*Najib abolishes Mahathir's 37 year old Cabotage Policy for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan*
The Cabotage policy was introduced by Mahathir when he was Trade and Industry Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. It came into effect on 1 January 1980.
This policy meant that only Malaysian-owned ships are allowed to engage in domestic shipping between domestic ports in Malaysia and had the effect that foreign ships cannot unload their cargoes directly in other ports and have to go thru designated ports such as Port Klang.
So, it means that ships cannot deliver imported cargoes to Sabah directly and must unload in Port Klang and then another Malaysian-owned ship will deliver the cargo from Port Klang to Sabah adding additional costs.
This is one of the reasons why price of goods in Sabah and Sarawak has always been higher than in Peninsular Malaysia.

东马获得如此待遇,纯粹政治环境使然。
不给,定存州输了,政权也输了。
给了,至少还可以撑着,再过几年,政局稳定了,再慢慢削减好处,然后全数拿回来。
这可是巫统算盘。至于东马,理应该拿,学聪明了,别让巫统这么轻易再要回去。 |
