Monk shuns Jatukam
Despite the craze for Jatukam Ramathep amulets amongBuddhists, revered monk Luang Phor Khoon Parisuttho yesterday reiterated thathe would have nothing to do with the Hindu-based talismans.
"I have said and still insist that I will not produceor bless Jatukams. I have no reason to do so. I have never even had a notion todo so. To those who plan to ask me for sacred substances to make Jatukams,please give up the idea. I have nothing to give," Luangpor Khoon saidwhile recovering at Maharat Korat Hospital.
Rumours have circulated among Jatukam fans that someversions of the talisman will include secret materials from Luang Phor Khoon's Ban Rai Temple. Sacred materialsin talismans is a main factor in their popularity.
The Jatukam fad was worth Bt20 billion in May.
Tawach Ruangrai, manager of Ban Rai Temple, said the temple had also triedto clarify its stance on Jatukam by putting up banners containing its message.
"But people still keep asking," he said.
The abbot was hospitalised on Wednesday for symptoms ofblood poisoning. His condition has visibly improved, and he should return tothe temple on Monday, his doctor said.

Jatukam News
Boxes of Jatukam Ramathep amulets areunloaded from trucks for blessing at the Mahathat Woramahawiharn Temple in Nakhon SiThammarat.
Locals yesterday complained the pagoda had developed alean as a result of vehicles arriving at the temple each day with the amulets.
Lorries and pickup vehicles deliver the amulets to themonastery's compound, where they are blessed in consecration rituals. Thecenturies-old pagoda houses Buddha relics.
"We have to do something before further damage isdone," Somchoke Boonwisut, a Nakhon Si Thammarat resident, said yesterday.
Residents will ask provincial governor Wichom Thongsong totake action to halt damage to the pagoda.
Local Fine Arts Department director Banjong Wongwichiensaid experts were on the way to examine the pagoda. "But, for the timebeing, everything depends on the temple abbot," he said.
Nakhon Si Thammarat deputy governor Somsak Khamtaweepromwill have talks with abbot Phra Ratchathamsuthee ahead of any action atprovincial level.
Revenue officials wanting to know how much the temple wasmaking from the amulets yesterday visited the abbot.
Provincial police chief Maj-General Sudjai Yannaratpraised residents' efforts to protect the pagoda. Officers have been sent tothe temple for security.
Sudjai said many vehicles "sneak into the temple ataround 3am and 4am before traffic officers are present".
Provincial public works chief Chaiyapat Siriprasert saidit would be easy to determine if the pagoda was leaning but added hisdepartment was too busy to check and suggested an academic institute shouldhelp.
