Hodgson: You'll Never Walk Alone, But It's Time To Walk Away

THERE'S not much more that can be said in regard to Roy Hodgson and Liverpool - at least from the point of view of the fans and the writers that know and understand Liverpool Football Club well.
For those outside of it, however, perhaps they need to hear it all again.
It seems that in spite of facts, statistics, and obvious fan revolts, the media continue to believe in Roy Hodgson and feel, most of all, that he has been treated completely unfairly by those who love the club he is in charge of.
But what is unfair is the treatment those around the club have received and the constant notifications of how we don't know what we are talking about. Oh that's right, fans have only been eating, sleeping, and breathing the club since most were too young to even totally understand the game. But hell, what do they know?
It's bad enough that the fans have had to live through the poor results, and even worse, the awful performances this season without being told how disastrous the squad is or that it's really none of Hodgson's fault that the club is in the mess it's in. It's Benitez's fault of course. Why didn't I think of that?
It has to be Benitez. He's the one that took Liverpool from an underachieving top-four team to two Champions League finals (winning one), consistent top four finishes, and runners-up spot just two years ago.
It must have been all those dreadful players he bought and managed so atrociously to achieve those accomplishments, all of which weren't good enough at the time, but Hodgson's current record of seven wins in 20 games is of course by far the better record...
I abhor using sarcasm to make a point, but it seems that the media has left us with little else since they refuse to look at the facts.
Here's a fact for you, reported following what was another disastrous defeat to Blackburn: Kenny Dalglish has won more trophies than Hodgson has won away games in all his time managing English sides.
While this kind of statement may be superfluous, it's certainly a very glaring observation about the lack of success Hodgson has had in England, not just at Liverpool. The fact he hasn't won any major trophies should be proof enough that he was never good enough for Liverpool.
Whatever the media decide their opinion is about Benitez, one thing you can't discount is the trophies he's won, in a much shorter-lived career than Hodgson.
Mess
For those who tuned in to the Blackburn game, many of whom must have watched on TV because the traveling support barely attended (I wonder why?), they would have noticed two things.
First, the staggeringly abominable performance churned out by the team on the pitch. Although, even before seeing that, some might have noticed that the lineup was altered quite a bit to the previous game against Bolton. To the nascent viewer (the English media in particular when it comes to Liverpool), this wouldn't seem out of the ordinary, but to those who watched the much improved performance against Bolton, it begs the question of why mess with a system that worked quite well a few days earlier?
That game involved one of the better performances of the season, and just happened to have Gerrard in the middle, and Agger at the back. The team pressed higher and Agger was in the opposition half attacking more often than not. Subsequently, he was once again left on the bench against Blackburn (perhaps he was deemed "too offensive" .
The second thing one may have noticed watching the dross against Blackburn was the vomit-inducing rhetoric spewed forth from the commentators. Throughout the match, as Liverpool played worse and worse, and Hodgson looked his usually clueless self on the sideline, they continued to back him.
They believed it was all down to the disaster Benitez left in his wake over the summer, and that none of the current tactics, players, or system out on the pitch was at all because of Hodgson. And even more damaging was their refusal to point out his mistakes in the past, most notably with his time at Blackburn, where he did a Benitez by leaving the team in such poor shape that the following manager was left with a relegation battle.
Only difference is, Hodgson isn't blamed for that failure like Benitez is being blamed for Liverpool's. All that was mentioned was that he led Blackburn to sixth place.
What also wasn't mentioned is the fact that Fulham are now in a terrible state since his departure. Surely it must be his fault, as Liverpool's failings are Benitez's?
The media doesn't seem to think so. The British media have accepted Roy Hodgson's dopey nice-guy act as genuine, and therefore he remains untouchable despite his obvious deficiencies as a football manager.
The constant lowering of expectations hasn't helped, and for some reason the media keep buying into it. After the Wolves defeat, he cynically said, "If fans are going to expect to [beat the bottom-of the-league team] that's very dangerous. If they're going to do that they're going to be in for a lot of disappointments."
Nasty
Hodgson clearly lives his life in disappointment by never approaching anything with positive intentions and expectations. He may choose to live his life in this manner, but Liverpool fans want, and deserve, better.
For all the comments surrounding the current Liverpool manager, with many that could be construed as nasty or derisive, I don't think anyone believes he's an evil man. He's just a man who blindly believes in himself, despite the outward results proving he's not up to the position of manager at a club like Liverpool.
At the end of the day, I hope he moves on from Liverpool with a deeper understanding of the game and takes the (harsh) lessons he's had to learn in his short time in charge to better himself as a manager.
For all the fans' disappointment and anger vented toward Hodgson throughout the first half of the season, we can only wish the man well. And for all his obvious inadequacies as a manager, his glaring negativity and nigh on spiteful reactions to criticism and his own team's fans, it's only right to remind him that he'll never walk alone, but perhaps now it's time to just walk away.

