The latest revision to the Waja as scooped earlier thisweekisthenewProton Waja Campro 1.6 Premium (CPS) as itisofficiallycalled,andthese are the official details.
Let’s have a look at the equipment level first before wegettothejuicyCPS stuff. The Waja Campro 1.6 Premium (CPS) comeswitheithera5-speed manual gearboxora4-speedauto.It has electrically foldable remote wingmirrors,frontseatswiththree-way adjustable headrests (up, down andtilt),leatherseatsallaround, a gated automatic shifter for the automatic transmission model, new center panel switches, a keyless trunk remote system, ABS brakes, dual SRS airbags, fog lamps, twin tailpipes and projector Xenon headlamps with automatic headlamp levelling.
Perhapsthemostinteresting update to this Premium CPS Waja islikeitsnamesake,theCampro CPS engine. This engine has beeneagerlyawaited bymany, asthecurrent Campro has often been referred tothe“Camprowithout Campro”-there was no cam profile switchinginvolved.With thenew S4PH CamproCPS,there is.
This is how the new Proton Campro CPS works. The CPS system integrated both cam profile switching (CPS) and a variable intake manifold(VIM).VIMswitchesbetweena long intake manifold at low RPMs and ashortintakemanifold athigherRPMs. According to Proton, a longerintakemanifold isused at lowRPMs toachieve slower air flow; thispromotesbetter mixingwith fuel.The shortintake manifold allows moreair infaster. This isbeneficial athigh RPMs.This seems to beslightlydifferent compared tothe usual VIMsystem whereintakemanifold widthis also varied tocontrol air velocity,andvelocitytries to bemaximised, but the ideabehind the CPS VIM seemsto benotwanting theair to go in as fast aspossible at low revstopromoteair-fuelmixture? Whatever it is, itseems to work, as theVIMdoes notstandalone but works with all theother enginesystemstogetheroverdifferent RPMs.
TheCPSsystemuses a switching tappet and a trilobe camshafttoswitchbetweentwodifferent cam profiles. One cam profile provideslowvalvelift, whiletheother cam profile has a high valve lift. Thelowvalvelift camprofile isused at engine speeds of under 3,800rpmtomaintainidlingsmoothness andensure lower emissions, while thehighlift camprofile isused when theengine is spinning more than3,800rpmtoimprove peakhorsepower and torque.
Using this two performance-improving systems, Campro CPS engine basically runs in three modes at any one time:
Engine Speed CPS VIM
0 to 3,800rpm Low Lift Long Runner
3,800rpm to 4,800rpm High Lift Long Runner
Above 4,800rpm High Lift Short Runner
Theresultis125horsepower (93kW) at 6,500rpm and 150Nm of torqueat4,500rpmcomparedtothe non-CPS Campro’s 110 horsepower (82kW)at6,000rpm and148Nm oftorqueat 4,000rpm. Engine displacementis1,597cc, bore andstroke is76mm x 88mmand the compression ratiois10.0:1. To handle thehigherpower and torqueoutput, the CamproCPSengine has an additional oil cooler.

Theinteriorfeaturesa new meter panel and a new head-unitcapableofplaying CDs, MP3files andWMA files. The automatic versionhas a new gated shifter, but you cannot see it here as this is the interior of the manual version.
