas of business, culture and education,” says Tony Fernandes CBE.

The iconic entrepreneur wears several hats including Team Principal of Team Lotus, Group CEO of the world’s best low cost airline AirAsia and founder of the fledgling Malaysian-based conglomerate Tune Group.

He adds: “I receive this award today not on my behalf, but on behalf of all the incredible people I work with, wherever they may be around the world. It is their dedication, passion, enthusiasm and hard work that drives me on every single day and it is also my great honour to have the privilege of working with them.”

Tony’s personal credo is "Dream the Impossible, Believe the Unbelievable and Never Take No for an Answer" and he believes deeply in providing opportunities throughout his businesses for talent to flourish, for meritocracy to reign and for helping people realise their dreams. "I realised mine, and I am determined to help others realise theirs too," sums up Tony’s approach to his work and personal life.

His business philosophy is simple: Serve the Underserved - a philosophy encapsulated in AirAsia's memorable tag line: "Now Everyone Can Fly." Having democratised air travel by freeing it from the clutches of the elite, Fernandes is determined to break down the affordability barrier in other aspects of daily life - hence Tune Hotels, Tune Money and Tune Talk, the radical Team Lotus approach to F1 - and the Epsom College campus in Malaysia.

The CBE is the second major award conferred on Fernandes in Europe. In 2010, the French government conferred upon him the title of Officier of the Legion d’honneur, the highest award for a non-French national, for his outstanding contributions to the aviation industry. Fernandes was also recently named "Asia Businessman of the Year 2010" by the international magazine Forbes, and has gathered a slew of other top awards from private bodies and media organisations for his innovative approach to business.

About the AirAsia Team Lotus Driver Development Program:

AirAsia Team Lotus Driver Development Program

The AirAsia Team Lotus Driver Development Program was initiated in early 2010 in conjunction with AirAsia. From the early days of just two drivers in 2010, 2011 now sees the talent development pool expand to seven drivers, giving an array of talent from around the world the chance to climb through the ranks, right up to the ultimate motor racing challenge – the Formula One World Championship.

The Driver Development Program’s primary objective is to use the expertise with Team Lotus to help grow the best young driving talent from across the globe. Around the drivers selected is an organisation that nurtures and supports the drivers through career guidance, coaching and sponsorship procurement.

Formula One drivers are athletes and the AirAsia Team Lotus Development Drivers mirror their F1 counterparts with the same physical and mental training to ensure their race preparation is perfect. The rigours of driving a Formula One Car are immense and the earlier a driver can learn the work ethic needed to succeed the more likely he will be successful in Formula One.

All ten drivers are part of the Team Lotus family and they are taught not only how to race, but also given in-depth insight into the inner workings of the F1 team – from vehicle dynamics to simulators, giving them an in-depth understanding of the relationship between them and the cars they compete in.

AirAsia has been an important part of the selection process of these drivers. The team at AirAsia have the same belief in nurturing youth so that our young drivers are not just the quickest racers on track but also the most well balanced, helping them prepare fully for the journey ahead of them as they strive to become Formula One World Champions of the future.

Team thoughts
Tony Fernandes, Team Principal: "Team Lotus returns homeand we are all excited about the race ahead. There will be threeteams here with links to Malaysia but only one team that hasMalaysian blood running deep in its veins, with Malaysian staffcontributing to our growth at every level and which has been builtfrom the ground up in the same style as Formula One's grandeeteams. We are enormously proud of what we have already achieved injust 18 months and we have done it through hard work anddedication, not by buying seemingly instant success throughstickers on a car. We will continue to work extremely hard as wedevelop the car and the team, this season and for many years tocome, but we will not rush into anything. Our team is growing inthe right way, just like AirAsia has done, and when we look back inyears to come history will show that by laying solid foundationsnow we will achieve long-term success."

Mike Gascoyne, Chief Technical Officer: "We left Australiawith mixed feelings about the race. Heikki's pace in the early lapswas a good step forward for us, and Jarno's race pace took us closeto what we showed in the pre-season tests we can do, but we didstruggle all weekend with the tyres and a couple of small issuesthat we have now had time to resolve back at the factory. Theconditions at Sepang should suit us more favourably. I think thetrack temperatures will help us show more of the car's true paceand as the layout it is quite similar to Barcelona - relativelyhigh aero and a good mix of low and high speed turns - I think wewill be able to extract more performance from the car than we wereable to in Melbourne. The whole team is excited about the challengeahead - they are energised by the huge local support we have andthat will help us all put in a performance that will do our fansproud."