Liverpool FC legend Alan Kennedy gives his support to Roy Hodgson
ROY HODGSON may be struggling desperately to win over the Liverpool supporters, but the beleaguered Reds’ boss has earned the backing of Anfield legend Alan Kennedy, ahead of Sunday’s crunch FA Cup tie with Manchester United.
Hodgson leads his side to Old Trafford this weekend knowing his future has been left hanging in the balance, after a series of poor results and performances this season.
But former Reds star Kennedy has lent his support to the 63-year-old, despite one online fans’ petition collecting more than 19,000 signatures demanding his immediate removal from the Anfield hotseat.
Kennedy told the ECHO: “Lots of people say Hodgson is a dead man walking, and you can see why. But I don’t see it like that. Roy has always impressed me with the way he conducts himself and his refusal to get involved in bad-mouthing other players and teams, and he has a good record wherever he has been.
“But this is a results business, and if you don’t get results – as Roy has found – you will be under pressure as a manager.
“The performances have been as big a worry, and it is no surprise that questions are being asked. The fans are hurting and they want answers, of course they do.
“My opinion is that Roy is trying his best, and deserves to be backed. Liverpool back their managers, and they are not dead and buried. A result at Old Trafford could take so much pressure off everyone.”
Liverpool’s away form has been a source of real concern, with just one win on the road. Kennedy believes the Reds can find a cure for their travel sickness, but says Hodgson’s men need to work hard to shed their fear.
“The away form issue is massive, and it is definitely affecting certain players,” said Kennedy.
“They are reminded constantly of their poor form on the road, and it affects their game. They need to block out what has gone before, if possible, and focus on getting out of this mess.
“Manchester United represents as big a challenge as there is. Liverpool are travelling to play a top team, unbeaten in the league, and there can be no excuses for lack of effort or commitment.
“In a way, they have very little to lose. United will favourites, but Liverpool can treat the game as a one-off, and who knows? It’s been said a few times already, but it could be a stepping stone, something to build from and gather a bit of confidence from. They showed in the league game (in September) at Old Trafford that they could battle, they were a tad unlucky not to get something from the game, with Dimitar Berbatov in sensational form, and there is no reason why they can’t go there and compete again. This is cup football, it is a chance to forget what has gone before and to get a huge result in a huge game.”

这个是要他下台的。。。
Phil Thompson: Time to end Roy Hodgson's Liverpool FC reign now

LIVERPOOL legend Phil Thompson today said that a parting of the ways between Liverpool and Roy Hodgson is the only way forward. Former Assistant Manager Thompson said he hoped the Reds could a strike a deal with Hodgson which allowed him to leave the club with dignity after trying his best in the face of an array of problems. Said Thompson: “I hate knee jerk reactions – this is not that – and I take no pleasure in saying this. “But these are unprecedented times – we are wallowing in mediocrity.”
This is an awful time for Liverpool Football Club and everyone involved with it.I well remember how it was for those few weeks before Gerard Houllier and I left in 2004 - and at times it was really unbearable.
Of course I can’t speak for Gerard but I took the criticism of him at that time quite personally and I felt a lot of his uncertainty too.
So much flak over the team’s performances and results were aimed at Gerard - but I felt we were all in it together.
You could not help but be affected by what was going on and the mood was very difficult during those final days.
From the gate man at Melwood to the people at reception, to the technical staff and the players - it hung over all of us.
So right now I am pretty certain it will be similar behind the scenes at Melwood and Anfield - but in truth probably far worse.
We had had success before those days and had known good times.
But Roy Hodgson has been at the club for barely six months and it has seemingly come to this. So this is different. Very different indeed.
We are witnessing unprecedented things in unprecedented times at Anfield.
We have never before known such overwhelming calls for the manager to go from so many supporters and with such volume.
I don’t like it because at Liverpool we like to think we handle these things differently and we don’t go around calling for the manager’s head like this. But these as I say are unparallelled times for the club.
The fans are emotional and angry and you have to understand that and take it into account.
Over recent years these supporters have been through some terribly worrying times with the ownership issues and the debts.
Finally, they have seen an end to the Hicks and Gillett era and the debts wiped away - but instead there are now big problems on the pitch.
This is a proud and successful club with the best supporters in the world - and they are understandably hurting.
I have to be honest and admit that the only way I see for us to get out of here now is for a dignified parting of the ways.
Roy Hodgson has done his very best but he has had a lot of problems to deal with and sometimes you just have to admit that the club and the issues are just too big for you to handle. And that something has to happen.
If Roy and the club can strike a deal that lets him go with his head up and allows Liverpool FC to move on, then sad as I am to say it, I believe that would be in the best interests of everybody concerned.
Roy did come in under the previous owners and he did inherit a depleted squad lacking talent and commitment.
He hasn’t had a Chief Executive Officer to work with in recent months and at times it cannot have been easy for him. Early on he had to deal with the Mascherano situation, trying to keep a player who wanted to go and who eventually forced his way and got his wish.
But that said Roy has got some things fundamentally wrong with tactics and personnel, particularly away from home. The truth is we have not seen one fantastic performance from Liverpool all season. And we have seen some abject ones.
We are wallowing in mediocrity and the owners, who to their credit have taken their time and listened to lots of people to try and grow to understand the club, must surely know this is not what Liverpool FC is all about. Quite the opposite.
They’ll be talking to the right people about how to handle things I hope - and for me two of the best people they could listen to are Commercial Director Ian Ayre and Kenny Dalglish.
I hate knee jerk reactions - this isn’t that - and take no pleasure saying so.
But it is time for a parting of the ways between Roy Hodgson and Liverpool. One that happens with a degree of dignity for everyone’s sake. |
