It is believed that the manufacturing of notebook computers for those marketswill be shifted to other Dell locations.
Dell, which started operations in Malaysia in 1995, now has 4,500 employees atits manufacturing plants in Bukit Minyak and Cyberjaya.
The downsizing exercise would mainly involve its employees at the Bukit Minyakfacility.
In a telephone interview, Jasmine Begum, Dell Malaysia senior manager forcorporate communications, said the affected employees have been offered competitiveseverance packages and given a week to accept the voluntary separation scheme(VSS) offer.
In March, the company also undertook a VSS exercise which affected 60 employeesin Penang.
The layoffs are part of Dell's efforts to reduce of its global workforce by10%, about 8,800 jobs, as it seeks to pare its costs. Earlier this year thecompany announced that it was aiming to reduce its costs by up to US$3 billionby 2011.
Dell closed a desktop-PC manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas, its home state, with a loss of 800 to 900 jobs in March. In April, it then closed its Limerick,Ireland, facility, shedding 1,900 jobs.
Since the company laid out a goal in 2008 to cut its costs, it has been closingplants and also outsourcing production of some of its products to third-partymanufacturers.
According to Jasmine, the move to offer VSS was in line with Dell's plans tomove up the value chain.
"Dell is looking at enhancing long-term value, simplifying processes andcost efficiency to shorten delivery time for customers. Dell will continue tomanufacture the full line-up of products including notebooks, desktops, serversand storage in Penang for customers in South Asia, Australia and New Zealand .
