ST REWRITE HISTORY SAYS SR NATHAN WAS 1ST ELECTED PRESIDENT

Dear A.S.S,

I find it atrocious that Straits Times published a report like this!

No disrespect to S R Nathan but Singapore's first elected president is Ong Teng Cheong. He served from 1 September 1993 to 31 August 1999.

Not only are the editors incompetent, they treat Singaporeans like idiots!

Even if they intend to carry balls, this is not the way to do it.

Straits Times should not try to rewrite history!

Presidency
Ong was diagnosed with cancer of the lymphatic system in 1992. He became Singapore's first elected President a year later,[12] and it was a presidency marked by many charitable projects (the largest of which is the President's Star Charity, an annual event initiated by Ong).

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Singapore

The President of the Republic of Singapore is Singapore's head of state. In a Westminster parliamentary system, as which Singapore governs itself, the prime minister is the head of the government while the position of president is largely ceremonial. Before 1993, the President of Singapore was chosen by Parliament. Following amendments to the constitution enacted in 1991, the Presidency became a popularly-elected office. The first President elected by the majority of the people was Ong Teng Cheong, who served from 1 September 1993 to 31 August 1999. The current President of Singapore is Tony Tan Keng Yam.

Eagle-eyed netizen caught man lying to Straits Times about S R Nathan

Please think before speaking and publishing.

The Straits Times and Today both reported about Singaporeans who got up bright and early to pay their respects to the late S R Nathan at the Istana.

ST interviewed one Lin Rong Xiang, a self-employed computer engineer, who apparently took the first train to get to the Istana. Here’s what he said that caught the attention of one eagle-eyed Hardwarezone Forum user:

Mr Nathan was our President for two terms and each time he ran uncontested; so there was no election. He was the sole candidate deemed qualified by the Presidential Elections Committee in the 1999 and 2005 Presidential Elections.

Therefore Lin’s claim that he voted for Mr Nathan stuck out like a sore thumb.

This spurred blogger Alvinology to share the screenshot and call Lin out on his remarks.

ST has since removed Lin’s quote from its article.

Netizens have dug up details about Lin, including the fact that Lin posted screenshots of a Channel 8 News report featuring him paying respects to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew last year.

(Edit: We mistakenly mentioned that it was ST and CNA which reported on people paying respects at the Istana. It should have been ST and Today)
