'Am Singaporean Indian Muslim, but because my mother tongue is Malay, most Chinese friends would assume I'm Malay. But that's not the racism bit, I don't fault them as it is pretty confusing haha.
The racism bit happened during a discussion about A Level History (we were going through Inter State Tensions, and we were discussing about the comments made by then General Lee Hsien Loong that there was a deliberate lack of Malays in the SAF due to concerns of them choosing between Nation or Religion/Race).
I was asked by a classmate of mine (Chinese) whether I would defend Singapore if we were at War with Malaysia. She was genuinely asking and wanted me to answer. I was taken aback because my loyalty towards my nation was being questioned for the first time in my life. I would not call it deliberate racism on her part but because of the notion she has or was brought up with, it led her to question my loyalty.
I just told her that if Singaporean Malays can fight Malaysian Malays during a football match, what more during a war?'
