Tesco Malaysia Spends RM40 Million To Subsidise Price Of Goods


KLANG, May 9 (Bernama) -- Tesco Stores Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Tesco Malaysia) has invested RM40 million to subsidise the price of 300 consumer products in conjunction with the recently-launched "Every Day Low Prices" campaign, nationwide.

Chief Executive Officer Georg Fischer said the campaign, launched on May 1, was a long-term initiative by the company to help customers enjoy up to 30 per cent price savings on daily products.

"It is a significant investment because as a retailer, we always listen to our customers. We invested to reduce the price of the selected products in order to make them affordable.

"Customer feedback has shown that they were not thrilled with short-term discounts and promotions, so this campaign will only end February next year," he told reporters after launching the campaign at Tesco Extra in Bukit Tinggi, here.

He also said the investment was internally funded and the company has tied-up with suppliers to source cheaper alternatives.

On the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that would be implemented on April 1, 2015, Georg said Tesco Malaysia would remain the leader in low prices.

He added the GST would not pressure Tesco Malaysia to ensure low prices for customers, but it was the responsibility of the government to keep prices of goods at its lowest especially essential products.

"We are definitely conscious of the impending GST, so we are working very closely with the government. Even with the GST, we will ensure that we are still leading in terms of lowest prices as our customers are our priority," he said.

Georg added that Tesco Malaysia had also invested RM200 million to upgrade its existing outlets and build four new hypermarkets in Kedah, Selangor, Johor and Melaka that would create jobs for 2,000 people.
