Corvettes for RMN

SHAH ALAM: DSME may well have gotten the inside track into RMN’s quest for missile corvettes to replace its FAC fleet but there are apparently a lot of vessel out there that is suitable for the same requirement. The DME 85 metre corvette. As this is not a “Guide to missile corvettes” I will limit myself to three other examples only, two of which are a design concept only just like the DSME missile corvettes. If you want an extensive list feel free to browse the web. The first vessel I like to highlight is the 85 metre version of the Lockheed Martin LCS. The 85 metre corvette version of the LCS.The graphic above showed the corvette with various launchers for anti-ship missiles and SAMs together with a 76mm gun, making it more powerful ship than the current LCS. The three versions of the LCS proposed by Lockheed Martin all better armed than the current LCS. The top is the 150 metre, second 115 metre (an uparmed LCS) and the 85 metre corvette. Is the 85 metre LCS from Lockheed Martin a viable candidate for the RMN’s requirement. Of course it is but only if the hull cost less than RM150 million. The second candidate is the CMN’s Sword 90 stealth corvette. The corvette was unveiled at the recent Euronaval 2014 show. Sword 90 corvette by CMN.Compared to the DSME and Lockheed Martin vessels, the Sword 90 looked way cooler. It also has some design cues from the Zumwalt destroyer of the US Navy. According to CMN the ship has been designed for brown and blue water warfare. More importantly, most of the equipment destined for the corvette are very similar to our own LCS although the radar is from Airbus Defence. The Sword 90 corvette concept.CMN has a good track record in providing FACs – RMN operate 4 Combattante FACs. It is a French company, however. The third vessel is not a concept, its the Al Baynunah class corvette of which six are already in service with the UAE Navy. And I foresee the Al Baynunah as the biggest threat to the DSME entry due to the close relationship between Malaysia and UAE. The Al Baynunah corvette.Indeed if we play our cards right, we may even get the UAE government to pay for the hull (the ships are built by Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding) while we pay for the machineries and equipment including the weapons. The corvette -designed by CMN – is smaller at 71 metre so it could be cheaper than the three other corvettes. Al Baynunah corvette. As the Al Baynunah corvettes are already in service, most of the teething problems have been sorted out already unlike the other three ships including the DSME corvette. — Malaysian Defence
