。single tie system.. |

[color=Blue]KUALA LUMPUR: Companies should begin restructuring operations and investment strategies now to minimise predicaments from the single-tier tax system, tax consultants said.
KPMG Tax Services Sdn Bhd said the six-year transitional period to use section 108 tax credit balance was sufficient for companies to adapt to the new tax system but they should not procrastinate their restructuring activities.
Under the single-tier tax system, all dividends would be tax-exempt from Jan 1, 2008 onwards. Additionally, companies would not be required to pay dividends through the section 108 tax credit system, and they would be given six years to use the remaining balances in the section 108 account.
KPMG Tax Services executive director Nicholas Crist said: ¡§Tax credit balances will effectively be frozen as at the end of this year. Technically, companies only have two-and-a-half months to think about what they need to do to prepare themselves for the single-tier tax system.¡¨
Another executive director, Chew Theam Hock said: ¡§There are various strategies that companies can adopt to prepare themselves for the new tax system.
¡§Although you can no longer deduct interest expenses against dividends anymore under the new system, you can deduct these (interest) expenses against business income. Hence, instead of acquiring other companies, companies can consider acquiring businesses.¡¨
When a company acquired a business, he said it took over the underlying assets such as plant and machinery, as well as employees. Assuming that the company borrowed money for the acquisition, the interest costs incurred were fully deductible in tax returns, he said.
Chew said: ¡§However, if the company borrows money to buy shares of another company, it would not be able to set off the interest expenses against its business income.¡¨
Likewise, shareholders, particularly those dependent on dividend income and belonged to lower tax brackets, should diversify their investments.
KPMG¡¦s senior partner Quah Poh Keat said: ¡§Shareholders, especially pensioners, should diversify their investments and tap into Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) market and bonds.¡¨
He said they should do this instead of focusing only on dividend payouts through the shareholding.
