The levels of nuclear radiation around Fukushima’s No. 1 plant have risen to 8 millisieverts per year, surpassing the government standard of 1 milliseviert per year, reports news site Asahi Shimbun citing Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

The Nuclear Regulation Authority held a meeting on Friday aimed at curbing the rising levels of radiation to the south of the plant, which has long been a problem area.

TEPCO told press that the predominant reason behind the sharp increase in radiation at the plant was X-rays coming from storage tanks holding radioactive water that has been leaking from the Fukushima facility.

The water in the tanks contains traces of radioactive strontium along with other substances that react with the materials the tank is composed of, producing X-rays, said officials.

Strontium-90 is a radioactive isotope of strontium produced by nuclear fission with a half-life of 28.8 years.

Radioactive water leaking from the nuclear site at Fukushima has been a pressing concern to the international community, as well as the Japanese population since the outbreak of the crisis in March 2011.

After the discovery of water leaks from the Fukushima plant’s underwater tanks, TEPCO has been siphoning off the contaminated liquid and storing it in tanks.

In an attempt to neutralize the stored water, TEPCO is using a system known as the Advanced Liquid Processing System, or ALPS. The system itself is composed of 14 steel cylinders through which the radioactive water is filtered. The radioactive sludge left behind after the water is cleaned is then transferred to high-integrity containers which are in turn transported to a secure storage facility.

TEPCO plans to clean up all of the tainted water through ALPS by the end of March 2015, but the operation has already run into some difficulties. On Tuesday the crane that lifts the containers to and from the ALPS system stopped working for several days before resuming on Friday.

The Japanese government has so far shelled out $473 million to contain the fallout from the beleaguered plant. Officials have also criticized TEPCO’s “whack-a-mole” to dealing with the nuclear crisis.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has put forward the idea of divided the contamination operation between TEPCO and the government. Under the proposal TEPCO would hand over the water purifying operation and the decommissioning of the reactors to a government-affiliated organization, thus allowing the electric power company to concentrate on its management and compensation payments.

If something similar would've happened in North Korea for ex. the mainstream media would be relentlessly on top of it day in day out. But with Fukushima they try to avoid it as much as they can. You know, not to alarm people... That's not good for business... The multinational corporations are heavily invested in Japan...

Sea life in the Pacific ocean is dying at record rates. Geiger counters are reading up to 1400% above normal radiation on San Francisco area beaches. The US government just ordered 14 million doses of Potassium Iodide to fight radiation sickness. Tepco and the Japanese government have been caught lying about the Fukushima radiation levels several times, and are now using homeless people to fix the reactors with duct tape. Yep, nothng to see here. Move along. Drink some more fluoride and watch a Miley Cyrus video. Officials say there is nothing to worry about, and we know we can always trust what they say.

Fukushima is a disaster, it is unbelievable they only spent half a billion dollars to clean it up so far, yet there is nothing quite so cowardly selfish & repugnant, as an American depleted uranium bomber of Iraq, nuker of Japan, who cares only about his or her self in this matter of Japanese SURVIVAL. Plus the sky's falling buddy, and you're full of it.

Evidently you are not intelligent enough to have understood the sarcasm in my post. This is not only about Japanese survival, but survival of the entire human race. I say you are 'full of it' if you think otherwise.

Peoples concerns are understandable, but before we declare a nightmare scenario we should be sure that the claims made cannot be easily rebutted otherwise news fatigue amongst the public will soon set in. Firstly, can these results be replicated on other North American beaches from say, Vancouver to Baja California, and if not, why not? It possible to match the radionuclides present in the water in California with those present around Fukushima to give some correlation?

The media black-out regarding Fukushima at the moment says it all. There are hardly any worthwhile mainstream media news segments running on British TV (also no Syria stories now the western powers are not going to get their way). Governments have form when it comes to down-playing events such as these. It is therefore difficult to predict what the outcome to this disaster will be as no official agencies can be trusted. What is certain, is that the planet is at risk due to the foolish actions of men who place profit before the well-being of human beings. We are like a chimp playing with a machine gun.

Japan has a unique culture in that their nationalism and religion are the same. Thus nationalism is their religion and their religion is Japan inc or Japan Shinto or Japan pride. Unlike other countries where if you criticise their policy or country the criticism is taken (negatively or positively and accepted), however to criticise Japan is not only criticizing their country but their own belief but the core of who they are. So this is Japan's own downfall ultimately. Japan can not come to it own senses due to their double vision.

You are right, and this is the problem in dealing with Islam. They can terrorize any country, including super-powers, and no body so far can respond to them effectively.
PS. I give the good comments negative marks, because from reading many comments over a long time on RT, positive marks are given generally for lunatic comments made Islamic terrorists or other religious extremists.

Proud Atheist 11.01.2014 12:14
Fukushima & Islam are the worst two problems the civilized world is facing right now. We know very little about the 1st problem, and we are not bold enough so far to deal effectively with the 2nd problem.
