Bastian Schweinsteiger to sue Chinese toy firm over Nazi doll doppelgänger

Bastian Schweinsteiger is taking legal action against a Chinese toy company after it produced a Nazi doll which looks suspiciously like the Manchester United midfielder and is even called “Bastian”.

The German newspaper Bild first highlighted the resemblance between Die Mannschaft captain and the doll – which has been produced by Hong Kong-based firm DiD Corporation – in an article earlier this week. It quoted a spokesman from the company, who said that any resemblance with Schweinsteiger was a “complete coincidence”.

“We don’t sell any figures which resemble footballers. It is a complete coincidence that the figure ‘Bastian’ looks like Schweinsteiger,” the spokesman Patrick Chan said.

“We think that all Germans look like that. Bastian is also a very common name in Germany.”

Despite the denial, Schweinsteiger’s management company is clearly not impressed. A spokesman for 31-year-old, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, confirmed he was taking legal action.

“This is a clear violation of Schweinsteiger’s personality rights,” the media lawyer Ulrich Amelung was quoted as saying by Bild. “To see him as a swastika-bearing Wehrmacht soldier also constitutes a gross defamation and insult.”

The report states that, in similar cases, damages have amounted to “six-figure sums”.
