Jakarta. A third Russian technician working on Indonesia’s Sukhoi fighter jet program in South Sulawesi died on Monday night from what one Indonesian Military officer said could have been vodka poisoning.
Russian Embassy spokesman Vladimir Pronin, however, rejected the suggestion.
“You cannot die from vodka,” Pronin said, adding that there were not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths and that there is “no reason to suspect murder.”
He gave the family names of the deceased as Voronin, Safonov and Poltorak, describing them as in their 40s to 50s.
The men were members of a 12-man warranty team that has been at the Hasanuddin Air Base in Makassar since Sept. 5.
The body of one of the men was reportedly found under his bed at the air base.
Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. I Wayan Midhio told news portal Tempointeraktif. com on Tuesday that vodka appeared to have been a factor in the men’s deaths.
“It’s no problem if they drink a lot of vodka in Russia because it is cold there, but Makassar is hot,” Wayan said.
He said that an official cause of death would be determined after an autopsy.
Vladimir, also, said the embassy was waiting for the results of the autopsy.
He said Indonesia’s Sukhoi program would not be affected by the deaths. |
