Abg Jo: Private sector can change Kuching’s landscape

by Antonia Chiam, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 15, 2013, Tuesday

KUCHING: The cooperation of the private sector can change the Kuching landscape and attract visitors.

According to Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, the private sector plays an important role in moving the state economy.

“The economic development of the state is moved by the private sector and its competitiveness. With tourism and better connectivity in place, their cooperation can bring convenience and comfort not only to Kuching people but also visitors from outside.

“Cooperation from the private sector is the catalyst to move economic development and encourage visitors to come to Kuching,” he said at the MoU signing ceremony between CMS Land Sdn Bhd and Projek Bandar Samariang Sdn Bhd with well-known hypermarket Mydin Mohamed Holdings yesterday.

Mydin Mohamed Holdings is set to develop two Mydin hypermarkets in Kuching, located at Bandar Samariang and the Isthmus.

Abang Johari, who is also the Housing Minister, said the agreement between the companies is a welcomed move.

“Their agreement will boost the retail business in Kuching, allowing more use of the retail facilities and job opportunities.

“Domestic investment from homegrown companies like Mydin is important.

“Mydin has a very practical concept, which allows small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to sell their products within their outlets in a contemporary and conducive setting.

“This is good opportunity for local SMEs such as kek lapis producers or craftsmakers to showcase their products in Mydin outlets, if Mydin expands outside Malaysia next time,” he noted.

Abang Johari said private retail companies should embrace the modern concept of shopping.

“There should be more than just four-storey commercial shoplots. They need to provide proper parking areas and accurate signage for the convenience of their customers.

“I’m proud to see the contemporary design of Mydin and its product offerings,” he said.

On the tourism development, Abang Johari said plans are in place to create a river taxi system, whereby shoppers to Mydin on the Isthmus can travel on the Sarawak River to Medan Niaga Satok for more shopping.

“It will be an attractive shopping experience along the Sarawak River,” he pointed out.

The two Mydin outlets are expected to complete by middle of next year.

The development at Bandar Samariang Commercial Centre will occupy 8.1-acre site adjacent to Jalan Sultan Tengah, while the one at the Isthmus will occupy a prime 6.69-acre site opposite the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

Also present at the MoU signing ceremony were assistant Housing Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd group managing director Dato Richard Curtis, Cahya Mata Sarawak executive director Datuk Syed Ahmad Alwee Asree, Mydin Mohamed Holdings managing director Datuk Wira Dr Ameer Ali Mydin and Mydin Holdings executive director Murad Ali Mydin Muhamad.

Mydin: Big plans for Sarawak’s retail market

by Justin Yap, justinyap@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 15, 2013, Tuesday

SET TO GO: CMS group managing director Datuk Richard Curtis (second left) exchanging agreements with Mydin managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin during the signing ceremony held yesterday. Looking on are Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg (centre), CMS group executive director Datuk Syed Ahmad Alwee Alsree (left) and Mydin executive director Murad Ali Mydin.

KUCHING: Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin) will penetrate the Sarawakian retail market with an investment of about RM150 million for the two hypermarkets set to be in operational by the second half of 2014.

Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) yesterday hosted two signing ceremonies – a head of agreement between Mydin and CMS Land Sdn Bhd for a new hypermarket at The Isthmus as well as a lease agreement between Mydin and Project Bandar Semariang Sdn Bhd for another hypermarket to be located in Bandar Semariang.

Managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin told The Borneo Post that, apart from the two Mydin hypermarkets in Kuching, the team was also in the midst of identifying potential sites in Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

When asked if the plan would be realised within the next two years, he pointed out that it was not about the time period, but looking for the right prime location in cities and towns that matter the most.

“It takes only 18 months to construct and fully set up a hypermarket. If we get the right place today, you will see it by the middle of next year,” he added.

Apart from the two locations aforementioned, Mydin was also looking forward to setting up a ‘bigger’ type of hypermarket at Vista Tunku, Petra Jaya, which was expected to be in operational by the second half of 2015.

“It will be big but in terms of warehousing and not retail,” Ameer elaborated.

“We need a ‘mothership’ when we opened Mydin hypermarkets because we import a lot of goods from overseas.”

In terms of logistics, he pointed out that it would be very expensive having goods from China, India or Thailand going to Port Klang, being routed to Sarawak.

“All the imported goods will go to our retail warehouse at Tunku Vista and would be distributed to all Mydin outlets throughout Sarawak,” he added.

The development of Mydin hypermarket located at Bandar Semariang occupied a prime 8.1 acre site adjacent to the existing Jalan Sultan Tengah, while the one at The Isthmus would occupy a prime 6.69 acre site adjacent to the existing Jalan Keruing.

“It is very important for the people to know that Mydin, being local grown always understand customers better. Wherever we go, we always allocate a substantial part of the space for the local market,” Ameer concluded.

Mydin has grown to be the largest local Bumiputra retailer and wholesaler since 1957 with 186 branches nationwide, expanding at a rate of five hypermarkets annually.

Mydin spreading its wings to Sarawak

By Desmond Davidson
Published: 2013/01/15

MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Bhd, which recorded a turnover of RM2.1 billion last year, targets RM2.5 billion this year, and is investing RM150 million to open three hypermarkets here.

The hypermarkets are at Vista Tunku and Bandar Baru Samariang in Petra Jaya and at the Isthmus in the Demak Laut industrial area.

Construction of the hypermarkets has begun with the market in Vista Tunku, designated a "mothership" by Mydin's managing director Da-tuk Ameer Ali Mydin, targeted for completion in the middle of next year.

The other two are to be completed in 2015.

The state's largest conglomerate, Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMSB) invited Mydin to open two of the hypermarkets - at Bandar Baru Samariang and the Isthmus.

Ameer told journalists after signing two agreements - a lease agreement and heads of agreement with Projek Bandar Samariang Sdn Bhd and CMS Land Sdn Bhd respectively yesterday - said the openings are long-term projects.

Projek Bandar Samariang is a wholly owned subsidiary of CMSB while CMS Land is a joint-venture company between CMSB and the Sarawak Economic Development Corp (SEDC).

Ameer also said Mydin is also "seriously" looking into opening similar hypermarkets in the major towns of Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

"There is a lot of potential there (the towns)," he said after the signing ceremony that was witnessed by State Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Datuk Richard Curtis, group managing director of CMSB, said bringing in Mydin was a "win-win situation for everybody".

"We hoped to help them expand in other parts of the state," he added.

"In attracting Mydin to Isthmus and Bandar Samariang, we had to meet some tough criteria, such as land availability for the development, community population size and that we had to have a clear vision of development for these two areas."

The rapidly growing integrated township of Bandar Samariang is now home to over 25,000 people.

That, Curtis said, "more than meets the community size development requirements".

The Bandar Samariang hypermarket would be sited on a prime 3ha site at the Bandar Samariang commercial centre.

The single-storey development would have a total floor area of 10,777 sq m - about 4,000 sq m for the hypermarket, 1,514 sq m of mall space and 603.87 sq m for the food court.

The hypermarket at the Isthmus is larger - a two-storey building with a total floor space area of 28,568 sq m. The hypermarket takes up 5,862 sq m.

老实说三间的工程都延迟了一年时间,不过已确定Supermall和三马连霸市会在2016年之前开业。Supermall进展已达70%;三马连霸市则开始建造底层。
