TEXCHEM Resources Bhd will add five more Sushi King outlets to its network of 41 eateries in Mal ...
Shogun Japanese Buffet Restaurant

14-05-2007: Texchem opens Japanese fine dining in Penang
By Regina William in Penang
Twelve years after opening the first Sushi King restaurant in the Klang Valley and with more than three million customers having dined at the 41 outlets throughout the country, Texchem Resources Bhd — which runs the chain of restaurants — has opened its first fine dining Japanese restaurant, Miraku, located at the G Hotel in Penang.
Miraku, which means a great place for customers to enjoy great food, is dedicated to Sushi King’s loyal customers whom Texchem chairman and chief executive officer Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi (pic) described as ready to “graduate” into Japanese fine dining.
Armed with the best chefs brought in from Japan, the outlet, with a total area of more than 4,568sq ft can accommodate 130 customers at any one time.
“If this restaurant is successful here, as Penang is a very difficult place to open a new restaurant, we believe we can survive anywhere else in the country.
“We will definitely open an outlet in the Klang Valley if we do well here and we hope to popularise Japanese culture via our fine dining concept at Miraku.
“From Sushi King, which is more of a fast food concept but family oriented, we have learnt from our mistakes and we are ready to offer our faithful customers top-class quality in every sense, from taste, presentation, ambience, environment and service but at a very reasonable price,” Konishi said.
The outlet, with an investment of RM2 million is expected to generate RM400,000 in income every month.
If Konishi has his way, there will be Sushi King outlets in every major town in Malaysia, making Sushi King a “truly Malaysian brand”.
“We are opening two outlets in the Klang Valley namely near KL Sentral, Mont Kiara, another in Klang Jusco and one in Bandar Perda (in Seberang Perai, Penang).
“We have just opened one outlet in Batu Pahat (Johor) which is doing very well despite the fact that it is located in a countryside area compared to the other outlets which are in major shopping complexes.
“We are very dependent on external factors as we open our outlets at shopping complexes and hence we cannot simply open outlets at any other locations,” said Konishi.
Meanwhile, Sushi Kin Sdn Bhd managing director Yasuhiro Nishida said plans are afoot for Sushi King restaurants to start operations in East Malaysia namely in Kuching, Sarawak, by the end of this year.
“We are currently negotiating with the relevant parties and our first outlet will open at a major shopping complex which is still under construction there. We are also planning to expand to Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), Kedah, Pahang and even Kelantan but it also depends on when the shopping complexes and malls come up there,” he said.
Nishida said Sushi Kin spends RM7 million each year to open up new outlets and also to refurbish existing ones.
