这里的 difference 是不可数名词（difference也可以是可数名词）
两种英语的分别是各方面的，不能数。

来谷歌一下：
"What is the difference between British English and American English?"    About 2,450,000 results
"What are the differences between British English and American English?"   About 13,200 results

用 What are the difference... 的明显不多。

British English 和 American English 是两个不同个体，所以不可“共用”一个English，举个例子：
a blue shirt and a red shirt ：两件衬衫，一件是蓝衬衫，另一件是红衬衫

语言很多这种含糊地带，即便是自己的母语，也未必表示比别人更清楚该语言的语法......
我从维基百科抄了一段句子过来：
American English and British English both retain the noun/verb distinction in advice / advise and device / devise ...
如果这段改为 American and British English both retain... 就可以清楚看出语法问题了。