Heikki Kovalainen (car 20, chassis T128-01): "Malaysia hasa combination of all kinds of corners. The first few corners arevery slow chicanes, then turns four, through five, six, seven andeight are very fast and you need to have a really good balancethere. Then towards the end of the lap there's two very difficultbraking points, corners where you're turning and braking into thecorner. I think it's turns 11 and 13, both right-handers. You cantake a couple of deeper lines there. Those are the main points.Getting your braking stability right in those kind of corners isone of the key elements to making a good lap time inSepang.

" Physically it's one of the toughest races, maybe togetherwith Singapore which is also very difficult. It's something westart preparing for immediately after Australia. I arrived inMalaysia immediately after Melbourne and I started preparing thehydration and working with my nutritionist to prepare for the raceitself. If you prepare properly it's no issue. I'm looking forwardto it - I enjoy being in the heat and I'm not distracted by it atall ."

Jarno Trulli (car 21, chassis T128-03): "I'm really firedup for this weekend's race. This is our home race and we want to doour best to make the fans proud of us. There will be a lot ofsupport for us in the stands and having been here for a week I'vealready seen that the level of support has gone up a lot since lastyear, so whatever happens it will be a great weekend forus.

"I've been keeping busy since arriving and spent a coupleof days up in the Malaysian hills training on my bike with a localpro team and that's given me an outstanding preparation for what isalways a tough weekend in the car. Sepang is a very challengingtrack. It's technical and it pushes the drivers and the cars veryhard but we believe that the package we have can help us have agood weekend here in Malaysia and I am really looking forward toseeing how the car responds in the heat. In a perfect world wewould be able to do something amazing in front of our home fans, but let's see. It's still early days for us, and while we areclearly closer to the midfield teams than we were a year ago westill have some time to make up, so I think we are all beingrealistic and working very hard to continue moving forward thisyear."

Reaction To Putra Jaya Demo

Team Lotus held the first Formula 1 street demonstration in theMalaysian city of Putrajaya this weekend.

Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli took our demo car to thepublic, blasting round a course laid on out on one of the mainroads of Malaysia's administrative centre. Alexander Rossi also hadhis share of laps as one of the AirAsia Team Lotus DriverDevelopment Program recruits unveiled during the event.
Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad ShaberyCheek was on hand at the event and believes the initiative to takeFormula 1 and Team Lotus as close as possible to the people isvital in shaping a motorsport culture in the nation.
He said: "It created a lot of enthusiasm in Malaysia as a whole.I'm sure it will create a lot of interest for Malaysians to watchFormula 1 but to be part of it as well. What we need is to exposethis kind of motorsport to be part of the Malaysian culture amongthe young people. Then we'll develop more people to be involvedwith motorsports and Formula 1 particularly. We hope that this isgoing to be a permanent feature of the Formula 1 race at Sepang, not only this year."
Team Lotus Team Principal Tony Fernandes explained why he chosePutrajaya as the site for this event: "Normally, everything is heldin KL. This gives the chance for a much smaller town to have a lookat a Formula 1 team. I wanted to capture the setting, and forpeople to see something other than the two towers.
"I think the Malaysian people relate to this team a lot - it'snot just a sticker on a car, there's life and blood here, we haveMalaysian shareholders and there are lots of Malaysians in theteam. We really enjoy coming here and it was nice to see that wehave support from the Minister of Sport and the SepangInternational Circuit as well as the peoples' support."
Datuk Seri also paid tribute to Team Lotus Team Principal TonyFernandes and CEO Riad Asmat for bringing the event to Putrajaya:"They are fantastic people; very creative. They come up with veryinnovative ideas for what should be done for the nation, and fortheir branding exercises. I think this is a fantastic event."
Mike Gascoyne, Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli also gavetheir thoughts about the street demonstration.
Mike said "It's a really fantastic venue and it was great tohave a lot of important people joining us, but the main reason forthese sorts of events is to get close to the public - to get thecrowds up close and personal to it. When we are at grands prix it'svery difficult for the public to get up close and feel what Formula1 is like. Here they can touch it!"
Heikki told us "We got the car out to the local public forthe first time, and they hopefully had a bit of fun. It's our homerace, we have a lot of Malaysian blood in the team and we spend alot of time here in front of our home crowd. It's very important -we just want to show the experience of Formula  1 so thepeople who can't go to the race track can still see F1 in thestreet."
Jarno summed up the day, saying "The main thing is that we showthe Malaysian people that we appreciate their support and we do ourbest in order to make them happy. Sometimes F1 looks a bit too faraway from people, so this is the best way to get close to them. Itwas extremely warm and the people were excited ahead of the grandprix weekend."
