Texchem to expand this year
By DAVID TAN
PENANG: Texchem Resources Bhd plans to expand its food and family care business divisions this year.
The plans include a seafood production facility in Tanjung Manis, Sarawak, an aquaculture project in Langkawi, and the establishment of seven more Sushi King outlets in the country, chairman and chief executive officer Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi said.

The group was allocating about RM40mil this year and in 2009 to set up a seafood processing facility and fishing trawling operations in Tanjung Manis, Sarawak.
“This would be a joint venture with the Sarawak State Economic Development Corp, in which Texchem will hold a 51% stake.
“We have secured a four-acre site for the seafood processing facility and the licences to operate five fishing trawlers in Sarawak,” Konishi said.
He said the group was invited by the state government to invest in Tanjung Manis, which had to date received over RM300mil in investments in essential port facilities.
In Langkawi, Texchem plans to launch an aquaculture project on a 10ha site.
“The plan is to farm grouper, sea bass and tilapia fish for export and supply raw ingredients for our seafood processing subsidiaries.
“We are now working on the cost of initial investment,” Konishi said, adding that in the past 18 months, the group had undertaken cost rationalisation to reduce losses at its seafood production facilities in Myanmar.
In 2006 the food division, which contributes over 20% of the group’s revenue, posted a loss before tax of RM7.4mil, due mainly to the high consumption of diesel at the Myanmar operation.
Last year, as a result of the cost rationalisation, Texchem’s food division broke even and Konishi expects the division to deliver profits this year.
“By 2010, the food division could be expected to generate 30% of group revenue,” he said.
Texchem is also allocating RM7mil to set up seven Sushi King outlets this year in Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Bintulu and in the Klang Valley.
Two new Sushi King outlets were opened in Kuching earlier this month, bringing the total number of outlets in the country to 43.
For the family care division, Konishi said the group was drawing up plans to invest in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City.
“Some RM20mil will be invested initially in the Vietnam facility, which should be ready for operation at the end of the year.
“The facility will have the capacity to produce one billion mosquito coils a year for the South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan markets,” he said.
