1. Vowel is the vocal sound made without audible stopping of the breath.

2. Please repeat after the pauses

3. It is to produce the sound as twice the length of the short vowel.

4. Union of two vowel sounds or vowel letters

5. Speech sound produced by a complete or partial stoppage of breath. Usually it changes with the movement of lips, tongue or breath.

6. The Bats

BRIAN: Hi. Nice cave you have here.

LUCY: Thank you.

BRIAN: Is it yours?

JOHN: No, we rent it.

MARY: We used to live in a cave.

JOHN: Really?

MARY: Yes. But we don't live in a cave any more. We live in a tower.

BRIAN: It's very nice.

JOHN: We used to live in a tower. But we moved.

MARY: Why?

JOHN: It was cold.

LUCY: And it was noisy.

JOHN: So we came to this cave.
             It's warm...

LUCY: And it's quiet...

MARY: But it's dark!

BRIAN: And it is wet!

JOHN: You're right... but we like it, don't we, dear?

7. A Postman in Docklands

"When  Docklands was really thriving many years ago, they used to have whole estates and rows and streets of houses which were all for dockers or related industries. All the people lived there. They had a very close-knit community spirit.
And they certainly used to make all their own entertainment. And they used to organise trips; you know, days down to the seaside and things like that. And there used to be social clubs, for instance, where they had dances on Saturday nights and things, and various parties for the children.
You'll still find in some of the old streets - where the dockers used to live many years ago - in those old cottages, you find a better spirit of community than you do in modern flats. It doesn't seem to have a soul any more, just straight brick and mortar and that's it; it's lost its spirit."

"You Are the Apple of My Eye"

An apple a day, keeps doctor away"。

You are the apple of my eye,意思就是指說:你是我的摯愛,或是同等意思。

"the apple of one's eye"這個表達法早在公元885年,艾爾弗雷德大帝(King Alfred (the Great) of Wessex)用古英語寫就的文章Gregory's Pastoral Care中就出現了。
古英語原文:[hwæt on eæs siwenigean eagum beoe ea æpplas hale, ac ea bræwas greatigae, foream hie beoe oft drygde for eæm tearum ee eær gelome of flowae, oeeæt sio scearpnes bie gewird eæs æpples.]

“Flower of this purple dye,
Hit with Cupid’s archery,
Sink in apple of his eye."

“the apple of one’s eye” 在《欽定版聖經》(King James Version,1611) 年中也多次出現:
•《申命記》( Deuteronomy ,32:10)

原句為[He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.]
(The Book of Psalms 17:8)

[Keep me as the apple of thy eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings]
(Proverbs 7:2)

[Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.]
(Lamentations 2: 18)

[Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.]
(Zechariah 2:8)

[For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.]

(Sir Walter Scott's Old Mortality, 1816):
"Poor Richard was to me as an eldest son, the apple of my eye."

The Apple of Ones' Eye的字面意思是“某人眼裡的蘋果”,在這裡,apple指的是the pupil(瞳孔,眼珠),大概因眼珠圓的象蘋果之故。 所以,這個成語常用來比喻象愛護眼珠一樣愛護某個最心愛的人或珍貴的東西,即表示a cherished person or object;sth extremely precious to one; sb dearly loved等意。
