Divers find missingwoman's body in Chicago River
Police divers found the body ofa missing college student Wednesday afternoon, two and a half daysafter the Minnesota woman vanished beneath the surface of thefrigid Chicago River.
Chicago police said Lauren Li,21, slipped into the icy river while attempting to help her friend,Ken Hoang, 26, who had fallen into the water while trying toretrieve a dropped cell phone shortly after midnight on Monday. He,too, died.
The end to the search for Licame hours after another friend, the lone survivor, was releasedfrom a hospital. Quoc-Viet Phan Hoang, 23, also fell into the rivernear River Esplanade Park, not far from Lake ShoreDrive.
The Cook County medicalexaminer's office said the woman was identified Wednesday afternoonas Lauren Li, after police said earlier that they had identifiedthe body as that of the woman who had disappeared in thewater.
Li, an honors student at theUniversity of Minnesota who aspired to become a doctor, wasvisiting Chicago with her friends while on a semester break fromschool.
Li’s parents, both Chineseimmigrants, hurried to Chicago from their Minneosta home to awaitword on the search effort.
“That’s a relief to me, ifnothing else,” Li’s older brother, Frank, said Wednesday bytelephone after learning a body had been discovered about 1 p.m.near where Li had gone missing.
Police tied a ribbon of yellowcrime scene tape to a railing near where they found thebody.
According to a police reportobtained by the Tribune, Ken Hoang was taking photos from theriverwalk when he dropped his cell phone onto the ice below. Heclimbed over a fence onto the ice but fell into the water. Li thendropped down onto the ice to rescue him but also slipped into theriver. She yelled out for help and Phan Hoang then stepped onto theice and fell into the water, police said.
The Cook County medicalexaminer’s office ruled Tuesday that Hoang drowned and that alcoholcontributed to his death.
Li’s autopsy is scheduled forThursday.
Divers had made repeated effortsto find Li’s body since Monday, even using a small sonar device toprobe the ice-covered river. Search efforts were hampered byfreezing conditions, the ice and zero visibilityunderwater.
University of Minnesotaofficials said Li was a senior in the school’s College ofBiological Science and active in campus Asian-American studentorganizations. Hoang, who was born in Vietnam, was a liberal artsstudent who attended the university until 2010, a campus officialsaid.
“The University of Minnesotaextends our sympathy to the families of Ken Hoang and Lauren Li,both of whom died in a tragic accident in the Chicago River. We arerelieved both families now have closure,” Danita Brown Young, theuniversity’s dean of students said in a statement.
The only survivor, Phan Hoang,was released Wednesday from Presence St. Joseph Hospital,spokeswoman Linda O'Dwyer said.
“I lost two good friends,” PhanHoang said a statement issued Tuesday. “It’s not easy seeing yourfriend drift away and having one die in your arms. I have neverfelt so helpless in my life.”
A group of young people whoidentified themselves as friends and family of the victims brieflyvisited the riverside park Wednesday before divers found Li’sbody.
They held each other, left abouquet of flowers at the scene and stopped to take photos of theicy water.
