Lions fall three spots to No. 165 in FIFA rankings
Singapore crashed out of the group stage of the AFF Suzuki Cup after losing 1-2 to Indonesia.
SINGAPORE - The Singapore national football team has dropped further down the South-east Asian pecking order, according to the FIFA rankings which were released on Thursday (Dec 22).
The Lions, who were ranked 162nd last month, fell three spots to 165th, below the likes of the Philippines (120), Thailand (126), Vietnam (134), Myanmar (159) and Malaysia (162). Just below the Republic are Laos at 167.
Singapore were ranked fifth in the region last month at No 162, but Myanmar, who were No 168, have since overtaken them.
November was a month to forget for V. Sundramoorthy's Lions. After scrappping a 1-0 home win over Cambodia in their final international friendly in preparation for the Suzuki Cup, the Republic crashed out of the group stages of the Asean Football Federation's Suzuki Cup for the second tournament running.
The Lions began their Suzuki Cup campaign by holding co-hosts Philippines to a 0-0 draw in their opening group game. But they suffered heartbreak against Thailand despite a solid all-out defensive effort when the War Elephant scored the only goal of the game in the final minutes.
Needing a win against Indonesia to give themselves a fighting chance of advancing into the semi-finals, Singapore took the lead when striker Khairul Amri scored from a spectacular scissors-kick volley. But the Indonesians staged a remarkable comeback to steal a 2-1 win that sent the Lions packing.
The string of results - one draw and two defeats - was also Singapore's worst showing in the biennial regional tournament since it started in 1996. Amri's goal was also the only one that Singapore scored in three matches.
Indonesia and Thailand eventually advanced all the way to the final which Thailand won 3-2 on aggregate to lift the Suzuki Cup for a record fifth time.
Singapore's next international assignment will be to try to qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup finals for the first time. The draw for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round will be held on Jan 23 2017, and Singapore's first game will be on March 28.
