Sudirman Cup - A Sporting Moment For England

England enters the history book of the Sudirman Cup after defeating Thailand 1-4 in the final group tie and joins big guns China, Korea and Indonesia in the semi-finals for the first time.

By Jan Lin, reporting live from Glasgow, Scotland. Photos: Badmintonphoto.com

There was additional historical significance to the 2007 Sudirman Cup World Teams Championship as at least one nation in Group 1A was bound to make its virgin entry into the list of semi-finalists.

As the group stages came to a close yesterday, the verdict was out: England, who defeated Malaysia and Thailand, had emerged as the runner-up in Group 1A to secure its first top 4 finish ever in the Sudirman Cup.

England’s mixed doubles pair of Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms, who won the gold medal in the World Championships in Madrid last year, got England off to a phenomenal start by ousting Thailand’s world number 3 in a thrilling three-setter 19-21, 21-16, 21-17.

This definitely set England on track for victory even as Andrew Smith dropped his game against the Singapore Super Series champion Boonsak Ponsana (pictured right). Tracey Hallam was impressive in her quest to secure the 2nd and crucial point against Boonsak’s sister, Salakjit Ponsana, in the women singles event 21-13, 21-18.

Salakjit came very close to pushing the match to a tiebreaker as she began to understand Hallam’s game towards the second half of the second game but Hallam maintained her exceptionally clever play to disappoint the Thais.

I was a bit surprised being in that position and thought about it too much and errors started coming back in”, said Hallam who played a highly accurate and consistent first game stretching Salakjit to the four corners of the court.

English head coach Ian Wright added that “the mixed doubles’ win was the key [to our overall win] today as their win took a lot of pressure off Tracey, who could then go on to play more relaxed”.

The English needed just one more point from either of their doubles to see them through but both the men's and women’s doubles, which had been instrumental to their defeat of Malaysia, decided that two is always better than one.

The scratch men's doubles pair of Songphon Anugritayawon and Tesana Panvisavas of Thailand did give the English a slight scare, especially when they took the second game 21-18. But the English pair of Anthony Clark and Robert Blair (pictured left) rediscovered their winning touch to silence the Thais 21-9 in the tiebreaker and England marched on into the semi-finals.

The experienced English pair of Gail Emms and Donna Kellogg then extended England’s lead by confidently taking out Thailand’s 23-year-olds Duanganong Aroonkesorn and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul 21-14, 21-18 in the shortest match of the England-Thailand tie.

A beaming Ian Wright, head coach of the English team, said at a post-match press conference “a lot of bigger countries thought we were lucky in [the 2006 World Championships in] Madrid to get all those medals, but now this shows that we are improving and we are beginning to compete right at the top level.

There was a lot of pressure for us in this match. Had we lost 3-2, we would be playing the relegation match against Hong Kong and we did have very nervous matches in the mixed doubles and men's doubles matches but we had good mental strength to come through to win it.

England Killing Two Birds With One Stone

England’s first march into the Sudirman Cup semi-finals may be a historical moment for English badminton. This coupled with the fact that the English have actually displaced their European nemesis Denmark from arriving at a 10th consecutive semi-final berth, has made their successful outing at the 2007 Sudirman Cup doubly special.

Ian Wright (pictured right), who considered England's draw a tough one before the Championship kicked off said, “When we got the draw we were disappointed because we saw the seed and clearly wanted to be in Denmark’s group because we, England, always wanted to play Denmark but in the end to win big medals we will have to beat Asian countries and Asian players.
So there is a rivalry between England and Denmark but we are looking a bit higher. We are looking to compete at world level -- that is our objective. We came through an all-Asian group which I think is another positive sign for England badminton.

England will now play the 1989 Champion Indonesia in the semi-finals and the English are keeping a positive spirit about it.

I think on paper, Indonesia looks very good and I think people in the badminton world will look at England-Indonesia and think that Indonesia will win, so I think the pressure is on Indonesia.

We had no goals coming to this Championship. We just wanted to play as best as we could and so far I think we managed to do that,” explained Ian Wright, who also emphasised that all his players have a very positive attitude and encouraging team spirit coming into this tournament, which yields zero monetary incentive and their only motivation is just to keep English badminton going.

England’s recent employment of former Malaysian player and Korean team men’s doubles coach Tan Kim Her has already been instrumental in getting the English ahead in this Asian-dominated sport, according to Ian Wright. Tan Kim Her is a very, very good coach. As good as any men’s doubles coach in the world. I’m very happy to have him.

He is a very good communicator and our players are very appreciative of him. He made them work very, very hard on the court and he makes the effort to talk to them before and after the sessions and the players have very, very high respect of him.

In explaining the absence of Tan at the 2007 Sudirman Cup, Ian Wright said “He has been very surprised by the amount of young talent we have at the National Centre. He is very happy with the young players and did not want them to be without a coach. But we will be dragging him to Kuala Lumpur for the World Championship!

The English, who won gold and silver medals in the mixed doubles events and a silver medal in the men's doubles event at the World Championships in Madrid last year, are clearly hungry to repeat their success and are gunning for more at this year's World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. So beware Malaysia, England may be out to spoil your party once more.
