1) The different region signify where the game is being made for. R1 = US
R2 = Europe
R3 = Asia (SG/MSIA/HK/KOREA/JAP)
R4 = Australia & Oceania
2) There is no difference in the game itself, and NO MATTER WHERE YOUR PS3 IS FROM, IT CAN PLAY ALL REGION GAMES!
3) The main difference why people sometimes prefer regions over one another is because it sometimes the DOWNLOADABLE CONTENTS differ from each region. Also, most fellow LYN's prefer R1 and R3 games is because it is easier to find ways to purchase the DLC. (eg R1 can use US PSN card, R3 can use local credit cards, R2 PSN cards hard to find and cannot accept local credit cards)
4) Different region games MAY OR MAY NOT be able to play with each other (Global vs Region-Locked Server). For example, Little Big Planet (GLOBAL SERVER) is on a global server, so no matter which region you buy, you can still play with one another online, but for Winning Eleven 09 (REGION-LOCKED SERVER), if you own a R1 copy, you can only play with people who owns the R1 copy.
