EA旗下著名的RPG大厂BioWare工作室与星战版权所有人卢卡斯电艺联合宣布，将为PC平台的玩家奉献一款名为《星球大战：旧共和国》（Star Wars：The Old Republic）的网络游戏，时间背景设定在BioWare曾于04年发售的单机RPG游戏《星战：旧共和国武士》（KOTOR）之后300年，即同名电影（系列）之前3500年：

“我们（等于是）在开发KOTOR3、4、5、6、7……以及无数续作，该作规模宏大，装得下许多内容”，BioWare创始成员之一的Ray Muzyka表示说，“它极富新意，游戏基于情节驱动模式。”

据IGN的报道，制作单位招募了12名全职写手为该作进行了数年的内容创作，玩家在游戏中可扮演绝地武士或西斯任何一方，每方都有不同的职业/种族，各职业/种族都有其独特的故事背景——“并不是每个人都有天行者卢克那样的童年”。

该作首席设计师James Ohlen对此解释道：
“玩家在游戏中面临许多抉择——派系、种族、善恶，这些决定了个人冒险历程该如何展开。”

该作还允许玩家选择同伴，就像以前的KOTOR单机游戏那样；玩家在游戏中可进行PvP、PvE和RvR（阵营对抗），外加Raid支持。

开发方宣称该作目前已实际可玩，但发布会上未见试玩演示，只用一段预渲染的预告片来代替；该作的发布日期仍不清楚，但确认会有公测，正式上线据说要到明年某个时候。

近日，由卢卡斯公司授权，Bioware担纲制作的星球大战题材网游《星球大战：旧共和国》放出了游戏背景故事的介绍视频第三辑“曼达洛瑞恩的回归”（The Return of Mandalorian）以及两张玩家原画。视频中简要介绍了曼达洛瑞恩部族的历史，在大西斯战争（Great Sith War）中所扮演的角色以及之后的事件。

在星球大战故事的设定中，曼达洛瑞恩是一个类似斯巴达人的战斗部族，他们从小就训练有素，能熟练的使用各种武器，穿着防护力很高的护甲，是全宇宙最好的战士。他们从不臣服于任何势力，而仅仅是为了寻求挑战而加入到战争中去。

3月31号，Bioware将会公布今年的推出日期。

Everyone at BioWare and EA is working to ensure that Star Wars: The Old Republic is delivered at the quality level you expect from BioWare and Star Wars.

‪Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected to launch this year after the close of EA's fiscal 2011 (which ends March 31st, 2011). Information on the release date and pre-order programs will be released as it becomes available.
